xenosaga is hot, but xenogears is on FIRE!! |
| Amy from N.Prov RI! says (26/Sep/2003): |
I think this game is the best game i have ever played. But sadly, my brother gave the game to one of his friends...:( too bad. i thought the ending was great! the only thing i hated about this game was the super hard boss guys that were there... or it could be that my level was really low. this game deserves 10 satrs. i also like how they took this game from an actual anime well some times rpgs are. but really this is the BEST squaresoft game ever (compared to the final fantasy series) but yet, some people hate this game, i can not see how you can hate this game... that is whicked impossible! i guess my brother did not like the game too much, cause he gave it away... he's kinda dumb. it took me quite a while to beat this game untill i got game shark codes for it, then it was so easy, boss guys dead with one death blow... ahh i miss that. oh and the videos were really cool too, like when Fei is id in Solaris and his gear reacts to him being in in the Yggs. I will always love this game, but now that i have ps2 i might try Xenosaga, well now that i think about it, i don't really want to

Heard? |
| Errol Docena from NO Hollywood, CA, USA says (28/Mar/2002): |
Some people have never heard about it. And some who have, were a little late! This game came out some months before the regular gamer found out, maybe even a year back! And this put down the ratings when they first played it. The storyline is good, although I'm not such a great fan of these type of storylines. Battle system is good. Battle move learning system is great, but not protected by people who look them up in the internet. Battle moves are awesome! Great! Especially with robots! Crush them little humans on the floor! Or use the inner-body's strength and blast them! Walking around with robots is unique, you can get inside a robot or go outside (You'd rather stay inside, you wouldn't want to fight giant robots as a human). Gameplay is good. The rating on mine would be an 8 if I judged it on my own feelings, but I'm judging it on how it is! The majority thinks the storyline is awesome, the majority thinks the gameplay is great, and the majority thinks everything is peachy-keechy! But I am the odd-ball, I see how it is, I thought FF7 was -okay-. The systems on chocobos were pretty good. I'm just angry how some people know the Final Fantasies only by first playing FF7. I judge this game on how it is suppose to be to control the rage of the majority. I give it a 10, I suggest you buy it, I know YOU'LL like it.

the best of all best |
| bobby marion from bakersfield, california, usa says (29/Jun/2002): |
The cool thing about this game is that once you beat it you should play again it never gets boring. I like this game because the graphics are good and the music is awwsome. How you can use a gear of fight as a human is pretty cool. I recommend this game to people who loves rpg games or who wants to play them. This is the most fun game I have ever played. If you can try to find it because they dont make them.

Awsome storyline, good graphics, fun battle system, giant robots?!?! |
| Dabunzaee says (19/Oct/2002): |
This is one of the most orignal games from square i have ever seen. one of the reasons are the graphics i dont know why but they made the enviroments of this game more interactive such as camera rotation and such. the battle system is awsome squares now using combo systems i hope they keep this idea cause its pretty damn cool. and the fmvs are in traditional japanese anime and thats pretty cool. the lenght of gameplay is amazing this is easily one of squares longest games. you should buy it if you havent already!

THE BEST HISTORY NEVER WROTE FOR A VIDEO GAME. |
| Simon "Minos" Jara. from Heredia, Costa Rica. says (1/Nov/2002): |
I have played a lot of RPG but anyone of then is like this. The grapics are horribles however the history line is the BEST never wrote (the writer should have done an Anime in side of a video game), the felings of the characters, the way in that the succes are told, the points that are touched, ALL is PERFECT (I alwais have told that this game is the updated version of the Anime EVANGELION)
The game play isn't the best but it's great too. If you like the longs video games I tell you that this have more than 50 hours of game time whitin trainign, so you can lost close of 65 hours in this World of aventures looking for: One reason for fight or One place for protec. However you MUST be prepared for this history, don't think that is sometingh easy of understand (I had pased this game 2 times and y haven't understod it complet yet) and you can be psicologicali afected (that hapened to me, but later of some seasson with te Psicologist y were right).
If you haven't played this game and you called yourself a videogamer you aren't NOTHING more than a LIAR.

Great game but not quite a classic |
| Erik Loepp from Washington, Tacoma, Usa says (30/Nov/2002): |
VERY complex story line. Unique battle system, the gear idea and fighting style is great. LOTS of suprises. not to many random battles. Cool clips. Decent characters, some where cool but some where just dumb... chuchu... seems perfect, but of course it has its flaws there is a little to much talking i was about to cry at one point, and there is not enough secrets, i think FF7 spoiled me with all there secrets and side quests. and i dont think alot of people care about this but in my opinion it doesnt have good replay value i wouldnt beable to handle the talking on disk 2 again that still gives me nightmares. and lastly the difficulty... its mostly not that hard, once in a while you'll run into a really hard part... i can think of about 4 (shakan,Amphysvena & opiomorph, & the Anima relic puzzles) and then Deus can be tough depending on what gear parts you have equipted, if your not using a walk through our something he'll probably kill ya a few times... but other wise its a great game and i recomend it.

