Great addition to the Evil Dead series.. Hail to Bruce Campbell!1366

JediAaron from Pearl City, Hawaii says (29/Dec/2000):
This game looks, sounds, and feels like you get to be a part of the great film series that is Evil Dead. It wouldn't be the game it is if it wasn't for the awesome contribution of Bruce's voice-overs. Absolutely outstanding! I've been looking for a RE type game with the same 'human' addition of some comedy and plain sarcasm, done perfectly in movie form and now in the video game genre. Aside from the great nostalgic scenes, environment, cinematics, and the great dialogue, the game begins to dwindle slightly in the gameplay itself and basic controls. As already mentioned before, the simple fact that picking up items and general exploration are hindered by endless 'spawning' of Deadites makes the game hard to get immersed in upon starting out. I have found that once you manage to get some long-range weaponry, it makes progression much more easier. Only after 1/2 through the 1st disc do the Deadites slow down in their relentless attacks. A good strategy is to collect as many first aid kits as possible through limited battles before venturing past the RedNeck house. After that point, kits are slightly less plentiful. During your first battles outside Ash's cabin, try to battle one Deadite at a time from a corner of the cabin. This helps prevent the enemy from landing every singe blow, while giving you an advantage due to a weapon on each arm. You will be able to bring one weapon to bear on the enemy while giving yourself room to back up and escape if necessary. The control itself is basic and rudimentary in nature, but lacks the smooth control during rotation and evasive movements of the character you would expect from a 'quality' RPG. Aiming is simply a matter of focusing on the 'shadow' of the enemy and pointing Ash in that general direction. The game progresses fairly predictably, you should not have too much difficulty location key items and book pages if you pay close attention to the clues offered in the cinematic sequences. If anyone has any questions or comments, or even advanced hints, feel free to email me. In summary.. hail to the king baby!!

Evil Dead: Great Movie, Bad Game1005

Mike Genova from Damariscotta ME USA says (12/Dec/2000):
I was very excited to get this game, it looked really cool in all the reviews, and being a big fan of the movies, and Bruce Campbell, i was psyched. So I load the thing up and sit through a totally sweet opening video, with voice acting done by Bruce himself. It was good looking, it was funny, I'm ready to go. The game starts, and It's your standard survival horror game, I picked up some shiny objects, and started exploring the cabin. The controls are just like Resident Evil, actually, a lot of the game play is just like Resident Evil, which is good, becuase that was a good game. I've got a chainsaw for one arm and an axe in my hand, so i venture outside of the cabin. There an evil thing appears to kill me. I manage to hack it up with realitive ease, I lose some health, but I get a medkit when I kill it. You get a medkit after you kill everything, but you'll need them. Immediatlly after I kill the first guy, another one appears, about half way through killing the second guy, a third appears. Now this is why I didnt like the game. There are too many friggin bad guys. There are so many It's not even challenging, It's just annoying. You can't even stop to pick up an item without being thwomped by some evil dead thing. It hinders the gameplay, because there is really no time when your not getting attacked, so you have no time to think about anything else. It's almost like they got done making the game and figured it was too easy, so they added respawning bad guys. So basically, It's a game with good graphics, funny, but good, voice acting, good controls and gameplay, and impressive cut scenes, but way to many friggin bad guys.

I love Evil Dead, I would have given this a 10, but there is one small problem...1305

Dani from New York, USA says (27/Dec/2000):
Now, first of all, it is a good game. The voice acting is great, done by Bruce himself. The graphics are done well. Bruce looks enough like himself. And also, the game is pretty funny. Taunting the stupid deadites is always fun. (And at the start game screen dont press the start button. Bruce will start saying up to seven different phrases such as, "C'mon today!" and "Paging player, press the start button!")
I'm also a big Evil Dead fan, and a fan of Bruce Campbell, so you can see why I gave it an 8. But, here comes the small problem.
Now, I walk out of the cabin, kill the first deadite. Then two more appear. As soon as I kill them, two more appear. The game is crawling with so many badguys its impossible. It is the hardest game I've ever played so far, just because of the fact that it gets annoying. You have no time to do anything but fight deadites untill they kill you. I NEVER use a game shark for games, but I'm strongly considering it.
I would recommend this game to any Evil Dead fan, just because it's a nice collectors item and it can be fun. Make sure that if you aren't an Evil Dead fan, that your good at survival horror, because this is the hardest survival horror game I've played in a long time. The game may be hard, but it is fun to just play if you're bored. If anyone finds any neat tricks to help with this game, or any good walkthroughs(Incase I get stuck somewhere again), let me know. Thanks for your time. And make sure when considering this game, that even tho it's fun, it can be annoying.

