A total let down | | A gamer from Stockton California says (1/Dec/2000): | I must say after completing the first Driver I couldnt wait for a sequal...well...I got one. What joke!! Whoever programmed the physics for this game must have been smoking something. Its like trying to drive on the moon! Case in point the Havana mission where you have to ram the amo truck with the silver escort car chasing you. Not only is that the fastest, best handling damn cargo truck Ive ever seen, but your car seems to have shocks made from Nerf. Dont see what I mean, play the level and try to follow the truck accross the park, hit on of those grassy mounds and watch your car fly ( in apparent slow motion ) while the truck takes off and the chase vehical sends you flying. Or make that first right but dont count on making the corner, you might be doing what seems like 30 mph but that wont keep your car from jumping 2 or 3 stories in the air when you hit the building. On the upside I like the cinimatics alot better in this game, its helps alot actually seeing the characters mouths move. Unfortunatly this does not excuse the frustration of watching a 3 ton delivery truck smoke a mid 80's luxery car on a straight stretch of 4 lane highway. The pedestrian vehicles appearing out of thin air dont help the fun factor any either.
| What the hell? | | Damian from Brantford,Ontario,Canada says (14/Feb/2003): | Allthough I was`nt that dissapointed in this game i was however misstified at the fact of how horrible the graphics are i mean come on 2d supermario was 100% better than this garbage the cut seens are done beautifully however and the plot just gets thicker and thicker it would have been nice to figure out who the hell the gunman was I meen it takes like all of your patients just to beat that level just to find out that you get stiffed and you don`t get to see who the gunman was at all the hardest level in this game is when you steal Vasquez`s ammo trucks allthough most you people have`nt even beaten this game yet don`t give up i thought that level was the last one seriously but it was`nt i had a fit when i beat that damb level as for the game it self i give it seven because i was on the edge of my seat the whole time and i could`nt believe how great it was to finaly play a game where you get to steal cars in 3D and not birds eye krap when you first start this game you are really thinking it`s going to be a flop like the first driver but then you are completley surprised buy what happens after the first 2 levels great game really great game and i would recomend it to any car stealing maniac who honks there horn to much.
| JOHN BEGGS SAYS, | | John Beggs from Mill City OR. 97360 says (24/Jan/2001): | Driver one was a very cool game, so when i saw a demo for Driver 2 I was ecstatic (You can steal cars, COOL!). Then when I Played it I saw a lot of flaws. First, If you are going to make a game two player at all, you should at least make it decent. Yeah, you can play some decent modes but there are absolutely no options at all. No other cars, No alternate views, nothing that will make it very interesting. As for the game itself, it freezes quite often, the graphics are terrible (Except for the Video Clips, Which ROCK by the way), the cities themselves have quite a few glitches in them, like falling through the road and into oblivion, buildings that appear out of nowhere ect. However, the bridges (Way Cool), secret areas, alleys and all the stuff that you can run over are VERY COOL.
I LOVE the car stealing idea. (It's things like that that make a game cool, entreas in a manner of speaking.) Trust me the more you can do stuff like that, the better the game, and the more people who will buy it. you see if you make good games you will EASILY make good money. (make it a multiple disk set or something) Anyway, all in all this game rates a five in my book.
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY RATING, Later...
| Very Hard, non addictive, but challenging | | Antonio Rio from Mexico says (11/Dec/2003): | I agree, the graphics suck big time, It`s a very challenging game, but I can`t play it for more than 10 minutes, I`m now at "chase the gunman", the mission before that one was an epic triumph for me to do it, chase the gunman is simply impossible, I always fall into the sea and I hate when the so-called gunman hits another car and simply blows them away!!! and when I crash into another one I get stuck, completly stopped by it. Also if you could level the hardness of the game, would be alight, not even with cheats I can complete these mission, Does anyone of you have an advice for me? It would be very helpful. My pride incites me to beat that game, although is one, if not the hardest game I have ever played. I really love that you can drive in an actual city, also that you can destroy your car, get in wrong lanes, steal a bus, drive in parks, the jumps in boats and into the ferry was awesome!!! I swear that I won“t break my PS in a mad anger attack.
Definetly a game for those blokes that would like to be geezers, and also very useful game if you want to learn to escape from the policeman, it actually has taught me a little maneuvers that can be applied in real life!!!
| Oh, What a Let Down! | | Sean from Maine, United States. says (5/Apr/2003): | The original Driver was fantastic. So when I found out that a sequel was coming out I bought it without even renting it first. Now I'm so mad at myself for doing that.
