what i have to say | | Meg from USA says (25/Jun/2002): | I think Legend of Dragoon is a very good game, but it had the same old guy has to rescue girl thing going on. The relationship between Dart and Shana was kind of annoying through the whole thing. Even though the romance situation was the same as every other game, the rest of the game was excellent. The plot twists kept me playing. I found myself surprised most of the time. The characters are very well developed. I personally think that Rose was best developed because you could see why she was so cold to others. I liked Meru the most, personally. She acted like a normal person, even though she wasn't a normal person. I think the battle systems were the best out of all the RPGs I've played. It let you have control of how the character attacked. The graphics were okay in the first 2 discs, but were best in my opinion on discs 3 and 4. The CG animation was cool, even though scarce until the last half of the game. The voice overs were fitting in the CG cinemation. The originality was pretty high. The only other game I heard the word "dragoons" was in Chrono Cross from SQUARE. Other than that Legend of Dragoon was unique, exciting game.
| LOD the ledgend that takes our breath away | | Michael Vesnevasa from USA,North Carolina, Ceder Grove says (24/Jun/2002): | this rpg was my first experience with rpg gaming and frankly it stool my breath. the game is a realilistic adventure that takes place in mideval times. The graphics were amazing and i still say that after playing it through 23 times.The love circal was much thought into and the character development was outstanding compared to FF games (except maybe FF9 or 10)I personaly thought the elemental facters were original. Each Character had there own elemental propertys. though there is one or two thing i found to be to simple minded. One. The Dragoons and the characters,at the begining it was great but as the game progressed(after dart rose and lazavits became dragoons)the out come of the game was imanite.I knew without doute that all the other characters would be dragoons. What im trying to say the plot of the development of the dragoons was...with a word Cheesey they writters should have made the characters more mysteryous, and less stereotypical... i did not have any problems with the items like other critics. also the game seemed to me to be too short. I did like the voice overs in the game cut screens. my idiviual cariter reveiws
Dart:A strong well thought into caricter who was not a superhero and had flaws.one such being to prone to doing exactly as was suggested instead of thinking for himself. i give him a 10
Shana:A beautyful Lass.who fell deeply in love with dart. Though her emotions drove her. Proved to be a great warrior in the end. I give her a 8 because her over done fimmine qualitys
Lazavits: A proude knight and triumphent warrior. His character was a tad sexist but not ofensively. i found his love for his mother sweet as well as funny in the fact that he seemed so powerful you would never think him to be a Mommas boy. He gets a 9.5
Rose:sexy. but deadly she did what she thought was the best idea but was wrong more then once.a powerful character.who lost her only friends in the dragon campaign and her only love to a stone curse(he later apears as darts dad or as rose knows him Zeig)her emotional sheild frightened me but also made me like her even more. She is rated a 10
Albert:the king of serdio. he was a typicical noble from the medievil times.(except that he treated dart an dthe others as equals)his skill tought to him by lazavits was far better then his teacher's.i give him a 8.7 he was (a bit overdone as a noble blood)
Hatchel: Hatchel has to be my favorite character. He provides the comic releif.though his mission is to find his lost daughter he joins dart as a powerful matial artist. I find the mystery between him dart and darts mother very interesting thoughout the story this mystery becomes clear. Hatchel is a bit cheesey but not as much as some of the othe characters.Hatch the master of the rough art gets a 9.8
Kongle:extremly cheesey as a barbarian his strange speech paterns show his unintelagents. but that is mor then made up for with his skill with the axe. His caricter development was very hard to understand.He gets a 6.9
I cannot remember the names of the last to characters o ill use there weapon instead.
