It out did my excpectations!!!!!!!!!! |
| Bryan from Slidell, USA says (21/Sep/2001): |
It ROCKED!!!!!!! It out did FF7 in many ways cause though FF7
had a awsome storyline (FF8 did also) the graphics the battle system and every thing else sucked. But FF8 took those to max. The graphics, the GFs, the battle system, and the in game cinemas all kicked butt, the only thing that sucked was the magic i like the mp type magic (the type where the spells dont have a limited number) better that having a quanity that u can lose cause i FF7 if u had a spell u kept the entire game.
But other than that it rocked!!!!!!!!!! *_*

Not the Best RPG, but good enough |
| 2GOOD4U from Fantasy Land says (15/Sep/2001): |
Final Fantasy 8 is nowhere near FF7, and to what I've heard so far some of the earlier ones too. But giving this less than a 10 is worthless, because if you like any RPG you can probably find at least a few good hours in this. It may not be as good as some of the other games, but it's still a lot of fun. There's some wierd scenes, that completely turn you off, like the dancing sequence, but once you get used to it, you will quite like it. But then most other people absolutely love it. But it's relevant to the story so I don't complain.
The story is different to other FF games, for all the main characters are the same age, and there are only six you can use really, although you have a taste of another five characters, this doesn't have to be a negative thing, after all it's a good change from all the other FF's out.
The graphics are great, not that I care but you might.
The musics, well, it doesn't have songs as memerable as the ones in FF7, but it's of good quality as always.
The story's pretty good, with some depth.
Replayability, just like any other RPG, you can play it over and over, to your hearts content, and not get bored. What I do sometimes is keep saves of parts of the game that are great fun and just go back to them when I want, like the train scene.
Overall, it's great doesn't need anything else, if someone gets bored, which I hardly think will happen easily, sooner or later you'll have that dream thing for a good change of scenery.

Everything I had expected from Final Fantasy |
| Steven dare from Omaha, NE, USA says (5/Sep/2001): |
I bought this game used when I bought my Playstation (used), and I loved it. I had heard a lot about Final Fantasy, including this movie they've made based on it, and I expected a lot, and I wasn't let down. It was stunning to see.
I was most surprized by how easy it was to learn this incredibly complex game. The game itself teaches you how to play it -- the first part is a test, given by one of the instructors at the school, and she runs you through a tutorial of how to use the game's features in the way that any teacher would. It was innovative and easy to learn, and, although it took me a little time to master, once I did it seemed very intuitive.
My biggest complaint is that you can't always save. When you're out on the plains, you can save anytime, but in cities or whatnot, you have to find special save points, and that bothers me. Also, drawing magic from enemies can be tedious and time consuming, and sometimes dangerous, but if you use magic to put them to sleep, then draw their magic from them, you should be okay.
All in all, this is a beautiful game, and I reccommend it to anyone who is a fan of complex and compelling RPG's with broad storylines.

Not as good as my expectations but damn good anyways |
| Brandon from San Diego says (12/Aug/2001): |
This game supplied a lot of hours of fun for me but it just wasn't Final Fantasy-ish for me. It lacked something that was in every other game. Not to put it down or anything I just don't think it's good enough to carry the "Final Fantasy" name. It's a very good game and I would suggest it to anyone but if you've played the other games don't expect the same charm.

A Fantastic game that wasn't quite what I expected |
| Bahamut from USA says (2/Aug/2001): |
I loved this game, and I think that it was a master piece. It had great graphics, great music, great battle system, but it lacks in the story and characters department compared to some of the other FFs.
The graphics were great, pushing the PSX to the limit, and the sound was great and there was a fantastic battle system. The only real problem was the story. It was good, but come on, this is Final Fantasy with great storylines like in FFIV, FFVI, and FFVII! The story never made you cry or yell (Except maybe the ending). Also, the characters weren't as good as some of the other ones. They were just not as cool as the other ones.
All in all, FFVIII was a great game, that just wasn't quite as good as some of the other games in the series. Here is my basic opinions:
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 9.9/10
Gameplay: 9.210 (Drawing was just to anoying)
Story: 8/10
Overall: 37.1 or 9.3/10

