Best Wrestling Game On Any Console! | | Mick Foley from England,London says (8/Dec/2000): | Smackdown 2 is the best wrestler on any console at the moment! The amount of matches is amazing, my favourites are the Hell in the Cell and TLC. Although they could have put in a Inferno Match or even a Bra and Panty match! The only bad point is that the season mode kinda drags towards the end, but is still enjoyable! (They could of added the storyline of Commish Foley)
Overall a very enjoyable game!
| Simply the Best/ Fastest ever selling game in the history of gaming!!! | | Dusan Manojlovic from Corby, UK says (17/Dec/2000): | This has got to be one of the best sports or beat em ups (which ever category you put it in.) Everybody thought it would be tough to produce an even better game to it's predeccor but WOW didn't THQ pull it off! I mean the graphics were slightly improved on the arenas, loads of backstage areas, even more superstars, amazing new modes and litt'e details such as the announce tables or the steps at ringside. You will not get bored of this game, till the next one comes out, simply because there is so much to do - hardcore matches themselves have about 8 different game modes and the season will not bore you a bit. The fun side is in it as well as in such games as in Attitude it was all about realism and it didn't succeed in that even if it did in other areas. The entrances were improved altough they could be better, the sound was dissapointing, the music was annoying and play-by-play commentating would be alot more better. I can't wait till the game on the PS2 which is due in late spring.
| The Best Yet... | | Paul Dunkley from Leicester, England says (17/Dec/2000): | This is undoubtedly the best wrestling game ever, but that does not mean it is without it's faults. The game has the best graphics a PSX wrestling game can deliver, as well as detailed intros, taunts and celebrations. The choice of matches is extensive, and contrary to what some people say, the ladder match mode is very entertaining. The CAW option is the most detailed and engrossing to date, even better that that of WWF Attitude, but the major (and possibly only) fault lies in the season mode. This is enjoyable but slow, as you have to sit through the annoying simulation of each match, which just gets boring after the first time. Many people say that their CAW's aren't put on cards, but that is probably because they are not entering themselves into any title races, or are automatically entering themselves in the World Title race, you must start from the bottom, i.e. Hardcore Title, then you will be on virtually every card and work your way to the top. Try it, it works.
Overall, a damn good game which every PSX owner should purchase.
| It doesn't matter if it is the best wrestling game ever! | | PsiCrazy from Atlanta, Georgia...USA says (20/Dec/2000): | Ok...you're right, it is the best wrestling game ever created, but that doesn't make it good. Just because the last twenty or so wrestling games were pitiful doesn't mean we should settle for this. The game itself is much better than the original Smackdown as far as characters, features, matches, backstage areas and so on. The load time is awful. If you want to play a season, it will take you just longer than the real thing. Unlike the original Smackdown where you could just skip right to the matches your character was participating in, you must now sit through a dramatization of each match on your way. You don't have to watch the match, but you have to watch the meters tick away on each one. In between each of these, you have loading time. Though I am highly impressed with the vast improvements from the original game, the coders need to get back to work.
| The Best? Of course it is. Room for improvement? Definitely. | | A gamer from Valparaiso, IN USA says (22/Dec/2000): | By far.. the best wrestling game ever, it will not, can not and shall not be topped by any other attempts at a wrestling game this year. There are tons of match options, cage, ladder,i quit, casket, hell in a cell, table, hardcore, anywhere fall, table/ladders/chair match, time limit title and more. There are tag team moves including the 3d, whassssup head to groin, spike pile driver and lots more. It has the best caw ever, you can create just about any... i mean any wrestler imaginable either your own creation or wrestlers in other leagues. It has room for improvement however, load times suck in season mode you cant just skip to the next match you have to wait through a lame simulation of each match you choose to pass over. No commentary from J.R. or the king.. no commentary at all which sux. Entrances arent that great, I like to see the wrestlers walk to the ring and do there trademark entrances they do. Instead you get to see them in front of there entrance videos with music which dont even play all the way through. However, the way that they have it you get more options to your entrances so its a give and take thing. Over all it is an awesome game and for those who have played it... can agree with me and give me a HELL YEAH!!
| It's the best wrestling game for | | Priest from Tallahassee,Florida USA says (23/Dec/2000): | Yes this is the best wrestling game I have seen on the PSX but the controls are way too sloppy to be that much fun. The graphics are slightly better over last year and the added play modes are a definite plus. But when you consider that the characters don't really react to the falls that they take(ex.Falling through the hell in a cell and getting up 5 seconds later etc...)and that again the controls and animations are way to fast. You have a game that plays really sloppy with outstanding play modes.
