Best game for the PS1 ever42169

jason from tampa,USA says (8/Aug/2004):
This is the best game for the playstation.
Its graphics are very good and also when it goes into in depth mode on the graphics thats really cool. The sound and music of the game was really great i loved how they switched music to fit the scene of every part like whenn you are in just a normal battle or facing bosses. The Gameplay is awesome i loved the addations this is one of the main things i loved about it besides the dragoons.Ps2 games should think about putting in stuuf like that in the newer games instead of just like other games you just press attack how boring is that but being able to control the attacks you do and other things such as doing the full addition to being counter attacked its put the whole fun into this game.Your lifespan gradually gets higher which is great cause then you can learn many more things and defeat some of the most powerful of enimes in the game or even just some simple creatures you train with in the game. This game is a great game the funfactor was like forever going i just could never stop playing this game when i got it it is a really game hook on.This game is of a new purpose to most long lined fighting action games it is like one i have never seen even for some of the newer systems. The value of this game is great you will love every penny you put into this game to buy it is the best. The only thing i am waiting for is legend of dragoon 2 it would be so awesome it will probably come out for the ps2 or maybe the ps3. I am sure it will be a big thriller though when it does please hurry up and make it and dont forget about all the additions and everything.

A good game, with a few flaws.6128

Shadow from St. Petersburg, Florida; United States of America says (4/Mar/2002):
Ok, first off, this will be the one and only mention of the Final Fantasy series in this review. Why? Because this is NOT a review of a Final Fantasy game. I liked Legend of Dragoon. It had an inovative new twist to the classic battle system, very nice computer generated cut sceens, characters that actually had a bit of personality, and a storyline that led you by the nose only if you didn't keep up.
At the time I bought the game, BEFORE other games that are it's technological superiors, it's graphics were top notch. The cut sceens actually used voice overs, which was refreshing and long past due in roleplaying games. There are flaws though, some of the character movement was choppy. Some of it was odd, like those 'horses' in the opening sceen. And the backrounds for the battle sceens were rather strange, like the battles were inside a coke can. Still, this is nit-picking and doesn't take away a lot from the game.

The battle system gave the comforting familarity of the random encounters, turn based combat(which still rules for bathroom breaks and falling asleep after a long night of playing), and a full range of commands. However it added enjoyable twists. Such as a more limited item selection which made your choices more important and your backpack's capacity more realistic. The Additions system, which actually made this couch potato work for his uber-damage. And limiting magic to Dragoons for the most part, again making it more realistic. Again, there were flaws, the Additions were a pain in the butt sometimes, espeicially using them over and over to build them up to higher levels. The fact that your experience was split between your characters seemed annoying at first, but your characters don't take as much experience to raise in levels as some roleplaying games, so it balanced out. The one thing I did not like about the battle system was... nothing. There was not one major flaw, though I will grant that not being able to pause was a PAIN.

Next I come to characters. I'll break my rule and mention Final Fantasy again in here a couple times, so bear with me. I liked the characters in this game. Dart actually wore armor that would be somewhat effective, so did Lavitz. Their weapons weren't terribly unrealistic(like a certain character named after evaporated air), but nor were they uninteresting. Shana's bow actually worked differently than the other's melee weapons, and the attacks were for the most part semi-realistic. The character animations were easily on par with other games of the time, and the fact that the characters grunted and articulated was another breath of fresh air.

For those of you out there that insist on comparing the character architypes to other games, I tell you this. If you look, every game rips off someone, be it mythology, pop culture, comic books, television shows, or what-not. To name a few... dragons, Masamune, 'mechs', airships, power crystals, and even the concept of 'heroes'. Every idea comes from somewhere and bears the mark of this source. And if anyone thinks that the 'tragic love triangle' of Final Fantasy 7 was original... well, just seek medical attention now, please. Now on to the characters themselves.

