Two ships. One ball. One goal. Any questions?4022

Phil Riehl from Salem, OR says (14/Oct/2001):
You've got this space age -lookin' craft with lasers, missiles (and if you've got the dough, a vast array of special weapons) and you're blowing the crap out of the other guy so you can get the ball and score before he does. That's the gist of Battlesport.

When released for the 3DO, I tried it. I couldn't stop playing until I was the champion. Everything from the announcer to the opponents to the weapons to the ships kept me in this futuristic world of Battlesport.

Imagine basketball severely enhanced. There's a goal and it moves - rotating or floating or even transporting. There's also a ball - and it flys around the arena as you try to get ahold of it before the other guy does. To keep him away from it, you blast him with missles and lasers until the announcer exclaims, "Oh! That's gotta hurt!"

This flurried frenzy of a game will keep you on the edge of your seat, pressing so hard on the buttons, you'll probably wear them out. Go against the comp or your friend, either way, it's a blast. No pun intended.

Let's get on the actual stats of it. The graphics on the 3DO and PSX versions really aren't that great, but you don't need them to be because you get the idea of what's what in the arenas. It's not so pixely that you don't know what the object is, but it's not very realistic, either. The sound - pretty normal explosion sounds, but the music really enhances the gameplay. It's like the music in "Psycho" - it makes you play harder and go faster. The announcer really makes the game. In the 3DO version, there are alternate things he says if you put in a code and if you press his buttons, he kicks you out of the equipment store. It's hilarious.

With certain ships, it's kinda hard to turn side to side to look around you and find where the ball and your opponent are, but as you advance through the game, you'll get better ships and that'll be less and less of a problem.

Overall, I give it a 9. Not quite a 10 because of the graphics and stuff, but I play it quite frequently. I just picked up the PSX version, lucky me, and it rocks. If you find it, buy it. You and your friends will have hours of fun with it and laugh your butts off too.