I say if you have an Nintendo 64 just go with wwf no mercy.
It has most of the matches that Smackdown 2 has with way better control.
P.S. The intros for the wrestlers still stink. Same as last year. :(
| Undoutbly the best wrestling game EVER! | | The Extremist from Liverpool, England says (29/Dec/2000): | This is the best wrestler ever. SD1 was perfect at the time and now THQ have improved on perfection. the special matches are brilliant and then they make it possible to win a TLC match after competing in a season and a Tornado Tag Table match. Hell In A Cell is great especially as you can Last Ride your opponent through the pannel in the centre of the cells roof!
The game is like a drug. I rented it out played it for 2 days none stop and became addicted to it.
You can play for hours on end in the season mode which is a lot better than SD1's poor season mode. With cut scenes, on going rivalries.
One of the best parts I think is when you are in a tag match and you whip your opponent into the dudleys corner and pull off the infamous 3D dudley death drop! or the WAZZAAAAAAAAAAAP!
now there are ove 50 wrestlers to choose from and the create a superstar mode has been vastly improved. The create a stable mode is great too and create a manager is good. the graphics are great and Edge and Christian are the only wrestlers on the game who dont look like thier real life counter parts.
there are now way more backstage areas and when you are outside you can make your opponent get hit by a limo or a chevy! you can put your opponent through the commentators table and whip them into the steel ring steps.
Overall this game is the best wrstling game ever E-V-E-R If you Smellllllllalalalaow what the Extremist.............is cookin'
| Not As Good As I Thought! | | A gamer from Cheshire, England says (3/Jan/2001): | When I heard about what matches were in Smackdown 2 I was very excited about getting it. But when I put it in and started to play I realised what a let down it was. The Season mode takes way to much time to load, when you skip a match you have to go through a silly sequence to get the winner, stupid cut-scenes which dont need to be in the game like when someone is sitting shaking there head or it saying that someone has arrived. In a tag table match you only have to put one of your opponents through a table, you cant do double team moves through the table and you wouldnt get on top of the table to powerbomb someone through it you would go to the side. The Hell In The Cell isnt big enough and it shouldnt be so easy to get out, you should have one exit which would be the cell door. You should be able to throw someone off the top of the cell and they go through the announce table. In any match you should be able to get a table from under the ring. You cant do double team moves in any match besides Tag Match (not even tornado tag). The Ladder Match is to easy to win. When you put someone through a table in any match you should at least be able to get the three count or it should knock them out. In anywhere fall matches you should be able to throw your opponent off the stage. The Following matches should be put on the next WWF game (possibly PS2):
Buried Alive Match
Inferno Match
Lions Den Match (Definitely PS2)
| It's an improvement, but it could be better. | | nick franco from Hinesville, GA, USA says (4/Jan/2001): | Smack Down! 2 is a good game to play, but I wouldn't buy it.
The graphics are a little to jagged and broken looking for me. And while the sound quality is ok, the match music is sub par, and there's absoloutly no commentary.
The season mode is a good feature, but the load time is horrible. No one I know liked waiting for what felt like an eternity to see (Big boss man walking around the ring with the caption "BIG BOSS MAN is provoking EDGE.) Most of these cut scenes were entirely unecessary, and if you had the misfortune to have to sit through four of these plus the "simulated" matches in an event you wrestler wasn't even in, then you know what true boredom is.