- I liked Dart, he was actually a rather human character. He was worried about his villiage and acted irationally at times, but his soul and character shined through more than once.
- Shana was another believable character. She was very human in her reactions and responses, from being stubborn while being rescued (just ask someone who has participated in a combat rescue, we civies can be amazingly stupid), to her maturing crush for Dart throughout the game.
- Lavitz was a bit of a caricture, but a good one. He was honor and loyalty taken to their fantasy extreme and given classical form as a knight. And he used a non-standard weapon to boot.
- Rose, she was convincing in her role. She'd seen her world die and the new one grow and formed her emotional shell to protect herself from the radical changes. She also did what she thought she had to in order to protect the world, something rarely touched on in a video game.
- Kongol was another caricture, that of the brawny butt-kicker, but every game has one of these, as does every anime, comic book, most books and nearly all table-top roleplaying games.
- Honestly I didn't pay enough attention to the other characters to remember them well, and I've only just begun replaying the game again, so I can't comment on them.

Meanwhile, the Dragoons were a nice touch, giving the game another facet to explore and play with. After all, how much harder would the game be if you didn't use your Dragoon forms? The animations for the attacks were nice, though it was a bit disapointing in that if you wanted to actually appreciate them you had to see someone else pressing the buttons. The magical skills were also well thought out, representing the character well in both form, function, and personality. Anyone that thinks these graphics can't hold up to Final Fantasy 7 needs to go back and actually watch it's graphics with the same critical eye you've turned towards Legend of Dragoon.

Next is the story and world map, and I group these two together for a good reason. They both operate on the same theory in Legend of Dragoon. Cater to both the new player and the old pro, but impress those that stand in between. Older players will notice elements from other games, and find fault because they know what could be better. New players will be coping with the system itself and paying more attention to what is being put before them right now. The middle range players, meanwhile, will be comfortable with the system and able to look beyond it and enjoy the story, graphics and overall feel. If you pay attention, you'll follow the plot line at a relatively fast pace, if you pick up the clues as they're give. But if you're slow on the draw, the game will eventually pull you forward. And everyone catches up at the end of the game anyways, because that's how plotlines work. You build up to the fast-paced, action packed finale, you do not put your game in a perpetual state of action because it will lose all meaning in the process.

Now, after this rather long winded, and still not complete, review of this game, I'll make a long story short(er). Legend of Dragoon is a good, solid roleplaying game. It is innovative and traditional, with solid graphics and a decent story. In it's day it was a very good game. It's been left behind by the times though, it's graphics paling when held against newer games and it's innovation less than impressive when compared to newer steps. It's easy enough for new players, but a bit overwhelming. It offers some challenges to experienced players, but is somewhat trite. And it's a great middle ground to launch you into the more hardcore roleplaying experiences once you've come into your own playing roleplaying games.

LOD the ledgend that takes our breath away8027

Michael Vesnevasa from USA,North Carolina, Ceder Grove says (24/Jun/2002):
this rpg was my first experience with rpg gaming and frankly it stool my breath. the game is a realilistic adventure that takes place in mideval times. The graphics were amazing and i still say that after playing it through 23 times. The love circal was much thought into and the character development was outstanding compared to FF games (except maybe FF9 or 10)I personaly thought the elemental facters were original. Each Character had there own elemental propertys. though there is one or two thing i found to be to simple minded. One. The Dragoons and the characters,at the begining it was great but as the game progressed(after dart rose and lazavits became dragoons)the out come of the game was imanite.I knew without doute that all the other characters would be dragoons. What im trying to say the plot of the development of the dragoons was...with a word Cheesey they writters should have made the characters more mysteryous, and less stereotypical... i did not have any problems with the items like other critics. also the game seemed to me to be too short. I did like the voice overs in the game cut screens. my idiviual cariter reveiws

Dart:A strong well thought into caricter who was not a superhero and had flaws.one such being to prone to doing exactly as was suggested instead of thinking for himself. i give him a 10

Shana:A beautyful Lass.who fell deeply in love with dart. Though her emotions drove her. Proved to be a great warrior in the end. I give her a 8 because her over done fimmine qualitys