A Classic! |
| Jay2Sexay from Las Vegas, Nevada says (30/Jul/2001): |
This game was the shiznit! The story was good and the gameplay was amazing. Of course, there was some annoying random battles, but what RPG doesn't have stupid random battles. The graphics of the characters at times can be a bit jerky, but it still doesn't take away from the overall fun factor.

Its the best!!!! Get it!!! |
| Daniel Koh from Califronia, USA says (13/Jul/2001): |
This game's the best. At first I thought this junctioning and three peeps walking at the same time was lame, but its the best!!! If you still havn't played it, PLAY IT. The cinematics are clean and smooth, and even during regular gameplay, the characters are still tight looking. The characters don't look like blocks and circles anymore( which I think is a huge improvement), the music is cool( matches the scene), and the GF'S( summons)looks cool, and the plot it a work of a genius. The idea of a mercenary school is amazing. Also, Rinoa looks fine as hell!!!

ITS THE BEST!!!!! GET IT NOW!!!!!! |
| Daniel from Califronia, USA says (13/Jul/2001): |
Man, this game rocks!!!!! The story of a mercenary school that finds themselves in a greater conflict than they thought. And in the middle of it, is Squall, a lonewolf, who in time becomes a great leader and friends to many. The GFs are sweet, and clean. The Junctioning, drawing magic, whew....its the best!!! The cinematics are smooth and clean, and the characters don't look like little blocks with circles for heads runing around like FF7. But they look real, all throughout the game. This game is a work of a genius, and also the music matches the scene perfectly. No drawbacks in this game. I beat it 5 times, and I still see no flaw, you should get it now!!! Also, Rinoa looks so fine in the cinematics. My favorite cinematic is when the Galbadia Graden fights with Balamb Garden. You should get this game!!!!

Brilliantly Done |
| Kevin S. from Indiana says (8/Jul/2001): |
Easily the best in the series, Final Fantasy 8 breaks away from the others with a new 'junctioning' system, an in my opinion, makes battling alot easier than before. And the lively and vibrant characters will absolutely make you fall in the love with them, and the only time you'll be let down, is when it ends. The only game in the world that could top this game, would have to be a true sequel. :) Definently worth picking up if you have the spare change.

Who is the real enemy - other than Irvines trouser snake? |
| Chris And Adam from Co.Donegal Ireland says (30/Jun/2001): |
In the begining there was God and not much else, fast foward a few million years and we have the guy who brought us Final Fantasy 8 and Chocobo racing (but the less said about that the better.
Firstly the plot: The plot is confusing at best- for the idotic it goes like this: Evil sorcess controled by future sorcress who is using present evil sorcress to try and find someone from the present to "compress" time. Got it? If you understand that you need professional help and were not talking about your family GP here!
Main Characters: Squall- angry, loner, serious guy, whos having wierd dreams ( not THOSE sort of dreams ) He is joined by Instructor Quitis Trepe and Zell Dinch, a loud mouth but caring martial arts expert. Later in the game he is joined by Seifer (he turns evil, just thought you should know.) Selphie, Irivine and Rhiona ( Chris:Rhiona's a stiffner. Adam:Damn right)So anyway they set of to kill the sorcress (except Seifer cause hes evil remember?)To cut a really long story short they dont kill the sorcess, Squall becomes captin of the womens football team... i mean the captin of the garden, he fall in love with Rhiona aaaaahhhh bless!!!
The graphics are an improvememt on FF7, a big improvement and the cut scenes are breathtaking as you would expect from any game in the FF series
The musical score is awe inspiring. It is worth any Hollywood blockbuster. (unlike a certin harbour full of pearls which was blown up during WW2 no names being said!!!)
Lastley superimposeing Rhiona's head on nude womens bodies will leave you happy but will leave your girlfriends very angry
See ya Chris And Adam