The other game modes are very nice, and the control and actual gameplay are good, except the part where your opponent takes a mere 3 seconds to get up after a going for the last ride. It's frustrating when you chokeslam Debra (Debra, for cryin' out loud) through the top of the Hell in Cell and watch her get up 2 seconds later. I always thought that the damage system in War Zone was very effective and never understood why it didn't carry over into the other games. (but maybe there is a good reason that I don't know about)
Create a Wrestler mode is very good. The options are nice and with the ability to customize nearly every aspect of your fighter, my friends were able to reenact several classic Popeye episodes. The main snag in this mode was the lack of good clothes. Tons of swirly pants and not one evening suit?
For the most part, this is a good solid title, but definently a rental.
| Not Bad..... | | Evan from Chicago, IL says (9/Jan/2001): | The game play is AWESOME. The amount of wrestlers and different matches are AWESOME. I also like how realistic it is. The 2 things I don't like is that it takes A LOT of time to load in matches like the Royal Rumble everytime a new player comes out. The other thing I don't like is it interupts the events after what seems like every match. I think this is a REALLY good game w/ the exceptions of those things.
| this is just the begining | | The Evil Genius from Waterbury,Connecticut says (12/Jan/2001): | Well basically, this is the best wrestling game on any system in my opinion. With the exeption of it loading after a wrestler is thrown out (Royal Rumble mode) and no voices it would be the #1 game world wide. Also the create a charecter option is the best i've ever seen, being able to create everything on your "CAW" from head to toe,One more thing sd2's wrestler entrances could be better, not that their not great already but, i would like to see the wrestler come down the ramp, get into the ring and perform his/hers trademark entrance instead of them walking and seeing the video in the background the whole time. That Concludes my reveiw.
| Great but needs improvement | | Eric from Hornell, NY says (13/Jan/2001): | This is the greatest wrestling game I have ever played BUT needs a lot of improvement. To make this game the best possible the following needs to be done. Instead of having to simulate all the matches, you should just be able to say simulate all and go to your match. Then it should give you a chance to review the results and if there was interference. Second, instead of showing every little thing, show things that will only effect the player's wrestler or stable. I don't care if some lightweight wants to beat on some guy I never even heard of. Third, Royal Rumble, way to much loading. There has to be something to prevent it from loading every guy who comes in. Fourth, you should be able to make challenges and accept challenges. I don't like going through a whole month without a match. Fifth, give the option to interfere on matches you want, not only what someone else wants. On that same note let other wrestlers run in that aren't in the stable or tag team. Everyone has a favorite and everyone cares who wins. Make the #2 contender run out and make the #1 contender lose. Sixth, you should be able to make manager for a created wrestler. With all that being said I would like to restate that this game still rocks. The options are all great. It would be the greatest game if the season mode didn't take so long. It took me about an hour to get through 2 pay per views. That might not seem to long but when I only had 2-3 matches that gets pretty boring. Keep the options, keep the amount of wrestlers, just shorten the season. You can put a lot more fun stuff without having all that in the season.
| Best Ever?........I Think Not..... | | Messed from CALGARY, CANADA says (24/Jan/2001): | Alright, yes there are tons of characters, matches and create a character options, but the loading time to watch cut scenes that don't effect you or change matches. I mean having to watching 4 minutes of loading before a match starts just to see that someone is provolking his oppoent in a match that is already scheduled just gets tedious and slows the season play to a point your bored with it. Also having to watch the life bars deplete for every simulated match instead of simply being able to simulate matches you are not involved in is one of the worst features I have ever seen. Also I seem to have a problem with fellow created characters that are in my stable coming out and attacking ME!!! during matches.....I mean these guys are supposed to be on my team and they come out to the ring to beat on me? that just seems like a bit of a glitch to me!!
The damage a character recieves from being put through a table or "super powerbombed off the top of the cell" is way too low!!
I mean anyone who gets a super powerbomb off the cell should not be able to get up before I can get down from the top of the cell, they shouldn't be moving at all after that, and getting up immediately after some specials or being put through the table just isn't right, also weapons should do much more damage.
but I think I have bad mouthed this game enough...it has many good qualities which others have mentioned, and it's potential is great, but the current game has too many problems to be considered the greatest ever and needs much improvement before it can even be considered great........GGDS!!
| Well, it was good, but not great | | Caz from Glasgow, Scotland says (25/Jan/2001): | The best game ever? it aint the best game ever, not yet by a long shot. It is a huge improvement on Smackdown1 in most respects, but in many respects it represents a step backwards.
