Not The Best, But Bandai Have The Right Idea255

David Wilson from Australia says (2/Sep/2000):
I'll come out and say it now, Macross VF-X 2's value is dependant on the one sole fact. If you love Macross (Robotech for our US friends), then this title is going to be the best in it's field. If you don't know what Macross/Robotech is, go find another game, this is less than average for you.

The idea for the gameplay is quite a refreshing approach to a game where your machine of combat can do so much. The problem is that they don't seem to have fixed all of the problems. If they stick with the style and try to make it more natural, we could easily have another style of gameplay on our hands and open up the rest of the world to the Macross universe.

In game combat could also you a bump up. While it feels like you are in combat Macross style, it doesn't have the mass onslaught of enemies that I know of from the various series.

For example, having more than 3 fighters attacking you would make the game more intense, as at the moment, you can concentrate on taking out one of the fighters with little fear the other two are going to interupt you. Give us around 6-9 fighters that also attack you wingman, then there is a game that will test your skill and leave you sweating.

Graphics and sound are great all-round. The size of the mecha feels right, the sounds of gun pods screaming and missiles whining all give the feel you are in the seat of the 60 foot mecha. There is a slight pop-up problem where you can see the mecha you want to destroy, but not the building he is behind. This is probably the only noticable glitch in it's graphic display.

Music... argh the music... Even my love for Macross couldn't stop me from hating the sounds. Give me the macross plus music or even the some old 60's music than this! The only good music I found was the mission briefing and even that gets on the nerves after a while.

Ok, gameplay problems aside, it still does have some great moments. Mainly the one on one slug fest with an intelligently flown mecha. These I love as they are now walk in the park and you truly need to understand the limitations of you fighter to survive and it feels great when you do!

Not much of a review, but I think it gets the point across. If Bandai could tweak the engine a bit, add a few hundred more fighters to annoy you and maybe add the ability to choose your target, it might be turn into a very enjoyable game. So far they been beating down the right path... It's just a question of will the continue walking it?

For non-macross fans I give it a 4.
Macross fans I give it a 8.
