Mortal Kombat Trilogy - The N64 version kinda sucks |
| MK fan from Maryland, USA says (12/Oct/2003): |
I'd have to give the graphics a 10 because they look just like the arcade version. The sound is awesome (10), although some sounds are unrealistic, but that's a design problem. It lasts a pretty long time, but only if you have human players to play with. The CPU cheats, especially in the N64 version. The CPU is cheap, because it isn't limited like a human player is. Originality is a 10, because this is the fighting game that started it all. Value is a 7, because this is a great game to own when you have people to play with. Unlike one of the other reviewers, MKT does have every character. It doesn't have Reiko or Tanya because they are from MK4 and MK4 can't be part of the trilogy, because it is the fourth (duh!). I thought everyone would understand what the title 'Mortal Kombat Trilogy' would mean, but even one of my friends asked, "Is it MK3 Trilogy, or MK Trilogy?" And I was thinking, "Why the heck would it be MK3 Trilogy?"
Anyway, lifespan is a 7 or 8 depending on how long you can stand the design flaws. I once overheard a conversation about video games during the time when high schoolers were pretending they didn't like video games anymore because they wanted to seem "cool" (half of them probably sucked). Well, one of them said, "The time I stopped playing video games was when you had to press seven buttons to do the move." Well, that's basically one of the two major problems with the klassic MK games. The game itself wasn't very hard, so they required you to press more buttons to do your moves, made you press buttons like doing a special move when you could just uppercut someone in MK1 (The Pit as opposed to the Deadpool), and they made stupid obstacles in the way of the cooler moves like Friendships. At least in Killer Instinct, you get auto-doubles and auto-triples to make combos easier to do, and one special move for the ultra combo, but you have to press 13 buttons do to brutalities sometimes, and all of the moves were manually done. Also, the characters returning when MK3 was updated to UMK3 had sucky kombos with only 4 hits, and like half of them were juggle kombos. And the damage system was messed up for the kombos from the first version. The other thing that made the old school MK games suck was that fighting in general is that the "flow" is not natural. If you wanted to parry/counter-attack, you had to know which special move or normal move to do, which one to do when your opponent is in each location, and time all of them, not to mention that you had to press a sequence of buttons to do each move. In games like Virtua Fighter 3 and 4, fighting was simple, natural, and intuitive, but not button-mashing. Kombos were so easy to learn that you'd be doing them many times before you realized that was your character's kombo. VF3 and 4 were a bit TOO easy for my tastes, but I was so glad to be far away from the lack of tactics while mindlessly mashing buttons, and glad to take a much deserved break (about 6 years later!) from doing all of these complicated button combinations that don't really require skill so much as patience. I had my hopes up for MK4, not only because it was the first video game to use texture mapping and millions of polygons, but because I thought they would fix the design issues with the Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Mortal Kombat 4 was even worse. Every character had the same two kombos. The only good kombos were lackluster juggle kombos, and by that time, the design of the 0fighting engine was so neglected that they had to add the feature of "Maximum Damage" because some kombos were just TOO good. Yes, the juggle kombos were good, but they're blah compared to normal kombos. The worst thing about MK4, however, was that there were FAR less features than in MKT. For example, whatever happened to the kooler kombat kodes like fast uppercut recovery? I have my hopes up for MK: Deadly Alliance, because I'm hoping that it will fix all of those issues. So, I'd say fun factor is about a 6, because I don't always have the patience to play the klassic MK games. The unnatural flow of the klassic MK games is the main reason that I got beat down 50, sometimes 100 times in a row by one of my friends: I just didn't have the patience to practice long hours learning which moves can counter-attack which move and being able to do the button combinations like my favorite characters practiced real martial arts and then having the patience to wait for my friend or the CPU to attack. When I played Virtua Fighter 4, I was already good. I'm going to get my friend back for whooping me all those times in MK:DA.

