One of the best arcade style mech games available for the playstation. | | Finegan from Perth, Australia says (14/Nov/2000): | At first glance, this game could seem slightly over-complex for the fast-paced arcade style shooting and 3-d platforming it delivers. If reviewed only for the mission objectives then Armoured Core would be only a slightly above average third-person perspective shooter. The graphics are sufficient, and the number of mission areas is quite high. Weapon effects are overall impressive, with a few literally astounding. Watching a fully souped up shoulder mounted plasma cannon fill a hallway with bright yellow globules of explosive death is amusing, to say the least.
It is on that point that Armoured Core greatly increases its originality and lastability. As well as the hundreds of parts available in the shops for purchase, several more are hidden about the various levels. Some of the tastier weapons, such as the large rocket, can be found incredibly early in the game. Your mech, or AC as this game likes to call them, can be built to your specifications. Its easy to find yourself trying to scrape a few kilos here and there off your AC so you can fit that new weapon of mass destruction in. You can even buy (or find) different fire control systems, which determine the range, speed and ease of lock-ons.
Astute readers will have noticed a reccuring theme here. Ludicrously devastating weapons unleashed in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Of course, once the admittedly weak plot is over and done with, you can continue to do all the missions you missed, failed or just enjoyed. And of course, look for those stupid AC parts. Oh yeah, the two-player mode supports the link cable, making it an excellent idea to keep that save file on the memory card. You never know when some sucker is going to get on the wrong side of your Moonlight. (Dont know what I'm on about? Buy the game.)
