Solid game!2512

Lukos from Harrisburg, USA says (23/May/2001):
Like most RPGers have reviewed on these boards, I believe FFIX is the second best game produced from the Final Fantasy line. However, I do not agree that VII is top dog. In FFIX we see a return of more character-unique (or character-specific) skills. FFVII had materia, FFVI (III in US) had the Espers, and FFV had job classes. While those three titles were all great, I believe letting each character possess the SAME skills gets old before too long. Simply having each character possess personal skills draws a player further into the game as they now can associate with and focus on one character (buying the best weapons, armor, etc. Also known as "favoritism").

FFIX's music was terrific! Of course, just about all Final Fantasy games have great music.

Graphically, FFIX towers over FFVII. More work was put into the animation and the characters look a bit smoother.

FFIX's storyline is clean and more straightforward than the ever-twisted FFVII. Too many plot twists spoil the broth, as it were. Also, the ATE was quite an improvement as it allowed the gamer to see what was going on with the other characters (less gaps in the story).

The one aspect in which FFIX fails, however, is difficulty. For a novice RPGer this game may be ideal, but for the die hard RPG fans (If you can remember the name of the witch from Final Fantasy on NES this might be you) it pales in comparison to other games. Whether the characters are too powerful or the enemies aren't up to snuff, it just seems much easier to get through than its predecessors. The one good part about this? Less of the annoying hours spent "leveling up."

FFIX has a fair amount of side quests and challenges as well, making the game worth playing a second time through. For all the advanced players out there who think FFIX is "too easy" or is lacking in side quests -- Try to get the Excalibur II. Then we'll talk.

By the by, the best of the FF series, I believe, was FFII (SNES). For the time of its release and the platform Square had to work with they definitely hit a gold mine.

One of the best RPG games of all time2512

Raymond from USA says (21/May/2001):
FF9 is one of the best games ever made. Who ever said it sucked or did not like it needs to be shot in the leg and forced to play it again. I'm glad they put the real FF touch to this game with weird charaters, airships, not futuristic, and just plain amazing. FF7 and FF8 sucked because of the plots they had, everyone can use magic and summons, too futuristic, and everone was human. I'm come on, its not called Final Fantasy for nothing. Well, I'm glad Squaresoft brought back the Fantasy in Final Fantasy. Because FF7 and 8 could in some way and some possiblity happen, unlike FF9 and the others.

Final Fantasy IX....not as good as I had hoped2467

SJ Cecil from Archdale,NC (USA) says (10/May/2001):
Still, 8 out of 10 is better than 90% of the other games out there!!! IX is very similar to the earlier games in the FF series, the characters are short and dumpy looking. The game is too cut and dry, it doesn't have all the lengthy side quests that define FF. Its superior in graphics to VII and they look sharper and cleaner than the graphics in VIII. Unfortunately, what the game adds visually doesn't offset it's lack of substance. Both VII & VIII had better stories and took longer to complete. Especially VII. All in all FFIX is an excellent game, better than most RPGs out there. It just isn't the best Final Fantasy out there.......

Inferior FF2460

bryan from Malaysia says (9/May/2001):
Don't get me wrong. I like FF9. I mean I didn't get much of anything since playing it. Storyline's OK. Music's fantastic. But the graphics suck big time. No sense of 3D, lack of colour contrast & dull. The ending's quite touching though.
But compared with the likes of FFVII, FFVIII & even Chronocross, FFIX has a long way to go. Guys at Squaresoft better buck up.
I'd say they best RPG in the world would be FFVII, FFVIII, Chronocross, FFVX &......
Maybe it's they attention they put on FFX too much till they compromised on the FFIX. Who knows.