Lazavits: A proude knight and triumphent warrior. His character was a tad sexist but not ofensively. i found his love for his mother sweet as well as funny in the fact that he seemed so powerful you would never think him to be a Mommas boy. He gets a 9.5

Rose:sexy. but deadly she did what she thought was the best idea but was wrong more then once.a powerful character.who lost her only friends in the dragon campaign and her only love to a stone curse(he later apears as darts dad or as rose knows him Zeig)her emotional sheild frightened me but also made me like her even more. She is rated a 10

Albert:the king of serdio. he was a typicical noble from the medievil times.(except that he treated dart an dthe others as equals)his skill tought to him by lazavits was far better then his teacher's.i give him a 8.7 he was (a bit overdone as a noble blood)

Hatchel: Hatchel has to be my favorite character. He provides the comic releif.though his mission is to find his lost daughter he joins dart as a powerful matial artist. I find the mystery between him dart and darts mother very interesting thoughout the story this mystery becomes clear. Hatchel is a bit cheesey but not as much as some of the othe characters.Hatch the master of the rough art gets a 9.8

Kongle:extremly cheesey as a barbarian his strange speech paterns show his unintelagents. but that is mor then made up for with his skill with the axe. His caricter development was very hard to understand. He gets a 6.9

I cannot remember the names of the last to characters o ill use there weapon instead.

Mace:funy very clumsy young wingly. who was beautyful in her own way.she was not all that cheesey but she was kinda anoying at time because of her lack of damage and her hard to do additions. A 9.0 is her rank

Bow.(shana's replacement.): Harsh female character who also survived the attack on Neet as well as Dart.she had little time to develope as a caricter but was well developed in the limeted time. She ranks a 8.9

Overall i loved this game and recommend others play it it realism shoked me and it graphic blew me away. I rank it on a scall from one to ten as an eleven.

V.C.G (( Very Cool Game))8363

Wyatt from Virginia says (10/Jul/2002):
this game was a very cool game, it had twists that will leave u on the end of ur seat wondering what will happen next. It has great graphics, the people have real good graphics. The sound is ok. I would say this is the greatest RPG game I've played. If u are wondering to get the game or not, u should get it

Cool game. NOT A RIP-OFF!!14761

TheInfiniteOne from The Island Closest to Heaven says (4/Jan/2003):
This is a great game. The story and characters are great. My only beef is that the localization could use some work.9/10
The Gameplay easily tops most Final Fantasies(except 8&10).
The addition system adds some much-needed action to the RPG norm. And the Dragoon system? It is the freaking coolest thing I've seen in an RPG.10/10
The Sound is pretty good. The sound-effects are great and the voice-acting is decent. The music is good but not on the level of Chrono Cross. Oh, and Rose's voice is total $#< remove me > at !.
9/10
The Graphics are FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!!!!!! The CG, animations and special effects are great. The backgrounds look almost PS2 quality( but not quit!) 10/10
This game is hella'-fun. Overall I give this game a 9/10.
The only really bad thing is that after you finish it once you probably won't want to go through it again.
BRING ON THE LEGEND OF DRAGOON 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Must Play Game!!!15309

R from Lousville,Colorado,USA says (12/Jan/2003):
I have to admit that The Legend of the Dragoon could not match up to the games like Finaly Fantasies, but all of those that think of it as a piece of crap game are absolutly wrong. I mean come on, the story is great, telling of a warrior that lost his parents in a fire from the "Black Monster" only when he was a child, and then later on finding out that his father is still alive and trying to destroy the world, and also finds out that one of his own partners is the black monster, who all along is the one trying to save the world, but thet's not even the half of it. You never know whats going to happen next. Even though the graphics during gameplay weren't the best, during the cinemas the grapghics were a great force to be reckoned with, although the PSX's FF games were also very good and detailed. Also during the cinemas there were voices unlike any of the FF games (exception of FF10, I've never played it). So all of you out there that call this game crap, I want you all to shut the hell up!!!

