Great Action RPG |
jonp from Florida, USA says (7/Aug/2000): |
Vagrant Story is a worthy addition to the Squaresoft stable. The graphics are excellent, using clever texture mapping to give the impression of stylized anime characters and cool lighting effects for the magic spells and combat techniques. The music is atmospheric and well done, as are the sounds. The box stacking puzzles are tiresome, but a necessary evil. The true joy of the game for me was the limitless options regarding the weapon and armor building mixing and matching blades, hilts and gems to create the perfect weapon for a class of monster. The downside to that style, having to switch weapons frequently, is a minor inconvience at worst. The story is a clever tale of betrayals and religious and political intrigue, well told and sophisticated, involving a legion of characters and factions. If, like me, you enjoy a good story and some 'stuff' micromanagement, this game should be high on your must buy list.
Rent it from RedOctane (www.RedOctane.com).

Another great game from Square Soft |
| SJ Cecil from Archdale,NC (USA) says (10/May/2001): |
Vagrant Story looks great and plays pretty good too. It leans a little more to the action genre than to rpg and that was a little dissapointing to me. The battle engine leaves alot to be desired as well. Fighting can become quite tedious, to the point of sheer boredom, but all in all the game is entertaining. If you're expecting Final Fantasy, you'll be dissapointed. This game is more like the original Parasite Eve. Definately worth playing.

vagrant story-addiction anyone? |
| sean & sher from london,UK says (19/May/2003): |
The top line summary speaks volumes about this game.Actually quite a few things come to mind that i hope to share with you about this game and why it inspired me to write my own review.
#1:The storyline is one of the strongest. And the animation and atmosphere is spot on.The hero is "cool".
#2:The game play is nice and easy.Opposed to FF7 which had randomn fight scenes, here you can either fight or run thus prolonging your game life and increasing your love of this game.
#3:The graphics for todays standards are tolerable. Not the best but damn worth if for the game as a whole.
#4:The options...wow,inexhaustable!.You'll see what i mean when you play the game.Just give it time and patience.Well worth it.
So many more things spring to mind but i won't bore you to death. So take my advice first time round and get this game!.You will NOT be disappointed.

Vagrant Story 10/10 |
| Darren from Adelaide South Australia says (8/Nov/2000): |
Vagrant Story would have to be the best RPG on the Playstation I have yet played. The graphics are superb. The game is veiwed in a 3D enviorment and you can veiw every aspect of your surroundings. The story line keeps you thinking all the way through. The background music and the graphics are very atmospheric. Personally I enjoyed this game more than Final Fantasy 8 as you have a great deal more freedom within the game plus a 3D enviorement which is sadly lacking in FF8.
Replay value is great and enables you to explore an extra 20% not accessable in first play.
My only gripes with the game is that it's a tad to easy and it should be longer.
Great game - buy it!!!!!!!

Innovative and enchanting: an rpg gem |
| A gamer from Melbourne Australia says (9/Jan/2002): |
Over the years I have played through many rpg's and have been, most of the time, heartily satisfied by the experience. Yet two things have caused me much frustration and annoyance at game developers who have amazingly not responded by changing these apparent flaws in their games: story and gameplay.
The majority of rpgs on the market have suffered from slowly developed plot lines and tired if not boring gameplay. Let us take the final fantasy series on the psone as an example. Amazing games, I admit. Epic scope and the most involving and satisfying games I have ever played alongside GTA3,Metal Gear 1 and 2 and Chrono Cross. Yet for each of the series it has taken at leat 4-5 hours for the plot to become thicker and truly immerse you. Luckily, I am patient and have played through the dragging beginning and reaped the awards as the game progressed. Yet, many of my gaming buddies have not been willing to stick through the slow starts and given up early. This is truly a sad thing. Remember how long it took to become truly involved in Xenogears or Final Fantasy 8?
Secondly the gameplay in the final fantasy series on Psone as in Chrono Cross has been mediocre to say the least. Attack, summon, defend etc. It is extremely limited and one can find themselves drifting off if their not careful. There is no player movement and only occasional button presses. Random battles are also the most incredibly annoying game invention ever.
How does this connect to Vagrant Story: this game fixes all these problems. While maintaining a similar level of intensity and involvement in the story as Squaresofts other titles, the action starts immediately. All my gaming friends who could not handle the exhausting start of some other title were captivated by Vagrant story from the very opening scene and finished the game before I did. I hope othe rpg developers realise the importance of grabbing your audience quickly before they run away.
Secondly, the battle system is the most enjoyable and entertaining I have ever played. Although all the basic options have been maintained, you know have full control over your player and the chain and defence abilities keep you eyes wide open. My only gripe is the risk meter and how when you reach your imit youll find yourself unable to land an attack.
It is also worth mentioning that for the psone, this game has an impressive array of in game graphics, sound effects, and backround music. Although these are great, I didnt think it would be worth harping on these issues because these days you can pretty much expect Squaresoft to produce technically impressive and beautiful titles. It is instead the gameplay and story which really stand out and stamp this as a game which really should be used as a guide for future rpg development. Although I have greatly loved the final fantasy series and hope it continues for ever, I really do think it is time to move on in terms of story and particularly gameplay.

Vagrant Story is a preparation for Squares' Upcoming FFXI. |
| Jacques from Mandaluyong, Philippines says (18/Feb/2003): |
In my opinion, Vagrant Story is sortof like a preparation or experimental product that Square manufactured to predict possible results for its upcoming Final Fantasy XI. Anyways, Square just keeps on getting better and better. This game is the answer for those of you who wanted more from the FF series. It has the newest inovations in Square's technology. Here, you can create your own weapons from a wide variety of items, including grips blades and gems to add some status effects. The materials used for creating weapons and armors also varry. In the battlefeild, you can change your weapon anytime you like. Did imention that you will also have 4 different sort of like "limit breaks" for each type of weapon that you use. You will also have a very long list of magic spells to support you in battle. The only thing that this game lacks is summons and a few more FMV's. Sure, your enemies can sometimes summon but you cant. Also, the only force they can summon is spirits or phantoms which are not that powerful. I don't like the box mazes as well, they really eat your time, especialy if your a beginer. Aside fromall the things I mentioned recently, this game is perfect. You can move in a more free environment than that of Final Fantasy. The thing that will impress you about this game is the wide variety of weaponry. Square really did his homework on this section. You will encounter weapon types coming from all around the world. The thing that you may like most about this game is you can play it again and again without losing your achievements in your last game which means you'll just keepon getting stronger and stronger. (Maybe that's why there no leveling up in this game.) Basicaly, you are going to manipulate a single character that is a one-man-army. Sort of like Squallinn FF 8. I mentioned earlier that this game is related to FF XI. It is related because FF XI is exactly the same, only with summons and you play along with other people in the web toform your own party. In conclusion, this game is a must, for FF fanatics and other RPG fans.