Sure, you can get out of the car. Sure, you can hijack other vehicles. But there isn't enough vehicles to steal. When I bought this game I thought you could drive cars like the pedestrian vehicles in Driver 1. Like a station wagon or one of those 2 door vinal topped saloons or even one of those Pinto like things for laughs. Plus, It's still impossible to run over pedestrians. They all look the same and they even run away from you when you're on foot.
The Missions are frustrating due to the crappy physics of the game. Ecspecialy in the Havana mission where you have to catch that Damn truck. As soon as it starts the truck (Which is the slowest vehicle in the city) takes off like a bat out of hell and you're car (which is one of the fastest cars in the city) begins to sluggishly accelerate like a snail on ritalin, all the while the hideous grey escort car is ponding the hell out of you with cheap shots from the rear.
In short, this game sucks. The original Driver is much better.
| Challanging and dfficult | | Eugene from JOHANNESBURG SOUTH-AFRICA says (20/Jul/2004): | Driver 2 is a cool chase, getaway game. Should have given more option and faster cars but enjouyable none the less. I am stuck at the Boat jump seen should I jump of the boat or take the exit as I made the entrance. Somebody mail me and give me a hint PLEASE. dteugene< remove me > at yahoo.co.uk
I feel that the AI is a little to much in surtain stages of the game and the chases are a little unfair because the computer has the abillity to out run you and beats you with sudded acceleration. The story in this game is ultra cool and I think that vascis is acctually Jones your partner, but I have to finnish the gameto find out. If anybody think this game suck you have to read your mind. I think this is much better than your average car game.
The actual seens where this game takes place is devised in a cool manner. Taking shortcuts eliminates the long drives and also gives you extra time (Seconds added to the time) I say this game is a must buy for anybody who enjoys chase and getaway games. But watch tose tempers flying and please to avoid any animosity between your parents, girlfriends and wives watch your language.
KEEP PLAYING
| Most exciting game for the playstation | | Daniel from Seattle, Washington, USA says (12/Jan/2002): | This is my most favorite game that I have because it has the excellent graphics. Real-life style for example people walking around that you can scare away the the horn, you can crash other cars and steal them including police cars, fire engines, limos, and ambulances. You can unlock hidden cars like the Ute in Vegas, the morris minor in Havana, a semi in Rio and a Sport car in Chicago. In this game you can actually the cops talking in 3 different languages English (for Chicago, and Vegas), Portugese (for Rio) and Spanish(for Havana) You can play 1 player or for 2 players. One of the worst things in this game are one of the undercover missions called "Chase the Gunman" it is the mission that I had a hard time with, all others seemed easy. The best way to have fun and almost not stop laughing is to put on invisibility than to choose survival. You can't die unless you flip over and cops stop ramming you car, this way the cops should hit you and you should jump of the air. In all turned out beter than the original driver because you can get out of the car.
| Driver 2 good, but some annoying mistakes... | | Brian from Toronto, Canada says (21/Nov/2000): | I thought the original was amazing, so I bought Driver 2 as soon as I could, but was really disapointed with what I got. I expected the one player (Undercover) to be basically the same as the first, with some minor mods, which it is, so the multiplayer was really appealing. It sucks. 2-player "Take a ride" is without any other cars or cops, so it gets boring in about2 minutes, and in all the modes there is only one view (in the car view) which normally I always use anyway, but in Driver its just not as fun when you can't see your near misses or damage or hubcaps rolling off on steep turns. It just takes away from it, but really, having no other cars completely ruins the multi mode. The rest of the game is really good, except that there is lots of slowdown on the Chicago level, and unforunately the game is not fully compatible with the PS2 if you want to use the smooth texture mapping (it often freezes, usually just as you are about to reach the goal of a level) altho for the most part it works, and it makes the game look a lot better.
| Its Not as It Looks Like | | Lucas from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil says (30/Dec/2003): | The game is ok, but somethings I just couldn't let go. I live in Rio de Janeiro, and ok, the game designers sure gave importance to reality. The district names are real, as much as the locations; the designers gave special atention to places as much as touristic sights troughtout the city (and Rio has too many, such as the "Arcos da Lapa", the Cathedral, the "Petrobras" building close to it, the Copacabana Beach unique sidewalk, the Monunment to the deads in WW2 in flamengo, as they really are! Even the trash cans are orange like that!). But the buildings, in general, are not old and ugly as appear in the game, as much as the cars!!! What about the video that Tanner and Jones talk on the shore? The streets are not dirty like that! And also, i heard the cenario has a hidden beach with monkeys over the palmtrees!?! Thats simply ridiculous! Rio is a wonderfull city, and has no monkeys or snakes crawling over the streets! The cars are new, the building are fine, and specially the women are great!! (women is missed in Driver 2, also) :P
| Its good, but not that good | | David Andrews from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia says (4/Feb/2004): | I have played and finished Driver 2 and while it is good, it is not great. I liked the fact that you could get out of your car this time, which was handy. The missions were well done, if a little easy, and it was good just being able to cruise around.
