Pretty good but it has flaws. | | Jean from Arlington says (22/Jul/2003): | I'm on disk 2 and so far consider this to be a pretty good game. I really like the more medieval settings and less tortured ability system (as compared to VIII). Nice graphics, very nice movies and music. But it doesn't feel like I have much control over the game, which makes mini-game particulary important. Unfortunately it appears that there is a flaw in my game disk. My card game does not adhere to the rules that are outlined in the game guide or the internet sites. For example, when I successfully flip a card, the card to which that one points do NOT usually flip too. So the execution of combos is not possible. I haven't heard anyone else mention this problem, though I know there were a lot of complaints about the card game's random nature. I would really like to be able to play the card game but even so I've been glued to my Playstation since I go FFIX.
| What I Think About Final Fintasy 9 | | Dave from Bronx, New York says (23/Jul/2003): | I think Final Fantasy IX was the best one out of the whole series. The storyline is great. I would want to keep going to find out what's going to happen next. You can also become attached to the characters, my favorite character is Vivi. The movie graphics are colorful and great. I completed the game twice and am going to play it again for some secrets and hidden items. The music was good I found myself humming to the music as I was playing. The ATB gauge was real helpful at the time, unlike Final Fantasy X; the enemies will keep attacking instead of just standing there until there turn. I loved the whole middle aged aspect and the use of steam and mist subject. I liked how you can control the airship and how you’re free to wander about in the world map, instead of going straight ahead like FFX. I like how each character had there on problem or dilemma. My favorite character problem is Vivi's. The trance is good also, you were able to get way more moves in trance mode in FFIX than in over drive mode in FFX. The only thing I didn’t like was that if your trance gauge reaches max you cant choose whether to use it or not, which means you cant save a trance for a another battle. I love FFIX as i said before it was my favorite out of the whole series. I wish they could make a FFIX for future consoles. That would be cool.
| Fianal Fantasy IX is the best yet!!!!! | | DarkRose from Fresno,CA says (3/Aug/2003): | I love this game! The character's profiles and stuff are so cool. I'd have to say that Kuja does look kinda like a girl and the mini-games drive me insane, but the captivating storyline completely makes up for that! I have had huge fights with Final Fantasy X fans, but I'll still stick with IX to the end! Oh and for all you fans, Dagger's real name is Sarah.
| The Twist | | Sephiroth from Cali says (13/Aug/2003): | Ok... Final Fantasy 9 was a great game! It was not as good as FFVII, FFVIII, or FFX in my opinion. One aspect of the game that I truly hated was that all the characters looked like midgets! If the people in the game actually looked like people, this game would have been even greater!!! But please, dont let the midgety-look stop you from playing the game. It's a great game... good enough to be known as a Final Fantasy game.
| Blast You, Disbelievers! | | Siyengo from Parkes, Australia says (16/Aug/2003): | Ha! It's back!
Reading these reviews, I was simply amazed at how many of them were pre-occupied with slamming Squaresoft's masterpiece. Honestly, people, where are your SOULS?
After the brilliant Seven and the uninspiring Eight (I won't mention Ten) I was sceptical about this. But why can't you see that this is a work of art?
Of course, I have to mention the graphics. They're beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, one of the best so far, if slightly inferior to Ten. The characters are so well animated, and the FMVs are incredible.
I don't know what you think, but I like the cute characters. Admittedly, Square could have done better on detailing a few's backgrounds, but as for me, I enjoy the here and now of gameplay, and the details of past lives are not the clincher.
As a 13-year-old, I get bored easily, but, regaredless of what others are saying, the gameplay and plot are absorbing. Even the battles I enjoyed, although the bosses were quite easy.
All I can say is that, if you are a fan of fantasy RPGs, at least give this game a test run.
| The best game!!!!!! | | Michael Maynard from Millbrook AL. USA says (30/Aug/2003): | This is a complicated game but overall its the greatest game ever.If you think this game is gay then you are no fun. This is the greatest adventure game ever made.I have beat this game hundreds of times,it is a great game. This is by far a very good game and is worth your money.
| Come On Now A Monkey Boy With Knives? (FF8 IS BEST) | | Dark Squall from Tucson ,Az USA all the way says (12/Nov/2004): | Ok Ok OK sure it was kind of allrighat but it wasn't even origional
(sorry im a horrible speller) a guy comes to kidnap a prinsses and falls in love with her? What kind of plot is that? And the charecters... WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY?????