THIS GAME IS #120173

Mikey Brown from Kuna, Idaho, USA says (29/Mar/2003):
This game is far better than FF7 or FF anything! The additions make the game that much better. It makes you search more in depth for that character. I played this game for hours, and loved every second of it. I have beaten the game like 3 times, completed every side quest, and used just about every combination of characters. I am working on my 4th time, and after this, every character will be used. I recomended this for everyone. Not only is the game a freakin rad game, the story is a rad story too.

the power of dragons22309

michael from usa says (26/Apr/2003):
the legend of the dragoon is a great game. there are items and powerups throughout the game. it may be extremely long but there are great attcks u get while in dragoon form. as your dragoon lvl increses so does your d- atk power. the attacks like red eyed dragoon atk take alot of mp and do a ton of dammage.all atks that use the power of a dragon sprit do alot of damage. the stronget of all dragoons is the divine dragoon. it is non elemental and has no weakness. it only learns two magic atks and had a powerfull d atk. it is also has a totaly cool transformation. the divine dragoon oly come at the end of the game when u fight malabu frama but it is worth the wait. it may only have two magic atks (divine ball, divine cannon)but they are pretty cool.they use 50 mp each and u can only use them 1 time each. when u get this game it may seem boaring but good things come to those who wait, but u will be waiting for about 80 to 90 hours to finish this game.

One of the Best!!!!!22408

Brian from Virginia Beach, USA says (27/Apr/2003):
The legend of Dragoon rightfully takes its place among the best RPG's in history(FF&,8,9,10,Chrono Cross, Breath of Fire, etc..) This is so good I would like to play a sequel. LOD rivals final fantasy and should have many sequels just as final fantasy. LOD IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER!!!!!!!!

it's one of my favorite games ever!!!!!22461

A gamer says (28/Apr/2003):
it's one of the best games i've ever played!! one draw back is that you can only hold 32 items... and that some of the bosses are way too hard for the point in the game you're at... but that's about it! the boss i really hate is the Grande Jewl...
if you have never played Final Fantasy and you love the Legend of Dragoon you should definetly play final fantsy, which is also one of my favorite games too!

It's one of the best games I ever played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!26092

Justin Hundley from St. Albans, West Virginia usa says (23/Jun/2003):
The legend of dragoon is an incredible game. I've beat it 3 times and I'm almost done with my 4th. The graphics and story line are awesome!! Final Fantasy isn't even close to being better than it. I could play over and over and over. It's truly the best Playstation game ever made.

Great game really26154

Caiser from Bitola Republic of Macedonia says (24/Jun/2003):
Good scenario, graphics and it's playable. You can say that the scenario of this game is maybe the best ever written apart from ff scenarios. The only thing that is obvious about this game is that games like this are allways about the saving the world so if you ever try to make number 2 you should try something else. You got some awesome cinematics in this game and so is the music.I had a doubt in giving the 10 for this game but when i think about it it's worth it.Continue with your good work.

Brings Joy to the Mind and Tears to the Heart!27526

Kyle S. J. Kitching from Oromocto, New Brunswick says (9/Jul/2003):
When I first bought Final Fantasy I thought it was the best series ever! When I heard Legend of Dragoon was the best game ever I laughed. But I was wrong. It was better than all the Final Fantasy Games put together! The retro music, stunning graphics, amazing storyline, and fabulous additions blew me away. I especially like how every character has their own personality. Dart - brave, Shana - speaks her mind, Rose - the silent type. I can only say one thing about the game. The best RPG game in history!!! Or maybe the best one yet!!!

This game is the SWEETEST28377

Zimo from pawcatuck, CT, USA says (22/Jul/2003):
Now, everyone says this game is sterio typed. big hero in big armor, girlfriend, hidden innate powers, and there's the whole emotion revenge thing. but, it's the plot and creativaty that makes this game happen. all the additions, magic, characters. If i was to recomend and RPG, this should be the first one everyone should get.
it's like an introducion to rpgs. Final fantasy games, crono cross, and some other games are a matter of fact strangley deep and hard to understand. But, with a simple, deep plot like that of Legend of the dragoon, those games will come with simplicity.
That is how i started.