The graphics sucked though, not straining the capabilities of the playstation at all. All the cars oversteered and, though it may lokk spectacular, sideways is the slowest way through any given corner. And the damage might as well have not been there. During one mission, i was flat out with a cop right behind me, sirens blaring, lights flashing. Another cop came off a side street and clipped my rear end. I couldnt correct the car, and i ended up attatched to a pole. I reversed about two feet before being rammed right back in again. This should have resulted in me having a light pole poking out my roof, but i reversed, drove off, took two corners and i had lost the cops. Hmmm. Maybe something like GTA or gran turismo would be more the way to go
| Driver 2 | | Paul Jones from UK, Cardiff, Wales says (26/Nov/2000): | Great game overall, thoroughly enjoyed playing it, however did anyone notice a huge dufference between this and the first installment? Ok, when all said and done it probably is the finest driving game on the psx however is it worth another £40.00 of my hard earned wages? The graphics were excellent and as always the game has a huge lifespan due to its originality and 'fun factor' however it does have its limits. One feature I was eagerly anticipating was the 2 player mode, however found myself fairly dissapointed upon discovering that I was unable to change the camera angles of the game and had to make do with a dodgy, uncontrollable screen. Secondly, a great idea to be able to get out and steal another car, however there isnt exactly much choice when it comes to picking a new vehicle is there? In
my opinion the game is well worth a look however should you own the first title then I would suggest perhaps borrowing or renting it out first.
| "CHASE THE GUNMAN" LEVEL | | Marco from Porto Alegre, Brazil says (5/Jan/2004): | Nothing but the most difficult level. Just like the Mexican guy said, i simply can't pass this level too. I'd like an advice. Any help I think will be useful. Please contact me.
On the other hand, all this level has of dificulty, the game has of interesting and make us keep hours in front of it.
Terrific!
Here is part of what the Mexican guy siad: "I agree, the graphics suck big time, It`s a very challenging game, but I can`t play it for more than 10 minutes, I`m now at "chase the gunman", the mission before that one was an epic triumph for me to do it, chase the gunman is simply impossible, I always fall into the sea and I hate when the so-called gunman hits another car and simply blows them away!!! and when I crash into another one I get stuck, completly stopped by it. Also if you could level the hardness of the game, would be alight, not even with cheats I can complete these mission..."
Thanks anyway!
| Didn`t live up to expectations...but worth having for fans of driver 1. | | eddie shanks from kansas city,mo says (25/Nov/2000): | After having read some previews online, and learning all the new features..I WAS PUMPED !!!!! i immediately got a copy, and dove in...This is essentially a good review, although,as you may have guessed, i`ve got issues... here we go. The new features are pretty cool, especially jacking other people cars, and the locales are much improved over driver 1. The difficulty on some levels is pretty stiff, even for a hard-core driver such as myself. But i imagine the less dedicated will find it RIDICULOUS!! I was particularly dissapointed with the flatness of most levels..not enough stuff to get air off of..(one of my favorite things about the original).and the roaring squeal of your ride..were is it? the cars in this one sound like sewing machines!! Add in some minor slowdown, and too many seriously wimpy cars, and this game actually falls short of it`s predecessor in overall fun. (and thats what it`s all about)
| Great game, fun, and it kept me busy; even with a few freeze-ups. | | D. B. from Wisconsin, USA says (23/Aug/2001): | Great game that could hold your attention, if you actually take the time to admire the beauty of the game. The devastating crashes, the police having no consideration for the civilian drivers, car chases, e.t.c. Carjacking is the best feature of this game. It's kinda like a 3D Grand Theft Auto, minus the weapons and cussing pedestrians. Engine sounds are somewhat realistic, with some cars that sound like a Ford Festiva, But that's a pointless observation nobody else would care about.
The pedestrian vehicles do stop when you get right in front of them, but not when you blare your horn during a chase. They just sit there like they're braindead or something.
The different languages of the police are a nice touch, too. Some cars are just plain abyssmal, but they sound good.