Mace:funy very clumsy young wingly. who was beautyful in her own way.she was not all that cheesey but she was kinda anoying at time because of her lack of damage and her hard to do additions. A 9.0 is her rank
Bow.(shana's replacement.): Harsh female character who also survived the attack on Neet as well as Dart.she had little time to develope as a caricter but was well developed in the limeted time. She ranks a 8.9
Overall i loved this game and recommend others play it it realism shoked me and it graphic blew me away. I rank it on a scall from one to ten as an eleven.
| This game is the best RPG in the whole RPG software. | | Just a girl from OR says (14/Jun/2002): | I think that LOD is better than ff7 because the characters are developed better and they express more of their feelings. The boss fights are great because you can choose whichever addition you want from the selection if you had completed the addtions and you can control the hits, like on Dart's Blazing Dynamo. You have to hit the X button correctly so it can impact, and by using this, the producers let us control how much damage we will want to inflict on the monsters. Albert has a strong addition, so you can make him mess up on his addition so that a weaker addition person like Meru can kill the monster with just one attack. Plus, the graphics are the coolest, I have never seen so cool some graphics can be. It looks so clean cut that it could have come from some sort of movie. Also the Setting and the meaning of the game don't stray from the main point. The game is very straightforward and you can't make a mistake and have to start the game all over. The setting of the game is not very hard to understand. People may say that Llyod and Dart and all the character seem similar to other characters from other games but I don't, they are all unique and have their own personality. So for all those people out there who own a Playstation or Playstation 2, and are looking for a RPG or any kind of game, I suggest you get this one.
| LOD Rocks! | | A gamer says (20/May/2002): | To start out with, anyone that says that this game is a huge rip off of any RPG needs to be committed. It seems that the main thing the people are comparing this game to is FF7, especially characters. Well let me put in what I think. Dart vs. Cloud: Cloud was cold and rather dislikable in the begining of the game and was constantly feeling sorry for himself throughout; Dart on the other hand cared for everyone and thought only of the well being of others constantly. Shana vs. Tifa: Tifa was too wrapped up in her feelings for Cloud which made her, at least to me, rather annoying; Shana on the other hand let her feelings be known but never was constantly hanging on those feelings. Shana and Dart vs. Cloud and Tifa: Dart kinda figured from the small hints Shana was giving how she felt about him, but as he stated before he thought of her only as a sister; Cloud on the other hand would never have guessed it until it was practically thrown in his face. Lloyd vs. Sephiroth: Lloyd was misguided by the words of "Emperor Diaz" and eventually wound up helping Dart and company, Sephiroth on the other hand was just all around bad and would have sooner killed Cloud then helped him. Lavitz Death vs. Aerith's Death: Lavitz died when he was attacking Lloyd to save Albert and Lloyd killed him in self defense; Sephiroth killed Aeirth from behind like the coward he is just to stop her from praying to use Holy which as long as he lived couldn't activate anyway. As for Graphics, the CG cutscenes in LOD are far better than those of FF7. Mind you the normal cutscenes that used text are a bit...odd to say the least, the CG scenes are better as well as their use of voices makes it better because it helps you to better feel what the character is like from the tone. I much prefer the battle system of LOD to FF7. The additions are much more interesting than the Limit Breaks. Mind you some of the Limit Breaks put some of the additions to shame such as Clouds Omnislash but the difficulty in using the additions adds more fun to it as well as the odds that, unless you're using the Ultimate Wargod, there's a chance that an enemy might attempt a counter during the addition. Also the additions require a bit more thinking, than with the limit breaks, because with the additions you have the amount of SP they acquire and the amount of damage they do to take into consideration when choosing, with the limit breaks it's just go with the strongest. One of the main upsides though for FF7, the boss battles require a bit more strategy to beat than the ones in LOD. Like Ruby and Emerald weapon for instance. Now also though LOD does have it's downsides such as it's item pouch and map system. As well as some of it's akward animations. But those seem to be the only things that stick out more than anything. Story Line wise, I was able to get more into the LOD story line then the FF7 story. The FF7 story line seemed more like a massive Soap Opera that was almost non-stop. The LOD story line was neatly broken up into chapters and was a bit more palatable as well as more easily followed. Now I'm not condeming FF7, and it is an excellent game in it's own right. I mean if it weren't for that game I may have never even picked up Legend of Dragoon or any other RPGs for that matter. But it's not exactly the greatest game in existence either. And anyway, if you look at FF7, it's got rip offs as well in it. The fact of the matter is, no one RPG is 100% original in it's design. There will always be something in there from another RPG. But don't go basing all your desicions based on some bias desicion because you can't see past the few "rip-offs" that do exist to see the actual game itself. And not to base the game on biased desicions because you think that another game is the best one ever created. In conclusion, LOD is a well rounded game, with a few obvious bugs but nothing that detracts too much from the main gaming experience. But also FF7 is also a very good game as well with advantages over LOD. Now if only someone could take all the advantages of every RPG created and get rid of the downsides of each, they would have one sweet RPG.