| A gamer from Rochester NY says (31/Aug/2003): |
This was a great game overall but there were a couple bad things about the game.First of all when you're playing mortal kombat trilogy on your playstation 2 the game seems to freeze alot.PS2 was meant and designed to play PS1 games but this game seems to freeze more often than the others. For example when you lose a match and the continue? screen shows up and you let the countdown go down to zero when its gameover and you dont want to continue no more then the game seems to freeze. Also when you're playing as Shang Tsung and you morph sometimes it freezes to.I find shang tsung completly useless because everytime you morph in a different fighter it loads and you have to wait and it loads again when you return back to normal. When you defeat shao kahn and you want to choose your treasure the screen turns black and you have to reset the machine. When I played MK Trilogy I enabled the one button fatality and at the end of round 2 when it says finish him I use my fatality and then after that the game freezes and I have to keep reseting it.I wondered what the problem was until I read my ps2/ps1 guide book and i went to games and looked up MK Trilogy. It says Mk Trilogy is one of those games that sony says isnt 100 Percent compatible with ps2.It'll work but it will lock up and freeze often making you reset the machine alot.No permanent damage but it does get really annyoing.Let me mention the good things about this game.Mk Trilogy has 32 playable characters right when you turn on the system plus it has 5 hidden characters. You can even play as goro, kintaro, motaro, shao kahn, unmasked subzero (n64 doesnt have unmasked subzero)and human smoke(in n64 you have to use a cheat to unlock him but the ps1 version hes already on the fighter selection screen)plus many more. One button fatality cheat is really cool so you dont have to waste time practing on how to do it.Also there is a one button animality, one button friendships, one button brutalities, one button babalities and one button stage fatalities. You can also play as classic mk1 characters like kano or raiden and mk2 versions are jax and jung lao.Lots of bloos and "ATALITIES" make this game exciting.I suggest you dont play thisd game on ps2 but play it on your ps1 so it wont freeze at all.

FAST PACED HARDCORE GAMEPLAY |
| Edward Tredo from Gand Island, New York, USA says (13/Aug/2003): |
I bought this game for 10 dollars at media play and i came home and played it right away. This game was hard to learn but it became interesting learning the new moves and combos on my own. So after two days of being relentlessly clueless i went to cheatcodes.com and got some moves and fatalities. Then the game became even more interesting exploring my favorite characters and strategies. This game is fun to play when your stoned because you dont think about what your doing you just do it. I also recommend GTA:Vice City(when your stoned)...I rated this game a 7 out of 10 because it constantly freezes on my PS2, the animalities totally suck, i still cant figure out when im at the story screen, and there is no main menu like the other mortal kombats. It reminds me of a half-assed arcade version of a pretty decent game. Otherwise, i play it when im bored...

A good game, but it lacked originality |
| Rich from Riverside RI USA says (27/Aug/2003): |
I wish they had a game that had the original game as well as the two sequels it instead of throwing them all into one package. It is like buying Mortal Kombat 3 all over again. But this one allows you to play as Goro, Kintaro, Shao Kahn, and other bosses. That was unheard of before this title came out. I liked the original pit scene which was never used on a version of the original game! I had a problem with some of the fatalities. I thought they took a step backwards with them. Some were
very silly and boring. I didn't like the brutality moves that would cause the victim to explode. However, It was good game with a good challenge to it. I give it Eight stars!

Best MK ever. |
| NosDemonic from New Zealand says (20/Nov/2001): |
I say this because it is, its got every character from every Mortal Kombat game ever, even the old characters from MK1 (secret characters) you can even play as all the bosses, the only character it doesnt have is chameleon from MK3, really a game for MK nuts like me though as it takes a long time to get good at timing and knowing the moves for every character etc... well worth the money now that its gone platinum, Skrew Street fighter, MK is the way to go :)

The Mortal Kombat Ever |
| Jamal Hawkins from Grosse Tete Louisiana USA says (17/Oct/2003): |
I think MK Trilogy is the game ever made for PS and PS2. It has every character on there (but not including the MK4 and Deadly Alliance players). The fatalities, brutalities, animalalities, babyalities and friendship moves are very easy. But one problem, I don't have the game anymore,It was for my neighbor, but he moved away. If anyone have that game please let me borrow it.But anyway I don't think there is anything wrong with the as for as it being boring.

Mk trilogy Rocks!!!! |
| Dakota Brown from Onsted, Michigan, USA says (28/Sep/2003): |
I looooove mortal kombat trilogy. It has almost every single MK charecter. It has Goro, Shao Khan, And Motaro....nice. I think the Fatalities, Brutalitys, frienships, babaylities, and animalities are awesome! The only thing is it doesn't have Reiko, Shinnok, or Tanya on it...and it freezes on Ps2. Too bad the graphics aren't as good as Dreamcast's mortal kombat gold, but anyway, This is definently the one of the best MK games ever!