2378

Jay-D. from Orlando, FL, USA says (19/Apr/2001):
Hello to everyone that enjoys RPGs! I will say for one that I have been a fan of the RPG world since I was a little girl, about 4 years old. Many people are shocked I'm a female, but I am. The video game Final Fantasy caught my attention since then & I am almost 17 years old on this day. I still love Final Fantasy & other Squaresoft RPG games. I have played Final Fantasy IX & beated it already. I have to say it is one of the best games out there at this moment. The plot is stunning & well understanding. The gameplay is awesome. Great job in everything in my opinion. The musicial cues are amazing. I was very impressed that every song that I heard on that game, I loved it. The characters are so smart & great. They look odd, but so unique. That's the thing about FFIX, it is all unique. The battle system is just like the one from FFVI, (FFIII in United States), & I prefer it that way. The animation makes FFVII second best because this time you can actually see the characters' faces the best way instead of them looking at blocked people. I also love how to get a Chocobo & the Mog Mail. I hope they make E-mail on part X. (LOL) I have played almost every Final Fantasy game & yes all of them are wonderful, but FFIX has made an improvement to the RPG industry. I cannot wait to see the Final Fantasy movie & to play the new Final Fantasy game. I am very exicted for all of these great news. I hope Squaresoft continues these Final Fantasy RPGs because no matter how old I get, I will keep on playing them! Final Fantasy IX itself is good enough for the winter that just recently passed. Final Fantasy made my imagination come to life because the game is just so real. It makes you addictive & open minded that you too have to care about the world & people. Like Zidane Tribal says, "You don't need a reason to help people" & I agree.

Peace & keep the fantasy alive!
Jay-D.

FF9 the best is here2319

A gamer from Grayslake Illinois USA says (9/Apr/2001):
FF9 is the best one yet. ITs intence videos Made 7 look like a supernintendo game. The 8 new characters were the coolest i have ever seen. A brilliant story line with a marvelous end. Squaresoft makes another great Final fantasy. Each person with awesome abilites makes up for the loss of the original 8 members of AVALANCHE.

Jonny from Glasgow says (6/Mar/2001):

9 is good but not king in the FF series2291

Swirly-Chicken from Stockholm,Sweden says (6/Mar/2001):
As far as the Final Fantasy series come, I think that there was some things missing in nr. 9.
1: The item list in both 7 and 8 were much more extensive.
2: Magic for all of the characters.
3: Summoning magic for all of the characters, but in a way that didnīt make the game worse, but i think that I just missed it.
4: it was way to easy to get to the end.
5: The monsters was, ah man, they where just to easy to beat.
that goes dubble for the bosses...
6: Somehow I think the hole world was to small, I think there where more to do in the other games somehow, it just felt smaller.

The CGI was fab. I just loved they way they animated the characters in them, and lets not forget the music. Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, he did a grate job on them.
FF9 is over all a grate game, so if you havnīt played it yet hurry up and buy it...
I would like to buy the CD.s but $49 is to much i think..
Final Fantasy IX was verry good, even with the bad stuff, I canīt wait for FFX, I have to have it..

It was fantastic, but ff7 is the best so far.2272

~Cassanova~ from Edmonton,ALberta,Canada says (5/Mar/2001):
I really enjoyed ff9. It had very good graphics and a really neat story line. It was a bit corny some times but believe it or not, i found my self laughing at some of the retarded jokes. This game was worth my money but i always find myself re-playing ff7 just because it is the best game psx has ever made, graphics or no graphics.

Wasnt the best in the series but was awesome anyways.2238

Scorpius from Logansport, IN says (1/Mar/2001):
FF7, I think, will always be the best FF game in the way of a story-line but 9 was the the best graphically. my only problem with 9 was that i noticed a lot of frame skipping and for some odd reason the cinematics kept crashing my PSX. i think that square may have pushed the PSX as far as it will ever be able to manage.

A Great Comeback from the Monotonous FF82232

Scott B. from Louisiana, USA says (28/Feb/2001):
Even though it is hard to believe, I rate FF9 right next to the amaizing FF7. I think it towered over FF8's horribly-defined characters and boring plot. There was not one time that I lost interest in the story or battles. The graphics were excellent, though maybe too many FMVs which took up alot of space on the disks. One good thing is that the story was made very clear so any idiot could understand the complex plot with the help of the new ATE system. The side quests were better than any FF that I have played (especially Chocobo Hot & Cold). If there was a downfall to this game, it would be the lower difficulty level and the fact that it doesn't take that long to beat.
But, in the end, FF9 left me with an overall feeling the same as FF7: Depression...... It was surprisingly depressing, to me, to accept the fact that the game was FINISHED and the adventures of my favorite video game characters came to a hault......Great Game!!

Final Fantasy IX is the second best, ever!2181

Muscleman 420 from Pennsylvania USA says (23/Feb/2001):
Final Fantasy IX is definatly the second best game I have ever played on Playstation!!! It has great graphics and it has great music. It always seemed to be pulling me further and further into the storyline. It has tons of items and weapons, but it doesn't tell you how to get the best ones. Another great thing about it is that it isn't one of those games where you just beat it once then put it away in a shelf or something and forget about it. It isn't very original but I don't really care about that. It is an awesome game, YOU HAVE TO GET!!
Incase you were wondering, the best game for Playstation is definitely Final Fantasy VII!