| The legends of dragoon has a great story. | | ken marcotte from lancaster,california,USA says (12/May/2002): | The legends of dragoon is a r.p.g. fans dream. You will find the story inspiring; it will arouse your imaganation as it will take you to a land far away, and lead you on a quest that you will never forget. You will find the attacking setup challenging but fun, overall i'm saying is it is a great game. Out of the fifty games I own it is buy far one of the BEST!
| A Great RPG | | Rage3445 from Klamath Falls, OR USA says (9/May/2002): | Quit basing this game on other games would you guys just for a few... This game was started before many FF games. Where in FF7 do you get to do many hit combo's?? Can be annoying if you can get them, but that is the fun of learning. The level system is better also, you dont finish the game off at level 99, this game is based more on REAL RPG, you know the ORIGINAL D&D! Not some twisted sci-fi rip off of D&D. This game has good graphics, but graphics dont make game. Look at FF8 great graphics, story line was worse than 7's but all in all I think Legend of Dragoon has been one of the few good RPG's produces since the Nintendo day of Dragon Warrior. If you dont like the game then go get some poor story line, good graphic that is a rip off of what RPG should be made of. I wish people would put more into storylines and less into graphics...
| Ive never played FF but this is still the best!! | | Christine from Big Bear, California says (3/May/2002): | Ok. It started out great and ended kick a**. Why, you ask is it so great? Well the transformations, volcals, graphics, characters - need I continue?! I'm a writer. Not very common in a teenager if you ask me, but ive published. Ive been thinking on wrighting a book on this plot.Silly of course but creative in mind. ****I'd give it Two thumbs up!!!****
| The Legend of Dragoon | | Game Boy from Long Beach, California says (15/Apr/2002): | I've been playing LOD for only under a week now, and see more similarities to Legend of Legaia than to FF. Those of you who've played Legaia: if you stop and think about it, you'll see this is true.
| Good game, one of the best ever!! | | Ash from Yakima says (10/Mar/2002): | Well, i thought that LOD was one of the best games i've ever played. Sure, it could be better, but hey, it was better then FFT, and FF8, that doesn't say much, they both sucked!!! But come on, how can people compair Tifa with Shanna? They are in no way the same! Sure, they both like the hero of the story, but come on, no way Shanna can beat Tifa. Don't get me wrong, I love Shanna and Tifa both, but come on, no way are they related. I will admit, FF7 was the best R.P.G. ever made, but thired would have to be LOD (second would be Shining Force). I loved the battle system, and the transformations ruled!!! The only flaw would be you could only carry 32 items, it made it more realestic, but come on, i play R.P.G.s to get away from reality, not to stay in it. Other then that, really good story line, good graphics, and great charicters.
Dart and Cloud are in no way the same!! Come on, the buster sword rules!!!
My fav was Lavitz, he was the best, to bad Lloyd killed him, oh well.
| Think for a sec. | | cry1build2get3 from Abilene, Tx ; U.S.A. says (6/Mar/2002): | Most people base too much in graphics, and I'll admit that it doesn't have the best graphics until you get to the CG's. It makes up for that with the interesting twist on the carrying limit and the awesome new way of additions.
| A good game, with a few flaws. | | Shadow from St. Petersburg, Florida; United States of America says (4/Mar/2002): | Ok, first off, this will be the one and only mention of the Final Fantasy series in this review. Why? Because this is NOT a review of a Final Fantasy game. I liked Legend of Dragoon. It had an inovative new twist to the classic battle system, very nice computer generated cut sceens, characters that actually had a bit of personality, and a storyline that led you by the nose only if you didn't keep up.
