I bought hexen about 5 years after everyone else, so I've seen better graphics, although there are some really nice effects. For example, the sky has scrolling clouds, and varies from level to level (on level one, the sky is deep blue, with dark storm clouds and flashes of lightning, while on the second level, the sky is a deep red sunset). Other little touches, such as leaves falling from trees mean that while the graphics aren't amazing, they really build a fanastic environment.
As soon as you load it up, it's clear that the game is similar to doom, but with more varied locations, fanastically atmospheric music, rpg elements, and the ability to look up and down! The only difference is that while doom is easy and fun to pick up and play straight away, hexen will require a lot of practice and, above all, patience. There are moments in the game when it is very easy to get completely lost, and sometimes not enough clues are given for puzzles. Often, solving a puzzle is as a result of luck rather than careful deduction.
Despite these complaints though, hexen is a well polished game that will be enjoyed by anyone who likes their games atomspheric and epic.