1.main charecter(Zindane):monkey boy
2.Blk mage(vivi): To me looks like a bowling ball with a hat, jaket and eyes
3.heroic rival(Fraya): Rat/chicken woman
4.Fatass that eats frogs:(Quenma):I have no idea at all
5.Lonly girl(Eiko):a cat with a horn
The only people that even look like people are stiener garnet and armnant
The wepons arent even cool
a fork daggers rods and swords and spear (swords&spear are fine) but come on now an effin fork?
in FF8 you get a cool gunblade numchukus a whip gloves a gun and a thing that shoots off rinoa's arm
speaking of wepons armnants wepons arent even origonalbot tifa and zell use their fists
The summonings too atleast you can have more that 2 people that summon and 3 that use magic

Ok to spend some time i'll give you some ideas on really good games
1.Final Fantasy 8
2.Legend of Dragoon(LOD)
3.Final Fantasy 7
4.Suikoden
5.Mortal Kombat Trilogy
6.Legend of Legia
| this is one of the best games i ever played | | joey from loudon,tn,usa says (25/Nov/2004): | i realy liked this game. my favourite character is vivi he cast some pretty sweet spells.the graphics were in between and i'd give this game a replay value a 9 out of 10. my favourite summon is phoenix he looks really cool.the music on this game is really good.i bet it took awile to make a game as great as this.my favourite spell is flare if you cast it on your self with reflectx2 and auto reflect on.it will reflect on your enemies and do a total of 9999 damage this is how i beat hades.the music with kuja is cool.ff9 would stomp any other final fantasy games ass. ill tell you where the ultima weapon is found first you need a dark blue chocobo go to the exact place where shimmering island was then use a dead pepper and choco should dive down and find a chest containing zidane's ultima weapon thi weapons attack power is 100 and takes a ton of hp .you canget a gold chocobo by gettin 6 chocograph pieces id like to know one thing how the heck do you get another pumice piece it can summon ark that would really help me out. i also dont know the jar combination at ipsens castle thats the thing ive been trying to figure out for weeks.some of the battles are extremely hard but some are easy.i love this game and its cool.the end
| Best game evur!!!!!!!!! | | Schmitty from USA says (4/Feb/2005): | Dear fer from maywood,
How did you not like FFIX? its the best god damn game ever. u must be some kind of dumb ass for not liking this game. plus, ffiii suked ass, just like u. whoever is reading this must hate fer for not liking ffix. feel free to write yourselves. i recomend this game. it takes a long time to beat the game, but that means theres more stuff in it to be good. the graphics rock for a ps1 game too. this game is not a waste of time. youll really get into the story too. u can even alter the story your self by chosing different variations of active time events. its really cool:) ive almost completed the game myself, so if any1 needs help with the game feel free to ask. i actually need help too. i cant beat necron. any1 have any suggestions? right now i just beat hades and need 2 pumice peices to make the item. i couldnt think of any other way to beat this guy because i cant leave memoria. i even have a trance at him, well, not any more... ill have to get another 1 b4 fighting him, but please giv me ideas on how to beat this insanely hard boss. plus, is there any way to prevent grand cross? that sux ass. its also the only reason i cant beat him. ive been trying to get lucky with it but nothing has worked yet. ive also gotten different hp ranges, if any1 knows the real 1 please tell me. im hoping its the one i read that was 54100. well, just tell me if u need help or if u can help me.