At the time I bought the game, BEFORE other games that are it's technological superiors, it's graphics were top notch. The cut sceens actually used voice overs, which was refreshing and long past due in roleplaying games. There are flaws though, some of the character movement was choppy. Some of it was odd, like those 'horses' in the opening sceen. And the backrounds for the battle sceens were rather strange, like the battles were inside a coke can. Still, this is nit-picking and doesn't take away a lot from the game.
The battle system gave the comforting familarity of the random encounters, turn based combat(which still rules for bathroom breaks and falling asleep after a long night of playing), and a full range of commands. However it added enjoyable twists. Such as a more limited item selection which made your choices more important and your backpack's capacity more realistic. The Additions system, which actually made this couch potato work for his uber-damage. And limiting magic to Dragoons for the most part, again making it more realistic. Again, there were flaws, the Additions were a pain in the butt sometimes, espeicially using them over and over to build them up to higher levels. The fact that your experience was split between your characters seemed annoying at first, but your characters don't take as much experience to raise in levels as some roleplaying games, so it balanced out. The one thing I did not like about the battle system was... nothing. There was not one major flaw, though I will grant that not being able to pause was a PAIN.
Next I come to characters. I'll break my rule and mention Final Fantasy again in here a couple times, so bear with me. I liked the characters in this game. Dart actually wore armor that would be somewhat effective, so did Lavitz. Their weapons weren't terribly unrealistic(like a certain character named after evaporated air), but nor were they uninteresting. Shana's bow actually worked differently than the other's melee weapons, and the attacks were for the most part semi-realistic. The character animations were easily on par with other games of the time, and the fact that the characters grunted and articulated was another breath of fresh air.
For those of you out there that insist on comparing the character architypes to other games, I tell you this. If you look, every game rips off someone, be it mythology, pop culture, comic books, television shows, or what-not. To name a few... dragons, Masamune, 'mechs', airships, power crystals, and even the concept of 'heroes'. Every idea comes from somewhere and bears the mark of this source. And if anyone thinks that the 'tragic love triangle' of Final Fantasy 7 was original... well, just seek medical attention now, please. Now on to the characters themselves.
- I liked Dart, he was actually a rather human character. He was worried about his villiage and acted irationally at times, but his soul and character shined through more than once.
- Shana was another believable character. She was very human in her reactions and responses, from being stubborn while being rescued (just ask someone who has participated in a combat rescue, we civies can be amazingly stupid), to her maturing crush for Dart throughout the game.
- Lavitz was a bit of a caricture, but a good one. He was honor and loyalty taken to their fantasy extreme and given classical form as a knight. And he used a non-standard weapon to boot.
- Rose, she was convincing in her role. She'd seen her world die and the new one grow and formed her emotional shell to protect herself from the radical changes. She also did what she thought she had to in order to protect the world, something rarely touched on in a video game.
- Kongol was another caricture, that of the brawny butt-kicker, but every game has one of these, as does every anime, comic book, most books and nearly all table-top roleplaying games.
- Honestly I didn't pay enough attention to the other characters to remember them well, and I've only just begun replaying the game again, so I can't comment on them.
Meanwhile, the Dragoons were a nice touch, giving the game another facet to explore and play with. After all, how much harder would the game be if you didn't use your Dragoon forms? The animations for the attacks were nice, though it was a bit disapointing in that if you wanted to actually appreciate them you had to see someone else pressing the buttons. The magical skills were also well thought out, representing the character well in both form, function, and personality. Anyone that thinks these graphics can't hold up to Final Fantasy 7 needs to go back and actually watch it's graphics with the same critical eye you've turned towards Legend of Dragoon.
