This game kept me interested. |
| Delila from Columbus, Ohio says (3/Jan/2004): |
Final Fantasy VIII was a satisfying game. It had its ups and downs. First off, I've visited most sites and reveiwers were saying how much some battles got annoying. Well, I'd say this, those battles were for you to level up and become stronger to defeat the final boss. Also, others say the love story wasn't "real enough". This was a game, of course everything will be fast moving to keep you interested. The love story took sort of a fairy-tale approach with Squall and Rinoa. Which was good. It would be believable for me because its a game.
Also, many people said the game was too much of a Squall and Rinoa deal. Of course, if you look on the cover, their the main two on the cover. In the intro, I kind of new the young woman dressed in blue was on the young man dressed in leather. The other characters also had their major parts also. First, they were joined by fate. Second, they were with Squall throughout the whole game. Third, if it weren't for the others, the main character wouldn't have made it to the end.
Of course, that's their opinion, if you like the game, you like the game, if you don't, then you don't. Everyone has their own taste.
The graphics for the game was great. I enjoyed it very much. The makers of the game did a very good job at making the characters look real or believable. The characters personality was great also. Each had their own personality, making the game enjoyable.
The storyline was good also. It made me actually think that this world could be real. Every thing that happened in the game or more specifically, the major events in the game was back up, which is very important.
As for the battles in the game, they were good also. Of course it could get annoying, but that's normal.(I guess) What I liked about it was the way squaresoft set it up. Magic, weapons, Gfs, hit points, etc. All of this is kind of real. (except the Gfs and Magic) The experience points are just like this.
Think of a soldier, the more he battles, the more stronger and wiser he gets right? So, if the soldier battled new things, he'd get wiser. The soldier would be able to know how to deal with the enemy. I think others kind of got lost in that fact.
The enemies were thought up well. It explained how all of the living animals were born, great back up.
Over all, this game was good. I'd highly recommend this game for anyone. It's easy to follow and play. Very challenging. ^.^

Final Fantasy for all!!! |
| Steven Y. from Cabot, AR USA says (29/Jun/2004): |
Yes i have been checking out reviews on this website for awhile now and alot of what i seem to be finding is "final fantasy sucks" or ff8 is the best!!!" i am here now to tell you that no one final fantasy game is the best or was made better!! Squaresoft made all of these final fantasy games for a reason and that reason was to grab people's attention! to get everyone off of one game and to move on to the next generation! i will agree with alot of what is said on this website! final fantasy 8 has better graphics than ff7 but only b/c it was released at a later date! technology had evolved since ff7 and square just wanted to keep up with the world!! the one thing about all of you "game haters" that i do not like is your sence of "pride"!! you want everyone to think the same as you and to look from only one point of view! but then there are people like me who look from both ( or more ) standpoints!! when you all get it through your heads that no one really knows which game is best and that both final fantasy 7 and final fantasy 8 are great rpg's email me and i'll let you shout out what you think!!! i'd really like to get some more reviews here!!!
thank you for your time
steven y.

EXCELLENT! |
| Dave Rowntree from Burton on Trent says (22/Aug/2004): |
I loved this game it was my first final fantasy and it took a while to complete but i did it in the end. The trick to completing this game is to draw magic. With a healthy stock of magic and three characters on level 40 or over you will beat dis game with ease. Also for those who are stuck when you ace ultimecias final form at 1 point there will be 2 targets that is when you draw appocalypse of the 1 of them make sure you get a good stock of these whilst you can as the second ultimecia isnt around for long. Justkeep using recover on the people you have that have survived and keep casting appocalypse when you can. After beating the final boss just sit back and watch the final part. I have only 1 final fantasy to beat now and thats 7 anyone have any hints for me. If so send them me please. Final fantasy 8 proves that final fantasys rock like no other game and it also proves that comuter games can really make you involved and can teach us all lessons about real life in a virtual world. If i could explain how much thid game means to me you would give it a try because i like it that much. Also make sure you have plenty of meltdown magic because this really comes in handy. Make sure you use diablos o every boss because you will find it does tons of damage to half of them.

