Certainly not impresive, but well executed and fun little shooter anyway. | | Julio C. from Queretaro, México says (7/Nov/2001): | Overhead shooters are indeed a type of game that is somewhat rare on the Playstation console, despite of the huge success of this genre a few years ago in the arcades. A few months back, I could only name Raystorm as one of the very few that were actually worth its retail price.
Psikyo, a game developer known in the arcades for cool shooters such as the Aero Fighters series has brought home Strikers 1945 2
(If you think that you may have missed the prequel, don´t worry since it was not released for home systems as far as I´m concerned!).
The goal for the game is very simple, pick any plane you like and shoot everything that moves, while grabbing any power ups that may get in your way. But is it any good?
Graphics:
The game is certainly not going to impress you if you don't like 2-D graphics, but if you do you´ll notice that all vehicles and battle grounds are well done and very detailed. Explosions look decent and the overall weapons look good. The bosses are impressive since they morph into more complex machinery as the battle heats up.
Sound:
Like the graphics, the music and sound effects are unimpresive but they get the job done. The tunes are adecuate to the shooter genre and don't get in the way. Sound effects such as the explosions are just okay.
Control:
Very simple control scheme will allow a quick dive into the action. Speaking of which, can get quite hectic at times since the game has very little to no slowdown to hinder your progress.
Replayability:
This is the type of game that you´ll play for the love of the genre, not to unlock any type of secrets since ther are none to find. However, there are six ships with different weapons to master, the stages are randomly selected every time you play and the difficulty settings change to spice things up a bit.
Final words:
As you can see, Strikers 1945 is not a game for people who want flashy games, but for arcade junkies and retro gamers who enjoy solid and fun gameplay. If you are one of these, consider a purchase (or a rental, at least) as money well spent.