Shop smart, shop s-mart, YA GOT THAT!!!1686

Name's Ash, housewares from Chicago IL home of DA BEARS! says (14/Jan/2001):
The evil dead triology is my favorite of all time(Army of Darkness is my personal favorite). When i was recently at the store i saw this game and nearly crapped my pants. I sped home threw the game in and sat down to play it. First off the bad, upon starting the game i noticed it was like a resident evil game. that sucks, but because it's evil dead i can get over it. when i started running around i got immeditley pissed off at the amount of bad guys. they never stop coming. iwas almost instantly killed.a good stratagey is to alternate weapons when attacking.the amount of bad guys really sucks.on to the good. Ash's one liners are the highlight of the game nothing better than taunting deadites and the finishers are awesome. it's really cool that Bruce Campbell did all the voice overs.I love the story line it follows the movies closleyand doesn't do shame to the movies.the graphics are awesome and the gameplay is very simple to understand.probably the best part of the game is the deatail. these guys spent serious time watching the movies.Everything is there the broken dishes from the fight with his hand, the dear head and cellar in the cabin, the shed with the tools, the bathroom, the redneck cabin. I also thought that having linda in the game was a nice touch. the health items are also cool(baloney sandwich w/ too much mayo). serious time was put into this game and i would reccommdend it to anyone who likes the movies.A gameshark would definetly help you play this game.

Evil Dead: A Classic, or Just Another Game?1397

Matt Parsons from California says (30/Dec/2000):
I am a VERY big fan of the Evil Dead movies, so no doubt I would buy the video game. I was expecting a lot out of this game, but I didn't get that much. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game and all, but it isn't something to write home about. The game revolves around Ash, our favorite, one-liner spewing, chainsaw -swinging hero (Voiced by Bruce Campbell, who played Ash in the movies. A plus!) As he takes his new girl, Jenny (No Linda? That doesn't have an Evil Dead touch to it) to the infamous cabin in the woods. Why Ash would go back there again I have no idea. As usual, the tape recorder (which holds the translations to the Book of the Dead, an evil book that raises zombies) turns on, causing the evil in the woods to rise and capture Jenny. Now Ash must defend against the evil with his chainsaw, axe, and other assorted weapons. Basically, the game can be described as "A guy with a chainsaw runs around killing zombies". But I found some of the game unsatisfactory. The Deadites aren't even zombies, they're ghost-creatures. And most of all, Ash's famous line, "Groovy", has no feeling to it. It sounds like it was spoken by a Bruce Campbell impersonator. The gameplay was really good, though. Easy to understand. The graphics were good, but Ash didn't look like... well, Ash. Maybe if they made the deadites creepy zombies rising out of the ground and added in the original "Groovy" sound wave from "Evil Dead 2", this game would get a 10!

If you liked the movies, you'll love the game.1369

John from Cape Coral, Florida, USA says (29/Dec/2000):
I recently received the Evil Dead game for Christmas. I have so been looking forward to it ever since I heard they were making it. The game was even beter than I hoped. I don't really like Resident Evil type games, but this one was a must have. They really pushed the envelope on the grapics. Ash looks great. I was very pleased to see how he came out. The scenery, Oh my god, I was getting freaked out in the forest. They also did an awesome job adding the other elements like the church and the campground. The finishing move was a nice touch. I love guttin' deadites. The FMV's that pop up at times during the game are some of the funniest scenes I've heard on any video game. Ash's quick wit and one liners are really the high point of the game. Sound effects are great too. The chainsaw, shotgun, footsteps, and everything sound as true as they can. I loved the "Join us" you hear at various times. The only problem I had with the game was that it was too short, and too easy. I beat the game the day after Christmas. It took me less than 4 hours to do it. It wasn't that difficult to figure out how to kill the deadites, or how to solve the puzzles. I hardly ever had to load a saved game due to dying. The replay value is good just to see the FMV's again. Bruce Campbell had a much bigger role than I thought. I had no idea he was going to have that many lines. I hope they're planning a sequel. Long live the King!

