Third-Best Ain't Bad - Considering the Competition, That Is! | Arend Hart from Michigan says (11/Apr/2002): | This is by far the third-best rally simulation for the PSone. I hope I'm not coming across coldhearted by saying that. I've loved this game since the day it came out. And even now, years later, I continue to hold it in high regard. Hell, it even drove me to write my first review ever, a reader review that was featured on GameSpot (called Videogames.Com at the time) before their format change deleted it.
The only problems I had with the game were in regard to the length of each stint, which were quite short (timing in at under a minute and a half). Other than that, the game had it all...the best control, graphics, licenses, options, etc... It set the bar for rally games. But it wasn't too long after that the bar was raised. Raised by the fine folks at Codemasters, that is, with their release of Colin McRae Rally (CMR), and its sequel Colin McRae 2.0 (CMR2.0).
Both of the CMR games are better than V-Rally 2, in my opinion. But, I do tend to rate games on their realism, and the CMR series prides itself on realism, whereas V-Rally 2 was more on the fun side.
As a matter of fact, the first CMR was so realistic in its design, that it only included single-car on course stages as are seen in real life (except for Rallycross, never do more cars than one start at the same time from the same point in rally racing). The result was that, while physically accurate, some people found the first CMR a bit too boring. There was some grumbling about the boredom factor with CMR, so when CMR2.0 released, it included an Arcade mode to put you up against AI controlled competitors. Hence, the world was introduced to the best rally simulation ever to grace the PSone.
V-Rally 2 is an awesome game, period. It's a great pick-‘em-up rally racer with all the trimmings to make it a classic. But you can't ignore the fact that there are two other rally games available, both of which are simply amazing, and as a result they outshine this title and take my seal of approval.
Pick it up if you see it cheap. You'll have a good time. But if you've got a copy of CMR (especially CMR2.0) in one hand and a copy of V-Rally 2 in the other, and you have to make a decision, I'd have to recommend CMR.
| Suprising! | | Peter from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada says (9/Sep/2005): | I bought this game pre-played from a video rental store and when I got it home I was plesantly suprised at this game. Although It's realism doesn't match up as much as such titles as Gran turismo 2, The graphics were almost a not-so-good PS2 Game!! the shiny polished look of the cars really won me over as well as the line up of cars to choose from including the classics. Now although this game is a few years old it is a perfect game for those who aren't as priviledged enough to have a PS2, etc. this is a fun game that I suggest for both serious rally fans and those who don't even know what a rally is. The only flaw I found in this game was the fact that they included head to head arcade and V-rally Trophy modes which I didn't like so much but I guess they put it in to train you for racing your friends in Multiplayer mode or something.
Graphics 10/10
Sound 9/10
controls/realism 8/10
fun factor 10/10
overall 9/10
| Feel the spee.. | | Tom E. Hansen from Eidsvoll, Norway says (22/Dec/2000): | V-rally 2 is one of the best racing games on the psx I've ever played. When i first got, i could sit up for hours at night 'n just play, the speed of the game is awsome, much better than v-rally 1. The originality of the game is, well i guess ok, not so much new, but things that are new are really good, like the track editor..kix ass!