Too Good To Be True |
| Richard from Pensacola FL USA says (1/Apr/2003): |
This is the BEST RPG ever. This game is Far Better than Xenosaga, but I dont blame them. The calibur of Xenogears will never be done again, perfection only happens once. This game has it all, religion, greed, the thirst for power, deception, and love. Fei must be the deepest chracter in RPG history. Citan turns out to be more than just a friend. I mean this game is just too good to be true. The music is great. All the text has a point. Ramus is the comic relief, you start to feel sorry for him. There is just too much I love about this game. I will never forget it. In fact I this game ruined all other RPGs for me, none of them are the same after playing Xenosaga, To all who play this game for the first time be prepared for the game of your life.

Rare |
| A gamer says (29/Nov/2003): |
I'm not entirely sure but for those who want to know I believe squaresoft is selling newer copies on their site.
So if you're finding it hard to find (took me a solid 8 months to find one in stores) try looking there.
This game, whew what do I say?
When this game first came out I had no idea, i'd been to busy busting up final fantasy 7, little did I know there was a clone title right next to it, squaresoft truly does bring surprise to us all. You thought FF7 was a good political thriller? Sit back and shut up cus all of you final fantasy fanboys aint got nothing on this.
There have been rave's that this game is far from complete, but take a look at ff7 it IS complete and it STILL can't compare, and I LOVE FF7.
Despite it's rating this game isn't for the thirteen year old wanna be Rpg Guru, it's difficulty is simplistic, it can be beaten by pretty much...EVERYONE, with a few rough spots here and there.
Which brings me to my point, the xeno name draws heavily upon biblical name, places, even stories. I've always respected this game, mainly for the fact that it gave us something other than save the world, it's more like save this man's sanity.
This game WILL deliver, of that I promise you, and there WILL be rought spots to get by, but with patience you can easily watch this thrilling story.
However, here's the catch, the reason this isn't for the young gamer is mainly for the fact that the story is COMPLEX, I played this roughly a few months after it came out and I had to play through it several times to understand it.
If you're the kind of gamer that wants to know EVERYTHING about a game expect to be picking up a dictionary and various bible's.

Stand Tall and Shake the Heavens? I sure did! |
| Brycen Johnson from St.Joseph,Missouri,USA says (1/Jun/2002): |
Stand tall and shake the Heavens? When I first read that phrase my mind came to a complete blank... What could this game be about? Can it possibly be good?
At this time in the history of Squaresoft, Square had become a bit shallow as of late.Games such as Parasite Eve, and Brave Fencer Musashi were good games and all but didn't quite live up to the RPG legacy that Square has been known for.
When I was 25 hours into the game , I knew that this was what I had been waiting for (In this game 25 hours really isn't that far...) As soon as I had gotten into the story , I soon began noticing that I would think about the topics set forth in the game.In the car, on the school bus, even at restaurants at what was supposed to be a family gathering.I just couldn't get my mind off of it! Unfortunately this game sucked away my social life for about a week and a half.Fortunately I got the chance to dive deeper into the already deep story tackling topics such as : drugs, sex, religion , and other psychological issues. The Battle system in Xenogears is very innovative as well as fun. When a battle (unfortunately random) begins the screen shatters into your battle menu. When pressing the command of attack you are given three choices on how to attack. Triangle ,gives you a low attack while square and x, are medium and high attacks.Chaining these commands together envokes highly destructive attack chains known as " Deathblows".The combat added a bit of depth from the game but I also found it to be a bit repetitive, but only when gaining levels. Another unique combat feature is the option to fight in giant Mecha, or "gears".Gears operate basically the same way with the addition of the triangle, square ,and X buttons draining certain amounts of fuel. One downside that I dreaded was that once one of your Gears are down , you have no hope of getting it back up. The music in this masterpiece is nothing short of breathtaking.
Every song seems to fit the mood perfectly and in my opinion strengthens it.A certain tune set for a religious organization really touched me, and every time the song comes on I get that warm, and fuzzy feeling inside. This game was extremely fun for me , but not necessarily for the gameplay. The story was what kept me interested, but unfortunately the gameplay really isn't anything entirely new to the RPG genre. Unfortunately, some will not like this game due to it's LONG quest or it's story.Something that I will worn the NON-Rpg player is that you may be turned off by the amount of text ( the second disc is basically an interactive book, not to say that that's a bad thing) The bottom line is that you need to at LEAST rent this game and play through it a ways.More than likely the story will touch you deeply and motivate you to possibly buy this game and experience it from beginning to end.