Cool, but near impossible game. Way too many repititious baddies.1415

A gamer from Memphis, TN U.S.A. says (31/Dec/2000):
I was very excited to get this game. I knew it was coming, so I had very high expectations. I love the movies and thought the game would all-out kick butt! I pop it in and spend nearly 2 hours just fighting the same repititous deadites. Then, I die, with only accomplishing going around to the different sites and killing nearly 300 baddies. All I got was the shovel, like 50 mushrooms, a crowbar, bullets, and a crank with which I did absolutely nothing with! So, now I'm back to the beginning, still unknowing of anything that happens. I don't see how these guys do it that say the beat it in a few hours, because it beat the crap out of me for a few hours! Call me retarded, call me what you will, I can't figure it out or get past the endless flock of enemies to save my life! Then, when I try to run from them, they appear in front of me and one gets in back, and then I'm really cussing! I use my medikits as quick as I get them! Very good graphics and sound effects, Bruce looks great, backgrounds are killer. But, guys, why make it like mission:impossible? 4 enemies should be the limit on each screen change! These guys take life repeatedly! I thought it was cool that it was a double disc, even though I may never even see the second!

Evil Dead: Keep your Boomstick handy; you'll need it.1556

Dave from Albany N.Y. USA says (5/Jan/2001):
Being a huge fan of the Evil Dead trilogy, I expected a great game. After waiting through the delays in the stores near me, I finally bought it. The intro was cool and the voice acting was good, but as soon as I started the game, the frustration began. At first, I was enjoying the scenery. It looked pretty damn close to the movie. Then, I looked around the cabin, and headed outside. 5 mins later, I was already getting pissed off. The enemies just kept coming!! I spent more time hacking away at the endless Deadites, than actually enjoying the game. Also, not to complain, I thought Ash's voice coud have used a bit more... spunk. Bruce Campell sounds like he's half dead. Even his "Groovy" wasn't... well... he just doesn't sound like he's enjoying the job he's doing. His voice acting could have used some feeling. But all in all, the voice was good. I mean, no one could have filled Bruce Campbell's shoes when it comes to Ash. But it was the damn enemies that really just made the game impossible. Evil Dead fans, and fans of a less stressful nature should give the game a try. It lives up to most of MY expectations, but THQ, still could have given the "Respawn" thing the boot. Or at least a good Boomstick shot to the head.

Hail to king,baby!1700

MediaMan says (14/Jan/2001):
I have loved the Evil Dead series ever since I saw the end of Army Of Darkness while channel surfing.Though I tried not to set my hopes too high,I was rather exicted about this game. So,I finaly get the thing,(they must have delayed it twenty times)I read through the instructions manuel(I'm just the kind of guy who does that),I pop it in my Playstation, turn out the lights, just for the feel,& start. The introduction was cool,I got exicted.I start to play.I'm not let down.
The controls are awkward, but I got used to them fast. The deadites mulitply like rabbits at many points, but don't let that get you down.I didn't know what to do for awhile until I found the lawnmower cord. The rest I absolutly loved. If the occasionally ramant deadites are too tough for you, you can use a gameshark if you have one, but the codes don't work on the second disc. The cabin is just like in the movie, except pixelated, of course. The humour is good, the graphic are good,I thought the plot was great. It realy captured the Evil Dead look, feel,& style.Maybe I'm just rose-tinting this thing into a god,& I see how people can hate, but if you're a fan of the movies, you should at least rent it.

