Disapointing640

Jonathan from Lansing, Michigan says (21/Nov/2000):
I went into this game with high hopes. I generally like strategy games like this. However, with Railroad Tycoon II, I found myself having to force myself to keep playing it. Sure, I had fun laying track, buying engines, and setting up trains. But, the controls just ruined it for me.

I was playing using my dual-shock controller and everything was just counter-intuitive. The left analog stick controlled the “mouse” pointer; the right one scrolled the map. R1 and R2 moved up and down menu selections. That is about it for easily definable controls. The digital buttons always seemed to do different things. I can’t count how many times, I retired a train while trying to quit out of menu because some option was highlighted when I pushed a button that would cancel on other menus but now approved the highlighted choice. And, to top it off, once you do something like that there is no undo feature. While playing the tutorial after first renting this game, I somehow manage to resign as CEO of my company and was forced to start over.

Graphics were ok, Sound was ok, but the controls just ruined it for me. If you can get past the controls, this game has a lot of potential and the possibility of many hours of game play. My suggestion: rent this game. If you can stand the controls, go ahead and buy it, there is plenty of game time here.

Thanks to RedOctane (www.RedOctane.com) for providing this game!

Play without prejudice !238

Joni Ilmasti from Turku, Finland says (29/Aug/2000):
If there is someone who don't know the idea of this game, let me explain it briefly. Ok, in the beginning you have nothing but money and a land to build on. Lay railroad tracks and place the stations and buy a train or two. Then choose the cars for them to transport goods(grain, oil, food, mail, passengers...etc). Choose routes and stops. You have all the power in your company.
You can buy and sell stocks. There is many ways of making your company profitable.

Graphics are actually quite reasonable but of course if you compare them to PC-version then you are playing with wrong machine. Sprite based graphics may look a bit dated but the game is so complex and big that there is no choice but to take away from some department.

Sounds are also quite minimalistic, but there are enough effects to make sense of what's happening. In my opinion, sounds and effects are not so important in a game of this type.

Interface may feel a bit difficult, especially for younger players, but I think that there are not many young players in PSX owners that are looking for this type of game. Still I think that the interface and gameplay is actually quite flexible after reading the manual and exploring the controls and other stuff.

In Railroad Tycoon 2 you can choose from CAMPAIGN, SCENARIOS or TUTORIAL and for those of you that are new to this kind of genre(games like Simcity, Rollercoaster tycoon etc.) the tutorial may be the best place to start. CAMPAIGN is a set of missions / scenarios linked together and SCENARIOS mode is more like a 1 mission per game. One thing that annoyed me is that you can't save game in Scenario-mode at all and in gampaign-mode you can save game between the missions only. When the average playing time can be like 2-3 hours at least, I think the developers of this game could have included a bit more user-friedly way to save your progress.

There is nothing original in this game because it is a remake of a classic pc-game Railroad Tycoon, but when compared to other playstation games there is so much to rave about. Basically there is no end in this game so some people might feel that there is no purpose for trying to make your company prosper but anyone who has ever enjoyed playing with trains when child, this is a perfect game, especially for those quiet sundays when there is time and nothing on tv. This is game for patient and mature gamers.

QUALITY!44760

'Clynestein' from Glasgow, Scotland says (28/May/2005):
I am addicted to RRT2. It is one of the best PS1 games around. The only part I don't like is that you can't change the date in New Scenario, Britain. I am a great fan of the Australian campaigns. It would be better if they had more 'real life' trains, rather than made up ones, or American ones. But, to cap it all, I would say it is great and very addictive.

steven bowcott from birminham england says (3/Apr/2003):
this game is cool I brought it for a mate but he hated it so i thought id have a try and the hours have flown by I love how you are allowed to lay track where you want and the fact that even though you complete your goals you can choose to play on just to see how your company would do buy it now