P.S. fer sux ass
| Awesome | | spike08 from Downers Grove says (3/Apr/2005): | The plot got sorta changend a lot near disc three. I played this game and got hooked. Then i couldn't beat one of the final bosses cause my characters levels sucked. Then after another year i didn't want to pick up where i lost so i started another file. took me 50 more hours added on to my earlier 30 but let me tell you.. it was worth it. Loved the characters and The plot was pretty cool and i liked the side quests too. On my second time around i found the last bosses really easy. I mean when i got to the last boss i just used Zidane and stiener with everyone else dead. Zidane was at 61 and steiner was lower. The did 9999 damage all the way, and when i beat it i was like... Thats it? Man sin in FFX was a lotter harder to kill. Maybe it was because i took a few hours of side quests to get zidane's ultimate weapon. This game is only the second ff i played and it could Tie with my thoughts on FFX. This game rocks i'd play it over for another 50 hrs again if someone asked me to. I liked the ending as well all is good in it really intersting, cool and one of the best and longest endings for a video game i've seen
| This game could have done better | | Andrew Benavides from Annandale, Virginia says (17/May/2005): | Uhhhhh............. yeah........ this game really coulda done better. The graphics were alright, the sound was average, I kinda liked the medieval style, but I just thought some things couldve done better. It took me two years to beat, but its out of my own fault, I got stuck in Pandemonium, then I finally get all the way to the end. The battle/boss music was not too good, and the availablity of most weapons/items was really limited. They made one mistake, they put in a character called Quina. Most worthless character ever! All it (because nobody knows if its a he/she) does is cook and eat for good commands. I spent 20 dollars on this game, which was the first FF game I ever bought/owned! Im really glad I didnt play it first; I started with the all time favorite that I watched my cousin play alot: Final Fantasy 8. That game rocks, but I'm here to talk about this game. It has a way too long ending, and it takes a long time to play. The battles I liked were the Final Battles, that's it. I would not really recommend this game to anyone, unless you want to play it for yourself and see if I'm wrong. Please feel free to email me with any questions on this game, OR any other Final Fantasy game, ranging from 7-10. This is my opinion, and your opinion is your opinion. God bless, this game kinda sucked.
| this game is really cool | | jagger mullins from fenton micigan says (30/Jun/2005): | man i really love this game. im still playing it but from wat ive seen from the first 2 disks ill love the rest of the game .and the guy who said this games suxs then all i got to say say is shut up and stop playing if you dont like the dam game this game is the best i have ever played and the reason it took so long for you to finish te game is because you suk ass .so back to the game. the caricters are really cool my favirite is ziden.i really need help on a part its complacated the part where your in that manisoin and your eikio walking areonud trying to find somthing i forgot wat but anyway this game rocks. the grapics are really good for playstaotion 1 atleast.its is very complacated at times. the game is the best out of the series and to me is a must get for real fans. if your looking for a game thats fun and a bit complacated then this game is for you. man this game is really good its taken me 50 hours and im still not done with the game but thats because my platstation screwd up . but even tho it is taking so long its one of the best game ive played no matter wat. the value of wat the game is selling for is way under rated it should at leaast cost a bit more. people would say that the lower the better in which i agree but how much its selling for is just stupid. well thats all i have to say other than if you need help email me ill help you. bye.
| Top 3 RPG Ever. Period. | | Alyson from Norfolk usa says (8/Jul/2005): | In my opinion, the top three RPGs are FF9, FF10, and Zelda;Ocarina of Time. But since we're talking about FF9, I'll focus on that. I realize I might be biased since this was the second RPG I ever played, but I don't care. The gameplay was awesome, the characters were easy to identify with, and (unlike other people) I didn't have any trouble with understanding the plot. Plus the surroundings are so detailed and (dare I say it?) pretty! And when this game first came out, it had the best cutscene graphics out there. Personally, I still think it does. And don't forget the side missions and minigames. I got my chocobo up to the golden level, and then you can go to chocobo's cloud or something. I had to have my big brother help me out when we got to Pandemonium. Yeah that was kindof tough. But I just went back and trained a bit and raised my Chocobo's level. I don't remember everything about the storyline because I was like 9 when I beat it. Don't let that sway you though! I was very skilled at a young age! lol So if you were trying to decide on a game to buy that will have you completely, FF9 is your best bet.
| Awesome! | | Veronica from Michigan, USA says (12/Jul/2005): | This was my first FF game I ever played, so I don't have too much to compare it too. But I do like the graphics and the music(although, listening to the same battle song for 3 hours can give you a headache hehe). I loved each of the characters and how each of them had their own personalities and their own feelings. I really got into each of the character's emotions. I haven't beaten it quite yet because I got down to the third to last boss and couldn't win because my characters were only about level 50 (one was only about level 40!) =P. But I'm trying to pick up on alot more of the side quests and abilities and stuff because I didn't really have them the last time and I think that they're fun and are helping me through the game easier. I think that it's a shame how some of you think that this game is bad. I think that you should be more open to the characters' emotions and struggles, that makes the game really enjoyable for me. I'm on disk 3 in my next attempt to get through the game. E-mail me with any helpful tips!