FFVIII is the best game I have ever played and I have played a lot of games. Sqaure should remodel it for PS2. The Graphics was great and I shouldnt see anyone complaining that it was to hard or that it was to long.FFVIII is the greatest and if people keep complaining than you are very weak and stupid

The good and the F**KIN STUPID |
| rosk from england says (14/Jan/2004): |
right this game is kool. I have read other peoples reviews and have discoverd that the battles were not liked because they were different. I personally believe that the battles being changed ahve been changed for the better because you can use your G/F ( also known as summons to all you ff7 fans )more than once. The graphics for the g/fs are stunning but they take to long which when your on a time limit is a problem because you dont have much time. There are loads of thing to find in this game and to get everything on it is almost impossible. i did it and it took me almost 5 month. There are cards in this game to collect which also make up a little sub game where you play random people in the streets and if you win you can win cards off them but in some parts of the ff world there are different rulez. Some regiens have different ways of playing which can make thing difficult so you have to master each of these rulez. The limit BReaks are stunning especially Squals limit break lion heart which if you have the rite level and meteria level can cause 9999 for every blow and there is about 15 blows so you can wipe out a boss in one limit break. There are loads of magic in this game and you can now draw out magic for baddies in random areas on the map for your self and your party members. There are other specials that your summons can learne to like giving you more strengh or risitance to a type of element. You can shop in the iddle of know where because one of your g/fs can get you anything or you can turn potions into magic ro magic into items. Its all stratagy based and you can do what you like when you like. The graphics to be honest arnt nothing to write home about but the thrill comes when your character moves around in the fmv. When your in a FMV sequance..its really a backdrop so the backgrounds are moving and look real and your player moves around and it looks amazing..it has to be seen to know what im talking about. There are many places you can viste some that arnt anything to do with the story and you can just fly, or go by train or boat there........you carnt ply to places until the 3rd disk after you have been to space. Also to this stopry is the other side....yo play as squal for most part of the story but in some places you play in the past as a mecinary called laguna and his pals. This all adds up to the final plot at the end where you fight the future soucer ultimicia.

WORTH THE MONEY!! |
| A gamer from San Francisco, CA USA says (16/Jul/2003): |
First i have to say i have NEVER played a final fantasy game before. my friend recommended it so i bought a bunch and the only one i really got into was ff8 because of the stunning graphics and memorable music.
i thought ff8 was as a lot of people said, "HIGHLY CUSTOMIZABLE". YOU control whether you run into a monster every second or not. Sure, you have to LEARN those abilities first before you can junction them using the menu screen controls, but once you have them, those abilities make a weak character's attributes SO MUCH MORE powerful. I was originally attracted largely by the sound and graphics but when i was hitting a dead end in the game not being able to beat the ultimecia, i started doing a search on the websites for walkthrough facts and started looking for them in the game, and i could see how rich and adaptable the game was. I agree that the game is not self-evident as to where you go next and how you go about beating hard monsters, but for anybody giving a bad review, you have to UNDERSTAND AND PRACTICE the power of how to use 1) the junction system, 2) individual character limit breaks, 3) the Triple Triad card playing game and 4) Ability points. If you understand those three aspects of the game, even a neophyte can beat the hardest monsters. At first, it was taking forever for me to beat monsters especially in the latter part of the game until I really started understanding the importance of limit breaks. ( Up until then, I had relied on GF's.) Also, I didn't understand the Triple Triad card game which will give you those special items to make you invincible, which you'll especially need to battle the hardest monsters. Then also, I didn't know there were GF's that could make your life a LOT easier if you went about trying to find them or battle for them. Go to a few places on the web and read other players' reviews about how to beat them. Also, i was using the SAME junctioning every time instead of changing my junctioning magics and junctioning abilities after learning the abilities instead of paying attention to the pop-up items after each battle saying, "GF... has learned XY ability". Also, most RPG games rely on you levelling up which doesn't do much good here since the opposing monsters level up also. So you have to understand that Ability Points matter more than levelling in order to get those special abilities.
You can control the speed of the game. Don't like that that the GF's take so long to summon and slow the game down? Stock up on potions and phoenix downs, self-inflict damage on your characters to a low HP (your characters' numbers will turn yellow), save more often, and get your LIMIT BREAKS ready to hit your enemies fast and hard. Having a hard time finding that rare item to upgrade your weapon? Maybe you can get them through cards. Settle yourself down to playing a couple hundred card games and manipulate the card rules in each region. It's a nice slow but patient way of going from one battle to the next. There were a lot of either side quests like encountering Pupu the alien, Shumi Village sidequest, the Card games, acquiring Quistis' blue magic items, the Laguna side story (which affects the main story) that I never got bored from the game. I think I have played it over a dozen times already! Just its replay value is worth the money!!