One of the best final fantasy ever! |
| tonberry killer from sheboygan ,WI,USA says (30/May/2001): |
If you thought that final fantasy 7 or 9 was good this is even better because
1. anyone can summon in this game (something missing from ff9)
2. you can get ablitys from you gf( kind like in ff9 where you got it from armour)
3. they tottaly elimated armour which I like because you don't have to play around with the amour that has about the same stats
4.they look like normal people all the time (ff7 had it only in there movies and ff9 never had it
5. the game will want you to play it over and over because of all the good story line and the funny things you can do!

This is a very excellent game. |
| Fish from Minatare, USA says (21/May/2001): |
This game took me by surprise. I thought that when I saw the four disks that it was going to be a long boring game. But It proved me wrong. It was very exciting game, but sometimes feels that It is going to take forever. It took forever when you had to build up your magic or get 100 magics like ultima or metor. It was well worth the time it took to play it. I would recommend this game to anybody. I am trying to get my friend to lone me his other FFs so I can see if I can beat them in record time Like I did this one. Very excellent game and I can't wait till I can get to buy FF9 or I heard that FF10 is coming out. can't wait.

very time consuming but very entertaining |
| goetz from minnesota, usa says (17/Apr/2001): |
im not finished with it yet and ive never played the other ff games but already i think the game is awesome. i especially like the whole socery/magical theme and how you can change how and with what magnitude your characters function, skipping or missing one thing can effect the strength or usefulness of the characters. in other words your gameplay experience, charactes and strategies are definitely not going to be the same as anyone elses(friends).

GREAT GAME...AMAZING RPG......BUT...... |
| [XYZ] from Toronto, Canada says (31/Jan/2001): |
Let me start out by saying that FF8 is an excellent RPG but it in NO WAY compares to FF7. The only thing that FF8 has over FF7 is graphics and that means very little when deciding upon whether or not a game is worthy of your time. For its all really about gameplay and fun. Now let me just state, I think FF8 is an amazing RPG and a great game BUT in no possible way is it the greatest RPG EVER or for that matter the greatest Final Fantasy ever. The winner of both of those titles is undoubtably FF7. What bothered me with FF8? Well the battles honestly took FOREVER, all u rely on is the GF's and their sequences take years. This is especially true when you run into random battles and you want a quick kill. Beware though you'll be in certain meaningless areas for HOURS, it was starting to piss me off. Also the story and character development was suspect and didnt really capture me like FF7's did. I remember WANTING to play through 7 but i found myself in some ares forcing or labouring through 8. To put it plainly sometimes it bored me. Also, the card game was a mess throughout, thats my only comment about that area of the game.
But the game did have some great points. The graphics were awesome, CG's amazing and the junction and draw systems were innovative and different. And by no means am i trying to imply that this game is horrible. It is a spectacular RPG, worthy of a play. Its just not the greatest ever and it was bothering me when people here stated that because when compared to FF7, FF7 just towers over it.

It can't get any better! |
| Felicity from England, Norfolk says (21/Jan/2001): |
This game is so stunning, that you can't possibly put it down. It has jaw-dropping cinematics and the ending is amazing! The plot twists like a spineless snake and the characters are so realistic that I feel as if I know them! It is my most favourite game and the Junction system was a new standard of excellence! I can't wait for Final Fantasy IX th come out, I'm sure it will be just as spectacular
|
BEST OVER ALL EVEN 9 |
| Dave from Yucaipa,CA says (18/Jan/2001): |
This is the best game!! The graphics are the best and also the cinamatics. The ending is great but I'm not going to reveal anything now. I've heard a lot of bad things about the draw system but i thought it was an origional approach to magic. I was so disappointed with 9 (horrible game).