Hail to the KING. MAYBE?1810

Some Guy says (21/Jan/2001):
Most reviews i've read gave this game very bad reviews, after reading them i disscovered why. The people who reviewed them didn't fully understand the game and how it's played. Your Boomsticks aren't meant to kill, but to keep enemies at bay, your one-liners are great when used at the right times, finishing moves or when there are two or more deadites attacking you. The controls aren't that hard to get used to, play it for an hour and you should have it down. Yes the game could have been better, but all games could have, in my opinion, the game has good graphics, sound and excellent music. I found myself addicted to the game, once you learn the concepts of how it is played, the game is much better. It does seem hard at first but in the end the game is easy, I beat it within two days of buying it, roughly six hours total play to beat it. That actually dissapointed me but the game is good. If you like Evil Dead and Resident Evil, then this is the best thing to come out since sliced cheese. Adding humor, horror and a chiansaw, along with Bruce Campbell as Ash, this is a great game. Long live Evil Dead. HAIL TO THE KING BABY.

Gimme Some Profin, Baby!10694

Angel Vargas from Saint Paul, MN says (27/Oct/2002):
Evil Dead "Hail to the King" was developed by THQ as an answer to the now decade old question "When the hell are they gonna make the Evil Dead Videogame? THQ, it appears, has developed a game with a sense of humor not unlike the dry sarcasm of Bruce campbell and the slapsticky directing style of Sam Raime. Think about how hard the Ash character has had it in all the movies. All his friends (including a sweety that went through the seventies and the eighties in bad taste) were sliced and diced by Kandarian daemons that seemed to know how to fight more when they were in medieval Damascus. You would be mad wouldn't you? You'd want revenge right? Now put yourself into a game that plays a great deal like resident evil (and has controls that are just as sluggish) and go to it! It will be hard..deadites and x-girlfriends will give you hell, but damnit, you've got a chainsaw, expletives, intelligence, and guts. Trust me, that's all you need.

Ash, Zombies, Boom sticks.......How could anyone go wrong?2463

SJ Cecil from Archdale, NC (USA) says (10/May/2001):
Somehow, someone did. The game looks good, the voice overs are excellent but the game play and difficulty leave a lot to be desired. First of all, the game incorporates all the worst elements of resident evil. Like being stuck between screen changes while being attacked by a Zombie. The game plays a little more like Silent Hill because basic attacks are somewhat harder to pull off. I could see someone becoming easily frustrated playing this game the first time around. Its difficult getting used to controlling Ash, however the game itself is relatively simple once you get the hang of it. I beat the game in 4 hours and I didn't notice any type of extended game at the end like PE,RE2&3 or Silent Hill. If I'm going to shell out money for a game it needs to be a little longer or have more features than Evil Dead. I would advise anyone considering purchasing this game should rent it first.

Evil Dead A new spin on the Survival Horror Genre1639

Damien Haze from Leitchfield, Kentucky (USA) says (11/Jan/2001):
For THQ, the game is a breakthrough considering most of their games are horrible. The graphics are good, the gameplay is pretty simple, the storyline is very fresh and funny. I was rarely ever bored. But, just like all games, it has a few problems. First off, the deadites are overwhelming and sometimes the game will get glinches that keep your character from moving usually while you're fighting a enemy. Another problem, the game is way too short...I beat it in 2 and a half hours. At first the game is hard and annoying but once you got the Necronomican pages, the game flies. Overall, this is a good game. I would recommend it to a fan of the movie like myself, but I believe non fans of the movie will find it a very sad excuse at survival horror. But to be honest, survivor horror games are becoming very repetitive and its good to see a game break the ice a little.