While I respect the opinion of those who rave about the game, and who give it 10/10, I say to them, get a reality check. The game in no way deserves to be dubbed "The BEST game ever", let alone rated at 10/10 (that honour goes to Gran Turismo2) but it is a great game.
The graphics and in ring action, all beautiful in the original, are now even better. The number of characters has been almost doubled, and represents a wider range of characters than any other wrestling game.
The buggest plus point has to be, without a doubt, the create a wrestler mode. Gone is the dreary "choose a head, choose a body, choose legs" create a wrestler of the origonal, where the only customisation you get to choose os the colour of skin. Now EVERYTHING can be customised. It is a real plus point of the new game.
The season mode has also been enhanced, with 5 events per month instead of the 1 in the original, making for more in-depth gaming.
However, it is also the season mode which is the biggest gripe for me.
In my opinion, there are too many mediocre fights in a typical event. Too many fights are "Big Bossman v Mark Henry" and drivel like that. I'm not dissing either athlete (the term "athlete" is questionable when describing Mark Henry) but too many matches are taken up by the lesser stars, and not enough by the WWF Title contenders. A look at the belt records on my memory card reveals that the Light-Heavyweight and European titles have been defended many times, whereas me, (I'm HHH) i have only had 2 defenses in months of holding the belt.
Whoever thought up the health bar idea should be shot. The old way in Smackdown was much better and quicker. There are also too many cut-scenes where it is, for example "The Rock is here, tonight!" Who cares? There are also too many, again for example, too many "Shane McMahon is provoking Stone Cold" scenes where the two have a match. The Royal Rumble also takes too long to load.
The lack of commentary is probably a good thing, anyone who's played WarZone probably agrees with me, the commentary in that is too wooden and repetitive.
Another gripe is when you throw your opponent off Hell in a Cell, then 3 seconds later, they get up. Putting your opponent through the announce table also does very little damage either.
However, the game's plus points far outweigh the negatives. The create a stable feature, another plus point, is a really cool innovation, however, next time, why not make a stable 10 members? (like in WrestleMania 2000) It would also be good if you could issue challenges and attack others by your own choosing rather that being given the option to do so.
In conclusion, a good game, improvements can and must be made. How about Smackdown2 gameplay, with WrestleMania 2000 options? That, in my opinion, would be "that damned good"
| Pretty damn close to be the greatest wrestling game on the planet | | Omer from Canada says (27/Jan/2001): | I've played many wrestling games from WWF warzone to Smackdown 2. Obviously those were different times, but this game has a lot of things wrong with it. The reason is because the people that should be making the game are the fans of the WWF. If I had a chance to make a WWF game it would go through the charts. When you're wrestling you can't exactly listen to annoying music, have J.R.(the greatest wrestling announcer) announce the matches, the season mode is just too long I didn't play for almost two months and I don't really care if Scotty Too Hotty is getting his but kicked by some mid carder. The way I unlocked Stone Cold was really cool, umm during season mode why is Stone Cold fighting Road Dogg in a main event at either Raw is War or Smackdown. When did Road Dogg become a main event wrestler, also the fact that he just got fired from the WWF like hello. The Dudley Boyz steal the show with the 3D, but can somebody tell me how to do the 3D through a table? WWF Smackdown 2....simply amazing. Please someone email me with the answer if there is an answer.
| Not that great | | Fat Mike from Washington, USA says (30/Jan/2001): | Yes, this game is good, but I have a few major problems with it. First, it is too similar to the first one. Also, most of the new characters were just crappy ones like Viscera and Scott Taylor. Next, no blood. The characters also get up way too fast. Powerbomb a guy of the top of the cage, and he gets up 5 seconds later! And the season mode sucks. You have to wait about an hour between each one of your matches, and watch crappy cinematics after almost every match that take a hell of a long time to load. And most of them just show somebody showing up in the arena. And then you have to sit through another load when they're finished! The special matches suck, too. I will admit, though, that this game has fast, intense matches, and the graphics are great. And I loved driving a forklift into my opponent! I say that it's worth a rent, but don't bother buying it if you have the original.
| So its the best but not amazing | | The Undertaker from Cardiff - Wales says (4/Feb/2001): | THQ are you listening.