THIS IS TO ANYONE WHO SAYS DRIVER 2 BITES:
Actually PLAY the game through before judging it, okay?
| Great Game, Bad Graphics. | | kyle says (29/Jan/2001): | When I had Driver 1 I loved it so much because it was the perfect plot. A getaway driver. It was just like a movie. When I heard Driver 2 was coming out and it would have more levels, 2 players, and new cities I wanted it so badly. I got it the day it came out, I played it and I looked at the graphics and yelled to my mom "are you sure this is driver 2. She said yes. Then when I played the actual part of the game I thought the storyline was so great. And I figured out that you could get out of your car and steal someone else's. But it kept on freezing up when I started it. You couldn't see a building until you were a couple of feet away and the cops jumped out of nowhere. So the conclusion is that if the people had taken more time on the graphics it would be better. I know they did it though to get it on the shelves for Christmas but to tell you the truth it's not as good as Driver 1.
| pretty bad ass game | | JW Statler from Jourdanton, Texas, USA says (9/Jan/2002): | This game is the hardest game i have ever played. It took me like 8 months to beat it, but i finally got the hang of it and became a master at turning corners and doing 180's, plus i can get away from any cop in the game i can also stay away from the cops in survival mode, i once lasted for like 2 minutes. the graphics in the game were way better than the first, what the other ppl sayed about it being the same as the first have no judgement and dont own more than 5 games unlike me i own like 100 different games. The first one was a game that let u choose the level u wanted but not the cars if ths one let u choose a level it would ruin the stroy line but thats a good thing because the first one's story line was dumb. I also had to use a gameshark on like levels at the end because the programmers were dumb and made them the hardest and they should hve made them all the same.
| IT'S DA BOMB!! | | NATHAN from PERRIN, TX U.S.A says (31/Dec/2000): | I was totally impressed with Driver 2, I just got it for Christmas and once I turned it on I was in love with the graphics, the story line, the cars, EVERYTHING!! My whole family also enjoys the game and sometimes I have to bargain with my dad just so I can play!!
Anyways, on to the game, when I first played I noticed the improvements in the buildings, the way the cars react and many other things, unlike in Driver 1 when you honk at a car the car reacts by moving over or stoping instead of ramming into you like in the first game. Also, the stories in between the game are awesome and you get a better "feel" of the game unlike in Driver 1 where you could only see Tanner from a far. Another thing, the cities are a lot bigger and you can driver farther around the cities.
In all, I hope that there is a sequel to the whole Driver series and if there is I can't wait!!
| What an improvement! | | Simon Laythorpe from England says (3/Feb/2001): | I purchased driver 1 the day it came out on psx, i went home and played it and i was so glad that this type of game had been made, you could drive any where you liked fast, slow, crazy what ever, but i still think that the graphics are very poor for driver on the psx. Then about 4 weeks ago i finaly got round to buying Driver 2, and it was such an improvement. I think the graphics are 10 times better, game play has improved 10 fold fmv's every thing. I was a little put off about buying Driver 2 because Driver 1 was poor graphics and i wanted to wait for it to come out on pc, but i finally couldnt wait any longer and got it. And im so glad i did everthing is better to the sound track to the stupid hub caps that come flying off! also Driver 2 has a splash of gta in and that makes it brillent. i give this game 10/10 just because of its improvement!
| the funnest game!! | | wee ittle boy from reno, nevada, united states says (18/Apr/2002): | This game will keep you busy for hours, you get to find secret cars and get chased by police exc exc.. well i think this game is just fun! steal cops and get felony and it has a great story line too. i got stuck i few times in the missions but i got it. if your stuck, well dont know what to tell ya, just keep trying. my favorite thing about this game is stealing cars. its alot easier than driver 1 but i beat d1 in 1hr because it was so easy. this one is fun with alot of challenges, thats why its so fun, it well just keep you in front of that old tv playing away! when i first got it i couldnt wait to play it. the first 2 levels well get boring but when you get rio and vegas youll be driven around the city lookin for stuff and more stuff. well again this game i found is very fun. the worlds scariest police chases are funner but you get the idea.
| Lame and too hard | | Crosso from Auckland, New Zealand says (5/Jan/2002): | I has to sll this game because it was too hard, and too depressing when you couldn't get past that section. I thought the graphics were average and worse than Driver 1, the car handles worse than 1, and the cops, as one other reviewer said, will slam you for anthing. The cops seem to be able to anticipate your every move, and this isn't great compared to the more realistic AI on Driver 1. In one part of the "drive around" mode, I was trying to get to part of the city. I was on the right side of the road, behind other cars, perfectly normal, and I got slammed !
The two player section isn't much chop when you can only have just the two cars, and nothing else, it all gets a bit boring !
Overall, I didn't rate this game at all. I only got to about a third of the way through, so I guess that it would be a good long game of you make it.