Next is the story and world map, and I group these two together for a good reason. They both operate on the same theory in Legend of Dragoon. Cater to both the new player and the old pro, but impress those that stand in between. Older players will notice elements from other games, and find fault because they know what could be better. New players will be coping with the system itself and paying more attention to what is being put before them right now. The middle range players, meanwhile, will be comfortable with the system and able to look beyond it and enjoy the story, graphics and overall feel. If you pay attention, you'll follow the plot line at a relatively fast pace, if you pick up the clues as they're give. But if you're slow on the draw, the game will eventually pull you forward. And everyone catches up at the end of the game anyways, because that's how plotlines work. You build up to the fast-paced, action packed finale, you do not put your game in a perpetual state of action because it will lose all meaning in the process.
Now, after this rather long winded, and still not complete, review of this game, I'll make a long story short(er). Legend of Dragoon is a good, solid roleplaying game. It is innovative and traditional, with solid graphics and a decent story. In it's day it was a very good game. It's been left behind by the times though, it's graphics paling when held against newer games and it's innovation less than impressive when compared to newer steps. It's easy enough for new players, but a bit overwhelming. It offers some challenges to experienced players, but is somewhat trite. And it's a great middle ground to launch you into the more hardcore roleplaying experiences once you've come into your own playing roleplaying games.
| Not an FF rip-off | | A gamer says (24/Feb/2002): | I'm not quite sure what some of you people are talking about... Everyone is saying Dragoon is a rip-off of Final Fantasy 7, because Dart has a sword like Cloud, and Shana has a crush on Dart just like Tifa did on Cloud. Please, people! I can't think of any RPG where the main character doesn't use a sword as his weapon, and the main chick character doesn't have a crush on the main guy. That's what practically makes an Role Playing Game. In Devil May Cry, Dantes' main weapon is usually a sword (Ifrit Gauntlets aren't swords). Trish has a crush on Dantes, so does that mean Devil May Cry copies Final Fantasy 7 too? I don't think so. I belive Legends of Dragoon are their own game, and aren't a rip-off of any games.
| Listen Up!! | | Dash Gallent from Kentucky U.S.A. says (24/Feb/2002): | Alright, i'm sick of this! I'm trying to read this and all you people can talk about is Final Fantacy. Get off it. Yes, final fantasy is the best rpg ever made. No this isnt a rip off in any way though. Any game with a good plot is a good rpg (With a few exeptions of course.) Now this games graphics are pretty good. Graphics arnt everything though! The attack thing is original and a new interesting addition to a game. The plot was pretty well placed and I'm happy that I could get so in to the dragoon changes and stuff. The dragoon change with magic and a new attack was insperational to me as a writer. Now as to realations to another game. Give me more! Big men? You want a bunch of small scrawny kids doing the fighting. And oh, sombody might use a spear! How dare! They must be cid. Now ignorants. Cid uses spears and lances. The guy in this game uses a javalin. So naaa! And you think that as a main guy, if you travel with a hot chick for a year, that you wont hit on her. Then your gay! The girls is the same, you hang with a hunk for a while, you'll fall for his personality. Game or not! This games disigners are original and amazing. The stardust? I don't understand it, but i'm tottaly in to them. The item thing is more than aggrivating though! What is with that! They lost two stars just for that! The other is for its ignoring all characters but Dart. He's the main character, not the only one! Sheeash! Anyway...peace out!
| FF and LOD working together? | | The Mad Hatter from Antwerp says (14/Feb/2002): | Everybody should be thinking diferently! Legend of Dragoon is not a rip of of Final Fantasy. It's normal for RPG's to be alike. That's why everybody loves these games. If they combine the good aspects of LOD with the good aspects of FF I think we good get a pretty cool game. I mean for instants: the battle system of LOD and the 3D seroundings of FF and then both the story's toogether. Think about it. The Legend of the Dragoon itself was the greatest RPG I have ever played, when I started to play I was just complitely dragged in with the story, so I just couldn't stop playing. Just now I have finely played it out. And now I'm bored so I'm just going to play it again. I never had the urge to play a FF game again. Legend of the Dragoon has something special I can't say what it is, but it's there. I'm starting a site about Legend of the Dragoon so when it's finnished please come and take a piek. If you don't have the game yet BUY IT.