| Ups and Downs | | Arken Nekra says (15/Aug/2005): | The game was okay... and if you've only played 2 FFs, 10, and 9, you really need to play ff7, or 6... They will blow them out of the water... and FF8 and X-2, are the worst in my opinion, sorry... But anyway on to the main point which is to discuss FF9. I beat the game, i found it rather easy, i always try to beat the game at the lowest level possible, because that way you really feel a challenge, and acheivement when winning... I always at least go 20 or more levels lower than any walkthrough would suggest... In FF6 I beat Shinryu at lower than level 40... and they suggest a minimum of level 80. And similarly in 9, i try to do those kind of things, verse the supposed tougher fights such as against hades... I unfortunately never got the most powerful summmon in that game, i got close, but i never knew how to fight the hardest creature inthe game, because i didn't know how to get to him... you know to get the other piece i need to synthisize to form the most powerful summon, Ark, i believe. Furthermore aside from my liking of hard battles, which FF9, how a few of, such has hades, and this other guy... I liked the graphics at the time, also the cinema with Alexander saving the place against bahamut was awesome... But i coudln't really connect with the characters as much as i'd like to, and the story line, tried to be deep, but it to me was kind of shallow... i mean it really just messed with people who are all disturbed emotionally, and lacked to me certain depths... It just didn't compare in my mind to earlier games such as FF7... They lost something in that all.. And the fighting style I liked better in other FFs, and they really didn't develop the final boss as much as i liked in FF9... For example when they developed sephiroth, they gave you not only a reason to dislike him, they developed the rivalry that Cloud had with him, the games they play with eachothers minds, more so Sephiroth's with Cloud's mind... How sephirorth was trying to use Cloud, and Cloud overcoming it in triumph... And the group leader in FF7, Cloud verse FF9, Zidane, and i make this comparison so you can see my disliking of FF9, is that Zidane wasn't as confident as Cloud was, as sure of himself, as a leader... Cloud lost it at one time, but for the most part, he was the uncontested leader, and he had a plan, and executed with confidence he would succeed and would be able to overcome the adversity facing them. And this allowed you to connect with his goal, his purpose, and to realize in real life, a leader would have to have similar qualities so that people would feel confident following him, and that's how it was in that game.. But to me FF9, and 8 that wasn't the case which is why it lacked overall... i mean it lacked the notion of the two titans clashing one another one on the good one on the bad... And it lacked the idea of David and Goliath mentality, FF9 was somewhere in between, and it didn't give me that feel of dire need with the chance, and confidence of victory that the other FF games did. Overall i give it a 6/10, for graphics, certain humor, certain situational character irony, and development, and for the standard FF qualities that we've all grown attached to, for those who like the FF series, and played them probably know what i'm talking about.
Anyway, Hopefully, now Sqaure Enix, keeps it up, and doesn't make another X-2, and really gets back on doing their classic, well developed, unique characters and plot style games.
| Can you smell that FF goodness cookin? | | A gamer from Place, TX says (25/Jan/2006): | This was definitely the best Final Fantasy game ever made. I've played FFVI FFVII FFVIII and FFX, and they were UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME at best. However, this one was kind of around Superbly Awesome "if superbely is a word" and perfect game. However, perfect game goes to Legend of Legaia, so this gets 2nd Place. The graphics are amazing for a PS1 game, even for the early PS2 games the graphics were great. The music was top-knotch, especially after I had to go through the gritty mess that FFVII had to offer "nenenenene...nenenene...that's what FFVII sounds like". The storyline gets pretty intense later on. The only problem I had with the game was Kuja. This guy was not a guy. I'm telling you, the first time I saw it...I almost blew up in shock when I found out Kuja was of the male gender. What a weirdo! What was Squaresoft thinking?!?! Anyways, if you like FF get this game. It's brimming with great graphics and an amazing thing called "humor" which is lacking in the other games of the series. Ah yes...humor. Something I missed entirely in the days of yore when I used to play Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot.
| my review covers the goods and bads of the game | | Josh Brandy from hickory, N.C, United States says (8/Jun/2006): | My first Final Fantasy game that I played was FF9, and I grew to love the series, as my favorite games ever. I started with 9, then played 7, then tactics, followed by 10, the 8, 5, and 6, then 4, which i just got recently. Anyway, back on topic.
PLUSSES OF THE GAME:
FF9 is the second best final fantasy after 7, and a great return to the Old School FF style. This game was absolutely incredible.