9 was really great, but 7 is still the best!2172

A gamer from Pennsylvania USA says (22/Feb/2001):
Final Fantasy IX was one of the best games I have ever played. It seemed as though I was drawn into the whole story. There wasn't even one spot where I was bored. Even the music was pretty good, unlike VIII. The graphics were pretty good too. It had a great story line, and really kept moving. The best part is that there are so many items and sidde quests that even after you beat it you want to go back and get all the items that you missed earlier in the game. There are only a few minor set-backs. One is that it doesn't give you enough info on where and how to get some of the better weapons. It has to be one of the greatest games I have ever played. Although Final Fantasy VII is still the best game there is.

Nine was fine, Eight was great, but Seven was heaven2154

Trunks_17 from Ringwood (NJ), USA says (21/Feb/2001):
I didn't think that this game would be as good as FFVII. If I did, then I'd be expecting way too much, and then the game would suck. But I didn't. By the way, eight wasn't great at all. It just rhymed!! Anyway, sure, the graphics were great, sure, the storyline was incredible as with seven, but the real thing that stood out was the fighting system. Not any old character can summon, or steal, or use magics. Not every character can just attack away and make you happy. For once, I actually LIKED getting into random battles (sometimes!!), and leveling up became routine. Better than 8 but nothing compared to the storyline and characters of 7.

Pure Gaming Genius2155

Fred from London, England says (21/Feb/2001):
FFIX is a brilliant game with an excellent storyline. Thankfully it has gone back to the FFVII gameplay type. The addition of characters with tails and regents who are nasty bugs and people who are hippos is intresting but good. But there are still no voices. I think this is the best FF to grace the playstation and i am immensely looking forward to FFX on the PS2. A must buy!

Great Game2156

Ryan from USA says (21/Feb/2001):
Final Fantasy 9, I think is an awesome game. The only thing wrong with it is it lacked the graphics of FF8 and I didn't feel so involved with the game. I recommend buying it ( along with the other FF).

Kudos To Square2127

House Rahl from Canada says (19/Feb/2001):
Amazing Graphics and stirring music are staples in this series, and FFIX continues the legacy of Square's flagship games.
I loved the story, and the depth of character so prominent in FFIX, and if ratings were measured in thumbs, I wouldn't have enough of them to salute Square. Great game, great series!

Just What The Doctor Ordered!2128

Cardiff City FC from Cardiff, Wales says (19/Feb/2001):
Well... having played the first part of this game it is pretty clear to me that it is VERY similar to the previous 2 final fantasy games... SO GREAT!! Having seen a couple of negetive reviews on this page all ready i had second thoughts on wether to purchase the game... but having bought the previous 2 games before it... i had the belief in the company and the franchise in that in no circumstances would they publish a game worse than their previous ones... and im glad to report that my gut feeling was right! The game is typical final fantasy... sucking you into 'their' weird but compelling world, something that diciples of the series will know all too well about. Graphically squaresoft have drawn aces once again with some spectacular battle sequences... and CGI that is at least on a par with anything in Hollywood. But hey.... we all knew that this game was going to be graphically impressive didnt we?.... In terms of gameplay this game resembles final fantasy 7 more than 8 with more emphasise on the realms of 'fantasy'. To be honest, FF8, albeit a great game, didnt do its name justice, it tried to be too 'real' and as a consequence was a little boring. Yes, the random battles can be infruriating but you gonna have to learn to love it, or, at least pull up with it to enjoy this game.. this game will last you a very long time if you make the most out of it... we are looking at least 40+ hours... now thats value for money. Looking down at early reviews on this game on this page.. i can see that you will either love it to bits.. or hate it!! One thing i can say is that if you do own the other 2 games, and loved them... you are SURE to find this game great as well, Final Fantasy is back whether you like it or not!

Finally Final Fantasy has come back....2113

Jim from Phila., PA says (16/Feb/2001):
Call me an "old head", call me a "purist", but I think this FF is much better then 7 & 8. The whole point behind the FF series was fun, crazy, out-of-this world characters. I like how Squaresoft went back to the "old fashioned" mage character. The true-to-life characters of 8 were a total turn off for me. That's what I play Tomb Raider and Resident Evil for. I like my RPGs to have strange, cartoon-looking charaters. FF9 has brought me back! Thank you Squaresoft!!!