WHEN WILL YOU PEOPLE LEARN THAT FF8 IS NOT A PIECE OF S***!!!!!!!!!! |
| rob from christchurch dorset england says (20/Jan/2004): |
what is wrong with you people! I mean hello! I am so fed up of people bad mouthing ff8!. I mean we've got Sephiroth2008 from Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA saying that cloud could kick squalls ass (yeah right), Ser Dan of Ramelot from Brisbane, Australia saying that the story line and value is 0,Bahamut ZERO from Scarbrough Canada saying it's a waste of money and ff8 fans arn't true gamers and then there's Cloud Strife from Toronto Canada saying every thing about it is lame! I mean how thick can U get. ff8 is all about stratagy and their all just saying it's rubish because they're are so bad at gaming they can't figure out how to use each characters battle section ther're more useful in (e.g selfie, magic and healing)to they're advantage that they just start to complain and whine about other things like the graphics and juctioning being bad so they dont think they're rubbish.I mean look at the graphics sure they're not amazing but they're bloody good considering this is a ps1 game and looking at what year it was made in. junctioning sure its hard to get use to but once you know how to use it it is very helpful. the limit breaks and weapons are awsome and those of u that think ff7 is better than ff8 then ur not true gamersand deserve to be striped of your console for wasting time on it because FF8 F**K**G WELL KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! those who agree with me please email me and those who don't can as well and u can tell me ur problem with it and this is just for u Cloud Strife from Toronto Canada hope u hate it:

Face the facts, we all love the Final Fantasy series and they will be around for a while but they are usually pretty long. They can be even longer when you reach a boss that takes FOREVER to defeat. Well, get the information you need to defeat the bosses with the official strategy guide! It has complete lists of items such as Guardian Forces, Triple Triad cards, and information on how to access and successfully complete mini-games and strategies for the Triple Triad game. The guide also contents character art directly from Squaresoft as well as secrets you wont find anywhere else so you should definately check it out.

DRAW SYSTEM RULES! |
| The Jaded One from Canada says (10/Jun/2002): |
This is the most customizable game out there. whether you are smart and get the hang of it, and really, really like it, or you are to stupid to understand the draw system and just say you don't like it to make yourself look like you really have an opinion. The characters are so rich, anyone can summon a gf anytime, and the characters can customize themselves like never before! You can make anyone a magic user, and then make the person with the weakest weapon double the damage of te gy with the best. It's all there in the junction system. This game's plot blows away all the other ff's, including ten! I can't convey what a great game this is, RPG gamerz, if you haven't played this yet, and really beat it, (not just the foinal boss, but conquered it) you don't know what a good rpg is!