Ive had 4 a few years???? and....29525

A gamer from USA says (8/Aug/2003):
Well i have my reason to love and hate this game. ive had 4 over a year now and still havent beat it. i finally gave up after the dragoon battle /w loyd. I mean the divine dragon is unbalievbly hard as hell. loyd just takes the cake on hardness. And some of the Additions are impossible as hell to preform. ex.. gust of wind dance just pisses me off, demons dance is too fast 4 my eyes, and jesus hex hammer takes the cake, i mean i tried in almost 100 battles and got it maybe 4 times. And you dont get enough exp or gold , and $#< remove me > at ! cost way to much. Now the pro's. The music is awsome, the battle system is sweet, Dragoons and Dragoon magic are ownage, the additions are sweet but some hard, bosses look cool and story line is fun. All out i give it a 9 since basically it was the first rpg i ever played. Imma remake game soon (wish me luck). Although i am a huge fan of the FF games. FF games are to me the funniest and they can go years w/o getting boring. ive beat ff9 like 30 times, yet to beat 8 and 7 cuase i got my ps taken away 4 bout a year. Well goodluck on LOD and dont get pissed and take ur time trying to mastering the hard as hell additions. o and KEEP THOSE SACHETS!!!!!!!!

It is a really fun game...34394

Nevyn Slash from California, United States says (30/Oct/2003):
This is a nice game. It's aimed at people of all ages that are able to stand role-playing games, and it is interesting enough to keep many people occupied. I can't find many things wrong with this game. Other than the Fury of Styx attack having three translations. (spelled two ways, said one way(Flurry of Styx!)) And I don't like the female love attraction in the game. Dart doesn't seem like the person to fall for someone like her. She's annoying and always in the way. But this doesn't affect the game. Other than the kissing scene... *shivers* I really don’t like her.
It has a wonderful plot, the graphics and sound are really good for a PS game and it’s one that can be played over many times. To top it off, it has a very interesting battle system. Sure, mastering the moves can take time, but if you can, you’ll find that it has also improved you hand-eye coordination a little bit.
But the ting I love most about the game is the face that you can see how close to another battle you are by the little triangle over your head. It’s a great feature and it’s to bad that it isn’t in more RG games.
The only thing then that is keeping it from a 10 rating is the translation problems as well as some spelling errors in the dialogue. I'm very picky about that sort of thing. This was a good game, but it's like the producers didn't care enough to make sure everything was perfect with it before they distributed it.
However, I definitely recommend this game to all RPG lovers.

Just waiting for The Legend of Dragoon 2!!!!41860

Davor from Mechanicsburg, USA says (18/Jul/2004):
I believe that this was the coolest game ever. The thing i liked most about it is the story line and the battle system. Its true that i do like final fantasy's but they dont compare to this one. First of all i totaly thought that FFVII SUCKED. it was aloot worst then LOD and i really dont get why ppl like FFVII more then LOD. I mean in final fantasys u coulda been watchin TV and fighting a boos cuz all u would do is hit X to attack but the additions in LOD were aloot more interesting as u actually had to pay attention in the game about all the time and also i LOVED the transformations. Dragoons are about the coolest thing to hit the gaming system. Darts Red-Eye Dragoon was the koolest spirit. The only reason i liked it more then the Divine one was cuz of the looks. I tot he looked a little to bigg and also he was supposed to hav 7 wings and he had only 6.
Out off all my characters Dart and Rose were the best. And my third party member was Albert cuz i liked his additions cuz haschels got annoyin after a while and kongol didnt hav many, Meru didnt hav any HP and was too weak and i just couldnt stand merinda. She was too annoying. The only one thing i didnt like about this game was Lloyd. I mean come on he is the coolest character ever and we didnt get to use him. And then he dies to so that was just too gay. So if they do make LOD 2 they should definatelly put Lloyd in it. OR it would be cool if the just made a remake for this one on the PS 2. And if u could get Lloyd either after u beat him or after u beat the game that u get New Game+. So this game is waaaaaaaay better then all the final fantasys and they should hav a second one or a remake.