GRAPHICS-9/10-great backround graphics, preety good human graphics
STORY-9/10-very deep, memorable story, great work of art
CHARACTERS-9/10-the characters built up from start to finish
GAMEPLAY-8/10-good except for ability system
BATTLE SYSTEM-9/10-superb
MUSIC-10/10-enough said, just listen
NEGATIVES OF THE GAME:
There were only three negative things about this game
1) girly boss- kuja.....is female, in my opinion
2) dry map- not enough towns
3) ability system(thats why i gave the gameplay 8 of 10)
As a review in one sentence: Final Fantasy 9 is gourgeous game with lush environments and a great story, play it, its worth it
buh bye
P.s, i may do reviews for all the other Final fantasies, previously and still to come so hang in there
peace out and keep playin fianl fantasy
| An Answer For Old School FF Veterans In Some Ways | | Tiger Young from Memphis, TN. United States says (21/Jun/2006): | Not the best FF game, but is definitely one of the better ones. If u like cartoony-looking characters, simple ability learning system, and medieval-looking settings or fairy tales like places, then this is the game for you. Castles, airships, knights, princess, black mages, summoner..etc..are back. The battle system is mostly similar to the last three FF titles with the exception that the characters all fall into certain classes, which mean that they all have unique abilities that only they can do(just like classic FF games as well, before FF6)...(Pretty much a mixture of old scool FF titles and recently released FF titles). I think the characters are loveable and when together they seem to provide a sort of humorous mood to the game.
If u like the battle system of other FF games, this one will do just fine. (I think its ridiculous to hate the battle system of one FF game and like the battle system of another FF game mainly because all of them derived from each other with a few differences here and there.)
Graphically, I think it's only second to FFX.
Plotwise, it is pretty standard of a Final Fantasy game(which typically have loopholes and untied ends here and there).
The characterizations are okay. The Zidane and Dagger thing seems pretentious and not original to me. Zidane and Dagger love situation, like Rinoa and Squall, is an imitation of Celes and Locke in FF6.
Also,A few things I don't like about the game are
(1)It's too easy.. (They should make it harder like FFIV.)
(2) the main character and main villain look kinda girlish...I guess GAY would be the best word.Zidane does not hold up characters like Cecil or Terra and Kuja just does not hold up to Kefka or Sephiroth. The only thing I like about Kuja is the fact that he's more of a tragic hero than a villian, sort of like Sephiroth...but his costume reminds me of Christina Aguerrilla..yeezzz.[I think square-Enix is aiming toward female audiences and young adolescences...Kinda notice that lately],
3)The game seems a bit too short. (It took me less than 12 Hours to get to Kuja.About 20 hours to get all weapons, abilities, and max level.. what the hell...Completing disc one of FFVII took me a little bit more than 20 hours.)
Overall, a GOOD game if you prefer graphics as much as gameplay. But if you prefer gameplay and don't give a damn about graphics like I do , I recommend FFIV, FFVI(this game is just awesome!!!), and FFVII...All of which have so-so graphics.
If u have been playing FF games up to this point, then chances are u already know that all FF titles are good. So play them all and find out which one is YOUR FAVORITE. You'll be surprise how much you going to end up liking or hating a game once you give it a chance.Damn...I feel like I'm preaching...sorry.
| this game is the best!!!!!!!!!!!! | | Jarred from Cold Lake Alberta Canada says (15/Jul/2006): | um... This is probally one of the best final fantasy games ever made the graphics were awsome for ps1 and it took a long time to beat the game so if any 1 says that it is too long i highly disagree with them i loved the storey line and liked how the bosses were so challenging like Ozma the toughest S.O.B ever in ff9 and same with necron the party that i used to beat necron was zidane, vivi , stiener, and aramant i had them equiped with their last weapons exept for stiener he was equiped with the Ragnarok and basically whooped his ass with shock (stiener) and flare (vivi) and just attacked with zidane and aramant and when needed i used aramants flair special revive and revived my fallen guys and basically just anihalated necron. But ya back to the game:) i loved doing the side quests because wut betta way to get stronger weapons for your party i loved all the secrets in the game and the ending it was the best i have ever seen the. some bosses where rilly challenging and who ever dissagree's with me can go lick them selves umm i played this game 4 times just so i can beet the game with every thing but i was unseccessful and i am currently playin it again. so if anyone has any problems just email me and i will gladly help u out. other than that THIS GAME ROX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

abilities: Auto- regen, auto-potion, hp+20%, loud mouth, anti body, clear headed, insominiac, counter, bright eyes, and return magic.
Flare: Chakra, spare change, curse, Revive, and demi shock.