One Hell of a Game! |
| Freakster from minneapolis, USA says (19/Jun/2002): |
This is my favorite game I own, out of all my games(in all). The graphics are the best I've ever seen in any playstation game(In any game for that matter). After I played FF8 for the first time, the songs got stuck in my head. The gameplay was the best, though. It wasn't a game that was just about killing, it had a story behind it, and the roll playing made it even more interesting. Anyone reading this should definitely consider purchasing this game, if you haven't already.
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 8/10
The game itself: 10/10

Love Story weigh much for ff8 |
| Hidemirrorman from China says (7/Mar/2003): |
I bought FF8 a very long long time ago (I feel so) and I have just finished it yesterday. The main reason for this is that I have given up it after I started to play it for an hour. I gave it up just because I dont like the junction system and most of all, the use of GF. Actually I can accept the junction system but the junction of GF discouraged me. I think the usage of GF was too much and I disliked it! I wanna kill enemies with a sword and magic and not a GF! However, FF8 battle requires too much use of GFs because they are much more powerful than using weapons, the situation changes only when the game is about to finish! The junction system also takes up you time to 'handle' which adds unnecessary difficulties to the game. The 2nd point why I gave it up was that I dont like the 'story' line at the start, actually FF8 carrys no story at the beginning and the sense of 'no aim' makes me dislike it. The 3rd point is that I dont like the card games and the minigames, there is no special reason, I just dont like it. I like killing enemies but dont wanna play cards. (Actually you can finish the game without playing any card games or another minigame) I just deem such card games as a waste of time. As I am not so busy for the past 3 mths, I started to play FF8 again, I try not to quit so early and eventually I finished it though I still dislike the over useage of GF. I think it is the 'character' of Squall which attracts me to play FF8 again. I think we have more or less the same character, and playing FF8 just like watching me in the game, it's funny. As the title stated above, the love story weigh much for FF8 and I give it eight stars coz' it's very touching. But I'm not talking about the love between Squall and Rinoa, it's Laguna and Raine! It's really very touching and I had to admit that I have tears in my eyes when watching the ending scene of Laguna. (I havent fall in love before, the reason is more or less the same as Laguna.....) I think I'm the combination of Squall of Laguna.......I mean the character...........FF series not only provide you with just a game, but the story which attracts you and the characters make you substitue yourself into the game sometimes, what do you see? (my english isnt good enough,I may not be able to express my feelings clearly, pls forgive me)

| A gamer from Pittsburgh, PA says (19/Mar/2003): |
The battle system and junction system were really cool, really unique but some parts in the story were kinda corny. Like when they suddenly realize thier all from the same orphanage.I also wish they didn't make Griever use Shockwave Pulsar.I thought they could have made it a little longer like FF7. However I do have some good parts too. I like the fact that they made the people look like actual adults, unlike FF9 in which they looked like 10 yr olds. I liked the GFs. They made them take a whole new picture by adding these abilities. It was like FF6 because you would equip espers and learn magic but not abilities. The graphics and music were totaly cool. The ending was alright, it messes with your mind. I also though Rinoa and Quistis were hoooooootttttttt. Sorry Selphie. I loved the way they made Limit breaks. The best would be duel or renzokuken. I think slot would be a distant third. So uh anyway overall it was a great game.

best playstation game i've ever played |
| A gamer from nameless, USA says (11/Aug/2003): |
this game is the best ive played and the graphics are realy good for a playstation game and i was in band and i realy liked the music it always got me pumped right by the end of a mission or something like that. this game is realy long and is action packed the junction system is probably the most confusing thing about the game but after a couple of hours playing the game you start to understand it the gf's are my favorite part of the game and it is realy cool that you can chose them to learn stuff like boost and the gf movies are realy cool i liked the brothers gf movie because it was funny how they played paper rock scissors. the side quests of the game are realy fun like the chocobos and the card queen side quests over all i think the game is unserpassed by all other final fantasies except final fantasy 10.