| What is it with Final Fatasy 7 | | Nicholas from TN says (10/Feb/2002): | Legend of the Dragoon is out going and very realistic. I liked it very much because of it's hard to finish than any of the Final Fantasy Games including FF9,8,and 7.Okay the game isn't the greatest but it beats a lot of RPGs.
| Legend of Dragoon | | Darkdragon from United States says (4/Feb/2002): | I liked this game though it kind of resembled Final Fantasy 7 it was still a cool game in that, but it had good bosses i did like the graphics but not the story line it wasnt enough. I didnt liked that lavitz died I thought lavitz was sweet and they go ahead and killed him off which sucked. I like the dragoon forms and the magic they had, I really like the game.
| RPG's are all the same | | Michael from Ho chi ming city,Vietnam says (26/Jan/2002): | Legend of dragoon is just like Final Fantasy except Final Fantasy was the real RPG and all they others are just total rip-off this include Legend of dragoon, this is the only game I fell asleep will playing. The caracters are all the same, the main caracter is always a guy and fall in love with the second most important caracter(mostly a girl) and there's always a big man.
others coincidence, Dart and Cloud both have a sword and they main goal is to get veagence.
Cloud=Dart
Tifa=Shana
Cid=Lavitz
Barret=Kongol
Sephiroth=Lloyd
Yuffie=Mero
p.s. The star goes to Kongol
| Good... but total rip off of FF7 | | stefanie 13 years old from hearst canada says (26/Jan/2002): | caracter rip off:
Dart=Cloud swordman, main character, both fall in love with the girl in your party and both there home was destroyed by a monster. sephiroth and the black monster.
Shana = Tifa , fall in love with the main character. live in the same town as the main character and were friend as child.
Barret= Kongol bif mother f**ker.
Cid = lavitz/albert spear
meru= yuffie exited and sexy
Lloyd= Sephiroth high experience swordman enemy againt Dart/cloud
that all I have to say
Its a good game!
| A Great game but... | | Nutral LOD from Hawaii honolulu USA says (25/Jan/2002): | For some of you people who gave this game a 1and related this to final fantasy VII I have one thing to say were you paid to say that. I mean dart is'nt anything like Cloud in terms of personality. I didn't see (so far 4th disk) dart being persicuted for being a former enemy. He was not a mercinary either. So what if dart and shana fall in love with each other. In almost all RPG's the main character has someone special. The limit break/dragoon system was the exact opisit, instead of being hit by an enemy(final fantasy VII) you need to attack the enemy speeding up the charge time with different additions. The Final Fantasy's are all great games but saying they are a complete rip off from each other is just wrong. For the people wh gave it a 1, I can undersand this game as A LOT of flaws, such as the graphics, bad Translations, limited item storage, The constant switchings of disks, and extremily long spells, This game is one of the best RPG's I've ever payed. I was so hooked I didn't go outside for two days. The graphics aren't so bad you can't tell the bad/good guys. And any ways do you really buy a game for it;s graphics I mean doesn't the fun factor mean anything to you LOD haters. The voice acting was actually pretty good( not like Valkyrie profiles boy in the wishing stone part who tataly sounds like ash from pokenon), This is a great game with many areas in which to improve. It is far away from the worst RPG game ever invented and also far away from being perfect. This game has a great base but needs some improvement. No game is perfect because they try to reach as many people as possible not just on specific group, P.S. I personaly think their movies are better than any final fantasy I have ever seen. Not counting FFX which I have yet to try.
| The l;edgend of dragoon is the best RPG I ever played | | Guillaume from Hearst, Canada says (25/Jan/2002): | The new consept of addition is very cool that makes it very different from Final Fantasy where you just press ,attack and it always do the same attack. Also the dragoon thing is very cool. You can choose from magic to attack,and you do the whole difference on your attack. You also have magic items that, to increase the power, you have to press x really fast for a better attck My brother said that final fantasy is the original RPG and this is a total ripp of. But I say that there is absolutely no ripp of. Ledgend of dragoon is a completly new kind a game. The grafics are really goods the only things I dislike are that you can only have 32 items and that you have too much caracter to play with so some will level up more often than other