WWF Smackdown 2 is a good game but for a few points :
1.Why the stupid boring cut-scenes ?
For instance the ones where it says
"Someone is provoking someone" or simply a whole cut scene to show a wrestler sitting on a chair nodding his head.
2.LOADING TIMES. This spoils the Royal Rumble mode.
Ok so I have badmouthed thisgame for a while now so its only fair I give a few suggestions :
1.Get rid of those BORING cut scenes
2.Try to improve loading times
3.Make damage more realistic you throw some one off the top of the cage in a Hell in a Cell match and they get up seconds later.
4.Make it for the Playstation 2 so loading times will be shorter and graphics will be better.
I think you have heard enough if THQ read this and the other articles here (NOT the ones that gave it 10/10 because they are just hardcore fans and dont see the faults in the games)and take note of suggestions I will be looking forward to WWF Smackdown 3 for PS / PS2 >;o)
| Now Loading the Loading...the 1 and only flaw! | | Dwayne Johnson from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida says (6/Feb/2001): | Smackdown! 2:Know Your Role, was by far the best wrestling game sofar, as far as up to date wrestlers goes. However, the constant loading screens and intros to matches in season mode, makes it damn near impossible to finish a year, or a month for that matter, and have time to spare. I strongly suggest that if THQ plans on another follow-up, that all the "Create-a-..." modes, should be on a separate disk, making room for loading time on the main disk. Dispite this fault, I think this is the best yet, and I hope it only gets better!
| The best game on the Wrestling Market...The future is SmackDown 2 | | Burntwist_Thug from United States, Florida says (10/Feb/2001): | Yes, the one wrestling game I've beens earching for since the first time I played Monday Night Raw for Sega! Graphis are a big hit, the backstages a big hit, the moves, wrestlers, options and creating stats are big HITS! You can do just like the real T.V. show. Just some things take time. Make a stable, make a manager, make a pay-per-view, and BAM! You've got your own hit. You can make your own wrestlers to go with it. Yeah being powerbombed off the top of the cell and getting up seocnds later is fake. But people, if the computer or your friend were versus you and they did that to you..wouldn't you want to get up and get your revenge? You wouldn't want to wait 10 minutes just so they can jump off the cell and land on you. The cut scenes can be better but they are exciting to watch. Never know what cut scene you are going to get. Just like you are never going to know what you are going to get in the real show. THQ have done their best, but they can do alot better, simply with the loading. And some things need to be up to date. Val-Venis, K-Kwik, Raven so on. And the table matches are kick butt! You can jump off the top rope and land ont he oppenent, putting them through the table. You can rock bottom them through it, powerbomb, and pile drive them through it. And with the ladder it's even better! You can just get a hardy and do the Senton Bomb off the ladder putting them opponent through that table! Oh yeah it's fun. But more tables need to be added in the TLC matches. All in all, bottom line, this game has the best game-play, graphics, and options out in the Playstation Wrestling market.
| I like the game but I think THQ could have done better | | Corey from Lorain, USA says (21/Feb/2001): | Dislikes
1. The game takes to long to load. On the season mode they load for the dumbest things like when a group is talking they don't say what they are talking about.
2. This is not a big conCern but why don't they use a new title they have 12 ppv names they can use one of those. I don't want every ps/ps2 wwf game being called smackdown.
3. The season mode is pointless it takes forever to finish a season, they should just make the season mode like no mercy for N64. You play a season and get the belts or something worth getting.
4. The ranking, I don't know about everyone else but I hate the rating. I know its realistic but anyone should be able to go for the belts at any time
5. THERE IS NO BLOOD. I beat people to death on the game and there is no blood.
Likes
1. The graphics are good, Some of the wrestlers look real
2. The types of matches are the greatest. Table, Hell in a Cell, Casket(which is not that good), Slobber Knocker, Ladder, an TLC
3. The entrances are alot better than the first Smackdown