A BRILLIANT GAME! IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO BEAT DIS! |
| Dave Rowntree from Birmingham says (7/Jul/2004): |
This game is amazing it was my first final fantasy and since this i have been a dedicated fan. I'm not sayin its better than final fantasy 7 or 9 because they are just as good. The story line to this game is unique and imaginative I LOVE IT! The characters are really detailed in characteristics especially squall he has to be the greatest character in gaming history. I urge anyone who hasn't tried a final fantasy to play this game. Anyone who was disappointed isn't facing the facts that this is a well built game. Its practically flawless just like the other final fantasys, the people at squaresoft are all geniuses. I say that everyone on this page should give respect top the guys because if your on this page you have been moved by a final fantasy. Anyway back to the game the friendship between the main characters is well progressed as the game goes on. Sorry but no one will beat this game and the only people who will equal it are squaresoft. It gave me some fond memories and the love between squall and rinoa still touches me after 5 years of first playing the game. Also i will say if you like final fantasy 7,8 or 9 give 10 and 10-2 a try because these are also proof that final fantasy rocks more than any other game.
|
Not Squaresoft's best but it still rocks! |
| no_angel from Manila, Philippines says (29/Nov/2004): |
I finished FF8 3 times already and I although I think FF8 is not exactly the best rpg ever.. seriously, calling it crap is just plain stupid and pompous! The game's superb graphics alone is something to rave about. It was really a HUGE leap from FF7. The FMV's were simply breathtaking to behold and the GF summons were spectacular. Its remarkable that the characters were well-developed both appearance and personality wise that they could pass on for real people (not to mention the really cool weapons!). The introduction of the junction system and draw magic is also a good wrinkle to the battle system. Those who hate the game for the junction system because its "confusing" are either too impatient to learn (Patience is a virtue of RPG gamers... duh?) or just plain too weak-minded. The wide variety of items, magic, abilities, GFs and limit breaks (Squall's Lionheart was amazing) available in FF8 allows the player to customize characters to adapt to his/her own unique battle strategy . Audiowise, it's one of the best on the PS1 and the soundtracks were better than what you'd expect from a game. This is not to say the game is perfect, of course.. The loading time for each frame was irritating.. I think the story suffers from overplayed melodrama and it really drags on some parts. The "love plot" could've been treated better. Squaresoft's bid for a unique story on FF8 is simply a double-edge gunblade. Some will really like it (my sister does..) while some will loathe and curse Squaresoft for it. Also I agree on one reviewer that the final boss was relatively easy (I defeated her in just 2 tries) In fact, I had a harder time beating the omega weapon. But all in all it was still a great game.. I've been a rpg gamer since I was 10 and played almost all of the FF games. Although it did not push the "gaming" envelope like its predecessor, (I believe FF7 totally redefined RPG's forever) with awesome graphics, fun mini-games and unique battle system, it still delivers the goods. FF8 may not be the best in the series but nonetheless still a worthy part of the Final Fantasy franchise.

FF8 F***ING FANTASTIC! |
| rob from Bournemouth England says (21/Nov/2003): |
from my obviosly title you've probably figured out this is the best game i've ever played and probably think that i think this is the best game in the world. i think it is so good I ended up playing it for 38 hours straight! i think it is so cool for these reasons:
amzing graphics (for a ps1 game)
great junction system
amazing gf's
fantastic weapons (espicialy the lion heart)
great limit breaks
interesting characters
and of corse a great story line!
i think it is completely original because have u heard any thing like a student training to be a mercenary ending up fighting a sorceress and saving the world? cause i sure havn't. the main boss opennent's are really hard but thats what makes it interesting and challenging imean if all the bosses were easy we'd think it was a really boring game instead of the great game it really is. i think the hardesd opponent is not ultimecia or ultimate weapon, i think its omega weapon. i had all ,y people at level 100, had all their best weapons, had all the gf's, all junctions to each of them and i think ihad every kind of magic juntioned and he still manged to beat me with just a amazing two hits! TWO HITS! which has never been done to me before so if you have any pointers i would really apreiciate it. my favoriite character is squall because he's a bit like me a quiet person who keeps to him self and trys not to show others his true feelings. my favorite limit break is the lion heart it looks so cool, kicks ass and does a hell of a lot of damage. i want to rap this review up by saying ff8 rules! e-mail me and give me your reviews.