The best anime type game you can play. |
| Caleb Rees says (2/Jan/2003): |
My third favorite game. I like anime's and video games so this game is a dream come true to me. The story line is great. The graphics are the best. The characters really cool. It maybe only two discs but the story line is 60 hours long or maybe longer and i like that. The robots on this game are awesome. If you bought Xenogears i hoped you liked it just as much as i did.

Its the sweetest anime styled rpg game ever to hit PSX |
| A gamer says (20/Jul/2003): |
Ive played alot of rpg's but Xenogears is one of my favorite. I first played it as a demo from Parasite Eve and when i cleared the demo i was positive that i was gonna buy the real thing. In time i did buy it and i bought it in 1998(thats the year it came out). When i beat the game in 2001 i was blown away from how awesome it was. Its a very long game with a long story line to go through but the story line is breath taking so the 60 hours of story line was more than worth it. The Giant Robots you control are the bomb and are cool looking and every character is unique and special. The graphics aren't too shabby but squaresoft could've done better. The reason i gave this game an 8 is because the end plot was dumb and the end boss isn't real cool. Other than that this game totaly worth the effort to buy if you ever have a chance.

A Gift From SquareSoft |
| Somebody from Minnesota, USA says (30/Oct/2003): |
Playing this game was the best thing that happened to me. I could almost feel as if I was living in the world of Xenogears. The storyline was out of the ordinary, how they talked about the beginning and the end. This is one game that somebody really took time on making.
|
"I want to know what I am!" Your a darn good game that is what! |
| Azreal the Cheshire Cat from Wonderland says (13/Jan/2004): |
This is my 2nd favorite game and that says a whole lot. Seeing as I have played most RPG's that hit the market and have a game collection of over 100 games, placing this at number 2 is a very high honor for Xenogears. (Its being beaten by Final Fantasy 6)
This game is plot heavy, something that I look for. Actually for a period of time this game had influenced my writting quite a bit. With so many powerful themes and tough issues in this game it is easy to say that this has the best written story ever found in an original video game. The story follows Fei a young man who has no memory of the past just the knowledge that he posseses an incredable fighting skill. After helping to prepare for his friends wedding, a group of fighting Gears land in his small town. The combat gets out of hand quickly and soon the civilians are being killed. Unable to bear to watch anymore Fei boards an unmaned Gear in order to help out. After witnessing his friends death he blacks out. Only to awaken to survivors accusing stairs. Discovering that he destroyed his village he is cast out. That is about the first hour of this massive game. You will discover that it is quite big, I say the minimum amount of time that you need to put into this game is 85 hours, and that is the bear minimum. Those who do not like to read alot should avoid this game all together, if you thought the half hour cut scenes in Xenosaga are bad wait till you see this. There are scenes in this game where the characters will talk for over an hour, only to have a brief interuption and then go back to talking. One thing that took me by suprise is the use of real phycological terminology, with muliple references to the ego, id and super ego. To alot of people that may just seem like jibberish but it really hit home with me.
This game isn't carried on plot alone either, it has all the makings of a good RPG. The combat system is fresh and unique using point based attacks that can form combinations. Using some pretty interesting superhuman martial arts animations it makes the game feel like some anime. As it should when you consider that the game uses anime style graphics that although seem a little outdated serve there purpose well.
Using 3D backdrops with multiple levels in hieght and depth you will at times emerse yourself in your environment, which can be huge. I believe that this is actually the only RPG that Squaresoft has done where the entire game is done in complete 3D environments which you can explore from all angles in a 360 degree frame.
The musical score featured here is really something else, rarely you will encounter a game that has music that sounds THIS good. Its amazing, you can't go wrong with any of the pieces here!
I would like to touch down on the games difficulty, this game features boss fights that are TOUGH! It is rare to find a no-brainer, all of them require your skills to be honed to perfection.
Overall this is the best RPG that isn't a remake that is out for the PS1. This game is so good that I suggest that you go to any lengths neccessary to get a copy. Any plot driven gamer that does not know of Xenogears should cower in shame.

Another masterpiece from Square |
| Patricio Mendez from Miami, FL says (14/Aug/2000): |
This is a wonderful RPG and it has all the components to be one. Graphics are beautiful sprites but can be pixalated when zoomed in, the "Gears" look awesome and with great detail. This game has one of the best battle systems in RPGs which give you more control in battles. This game is also very big, it's over 70 hours i length with more than an hour of Anime style cutscenes which may not be as many as Lunar but come as a treat when watching them. The game starts becoming fun after about five hours into the game, but it's massive and compelling story makes up for it. This is one of the best RPGs out there. It's a must-buy for any RPG fan.