One of the best survival horror in a while!1394

Matt DiCaprio from Cantoment,Florida says (30/Dec/2000):
I just beat the game a couple of hours ago. I enjoyed the game. The voice acting and graphics were great. The story-line was good althoughI wished they expaned on a couple things on disc 2. Also, I've read the other reviews... who cares if there is so many bad guys!!!! People think survival horror should be cloned like the Imortal classic Resident Evil. But sorry folks you're not killing zombies, they 're Deadites! Excuse me... Demons! You must remember these guys are not flesh and blood until they inhabit a person's body. So they are a little hard to get rid of. TO me the only drawback was an expansion of storyline. It was too short of a game I had beaten it in 3 hours and 42 min. THis is why I give it a 9 out of 10. Yet I am hoping for another one. Over all one hell of a good game.

a kick ass game but pretty hard1769

Jason Schlesinger from Ottawa, Canada says (19/Jan/2001):
I, being one of the worlds greatest fans of the trilogy, needed to get the game. I got the stratagy guide cause I suck at playstation games. So I pop the disc in and start the gaming. The controls are akward a first but once you get used to them then they are pretty good. The begining cinimatics are spectatular at worst and the game graphics a pretty good. So I get out of the cabin and save my game in the back yard. One thing this game lacks is you should be aloud to save when ever you want. So I go over to the hillbillies house through the skeletons maze get the cord and run back. Put the cord in kill some hicks and pork. When ever I leave the house to kill the giant tree person I get killed so I'm a bit angry about that but the game is a must have.

Good try, but could've been much better.1675

A gamer from Richlands, VA says (13/Jan/2001):
I bought this game expecting better. The game isn't bad, but it could be an extremely good game if not for a few small things. There are too(way!!!) many enemies. They just keep coming back over and over again. And it seems like you get hit at least once by every deadite. Also, sometimes you will get stuck and can't move for a second. This causes you to get a good butt-stomping. Plus you can't really run around the deadites because they either slash you as you go by or you get stuck on the enemy and can't move. The movie scenes are absolutly great though. This is a pretty good game but if the few little problems were not there, it could have been a pretty good Resident Evil clone. Too bad, especially for us huge Evil Dead trilogy fans.

just like the movie1333

Jeff from Seattle,WA says (28/Dec/2000):
Man this is definatly is the best suvival/horror movie i played i meen i look scary and stuff but the feel of it is just like the movies looks scary but isn't. But down to the reveiw the graphic are good a twitch every now and then but sides that dead on. Sound well that is one of its strongest points the voice overs and one liners make this game shine and they only use music when somethin important is going on so it gives you some clues. Alas it was kinda hard to start the control takes a little to get used to but once you do you be a choppin down deadite like you were gettin payed for it. So if you can get down the controlls then you'll love this game fan or no fan off the seris.

Come get some1831

Stymie from Lewisville, Tx USA says (22/Jan/2001):
look you guys i'm not sure what all the complaining is about. So it uses the same style as Resident Evil. Well if you could put two and two togather you would realize that the movies were spoofs of cheesy horror flicks...so, at least it looks to me, THQ developed a sense of humor and made the game a spoof of the most well known zombie game for the playstation. And about the complaints about too many monsters...you think Ash had it that easy? for the first time in a long while someone came out with a game i couldnt beat in one sitting. My only quirk with the game is when your fighting a deadite near a screen change and the scene keeps changing back and forth.

I think everything about the game rocks!.!.!1045

Andrew Matus from Midland,Michigan,USA says (14/Dec/2000):
I thought that the game's graphics, voice-overs, enemies, scenery, and gameplay was the best I've seen in a while. All my friends like it and so do I. think the people that don't like it don't like it cause they can't get anywhere. I had fun from the start and got a little frustrated but when you find things and get somewhere the game rocks the house. I am really into the game and I am glad I bought it. I am getting pretty far but I am stuck at the part of finding the weed killer to get into the church and cemetary. I think the game is the best and I reccomend it to every Evil Dead fan out there with the playstation game council.....!!!!!

What the Hell?!?2398

Ken Decoteau says (23/Apr/2001):
I bought this game for the same reason anyone else who is a fan of the movies, and owns a playstation would... Bruce Campbell. His face is on it... his voice is in it... this couldn't possibly be bad in anyway... right? WRONG! This game should have never been made! I think it was a great concept... I didn't even mind that they ripped of the Resident Evil game play... but the contol of this game SUCKS!!! I couldn't control him for the life of me. I died instantly when I started. It wasn't any fun, and Ash was about fun! Good luck with your next concept! I hear they might make a video game around Planet of the Apes. Just shoot me now!
