MORE SHINE THAN SUBSTANCE....... REALLY | | A gamer from VA, USA says (1/Jun/2003): | First off before anyone calls me a CC hater or whatever I just want to say that I didn't buy CC because I thought it would be like CT. I bought it because basically the whole CT staff worked on this sequel. Which left me expecting an original triumph. But sadly its nothing but a big dissapointment. The gameplay is original and good in its own light, as to where all your characters can be custom made. Graphics are great for a Playstation game. From the FMV to the menu screen. I was hung on the graphics for a while but they just don't make a game. Where the game really falters off is the storyline and the characters. The storyline is just everywhere and you won't really care about it at all. The characters are just the same, there's probably only a few people that you will like. The whole game is focused on tidbits,(anyone who played the game has to know what I mean) which IMO is good for depth but the whole game is like this! And the game which spans two discs really is small. How small you ask? Unbelievably small!(sigh) I really don't know what happened to this game. I'll let all you gamers know I'm a fair judge and the way I call it is usually how it is. A decent game which could have been so much better.
| It's another one of square's gems! | | Bo Graham from Pueblo Colorado USA says (14/Sep/2000): | Chrono Cross, It's the sequal to Chrono Trigger. A very well rounded game;The gameplay is excellent from the stand point of the story line ,or when it comes to all of the puzzles you are required to navigate through. It is truly a Squaresoft game, and it flaunts all of the charicteristics that we have all come to know and love from Square! The graphics are done with an outstanding artistic quality that really shows the finer points of the playstations rendering capabilities. All in all I would recomend this game to anyone who likes a challenge, and if you like candy for the eyes: THIS ONES FOR YOU!!
| Square Soft Strikes Again | | Mike Travis from Malibu, CA USA says (18/Oct/2000): | Another smashing release from everybody's favorite RPG company. It seems like our pals at Square Soft have mastered the art of making classic RPG's that never get old. Killer graphics (The cut-scenes will blow you away), excellent play control and a fascinating storyline make this one heck of an addictive game. So much in fact that I've begun to neglect my day-to-day responsibilities! Chrono Cross has got me wishing I lived in another dimension where all I had to do was play video games all day!
| Finally not the Fantasy | | Ben-Jamin from California says (19/Jan/2001): | Ok, Now this game is awsome. I think I gave Legend of the Dragoons to much credit for their game, and I was definitely exaggerating when I said that they had alot of character. This game has over 150 characters!!! I think the only reason you would complain about this game is because you either don't like RPG's or you don't know how to play. I'm glad they finally got off copying final fantasy, and used a different story line style. Anyways here's what I gave the game from graphics to fun factor
Graphics: Of course a 10
Sound: 9
Gameplay: 10
Lifespan: Well I didn't eat till I was done, 10
Fun Factor: 10

See you later game lovers

| Better than the rest | | bryan from Malaysia says (4/May/2001): | My kid brother borrowed the discs to me. He said he played it for about 3 times. I was quite prejudiced at first. But now, I've played it for....I've lost count. This is simply the best ever game ever developed for PS. Not just among RPG games, but among all. Graphics are excellent, sounds & musics are sweet to the ears (unlike others which are so irritating), and the best of all, it's gameplay.
For once, developers haven't sacrificed any of the other aspects of the game to make the other stand out. I love the fact that every decision that we make would affect the following event. Almost like real life. Characters development are cleverly implemented to avoid the oh-so-irritating random encounters in FF series & its clones. The magic & equipment use are unique & is less complicated than FF.
The FMVs are totally worth the time & attention (not mentioning sleep, work & spouse neglection in my case). The only downside is that the fact the lead character doesn't actually speak. Only nodding & turning his head.
But apart from that, I'd say this game is truly better than FF series. Enough said.
| GET IT NOW!!! | | Stan from Portland, OR says (19/May/2001): | This is ONE of the great games that you must get, no matter what the price is. I bought this game for $40.00 But when I played it, I couldn't put it down! I have a feeling this game might become a game of the Greatest Hits series soon. This game has the best story. Because it's more than: there is an evil guy trying to destroy the world, but where a guy has to fight for his existence. The FMV videos are action packed (well almost all)
, and if not, they look very, very cool. The battle style is very cool as well. Some of the songs sound like they originated in Arabia or Persia, or somethin'. Besides that, this game is incredibaly awesome! If you still aren't sure, then listen to this: Official PlayStation Magazine named this "The Best Game Of the Year, in 2000! Believe me, OPM doesn't give good reviews to all of there games.
| Chrono Cross Rocks! | | Dani from Portland, OR says (1/Jun/2001): | I love this game! I got it for my birthday, and it's the best game I've played since Chrono Trigger! The graphics are really great, and so is the storyline. I read another review that says the storyline's kind of hard to follow, but really, it's easy! For everything, I'd give it a 10. The 3-d graphics are amazing, and the attack modes... You can choose out of 1 (weak, in the 90 percentile of hitting) 2 (average, a little lower in percentage than 1) or 3, which is the hardest. And after you beat the game, you go on to New Game+, which is where you have the same stats and get to get the other characters that you might've missed. I have codes, so if you want them ask me! But this game is really neat, so get it if you can... You'll be thankful!

| Fantastic | | Coatesy from Carman/M.B/Canada says (23/Jun/2001): | This is one of the greatest games ever produced. I would buy this game for any price. It has the ultimate graphics, the storyline is like a movie. When Kid was run though with her own dagger I was blown away. The way it showed her emotion and it realy let u feel the loss. It is over all the greatest. No sane person could hate it.
| The Best Game Ever | | A gamer from Denver, USA says (29/Aug/2001): | I think this is the best game ever released on ANY consoles. It has amazing graphics, great sound, and the best gameplay ever. I think this game is even better than Chrono Trigger. GET IT!!!!! I don't care what type of game you like. As long as you play games, you will like Chrono Cross.
| The game that has it all! | | Egan Louis from Philippines says (22/Sep/2001): | Okay now, I don't really play too many games so I cannot compare this to others, but I must say that this one is a masterpiece. Plain and simple. "Obra maestra," as others would say. Definitely, it is not just the balanced gameplay that keeps me going on for hours (or days), but the interesting and in-depth storyline. It doesn't only make us players practice good strategy, but makes us think and appreciate who we are and who have we been. It encompasses good ironies, such as the events going on (like battles) on a peaceful background. No details were overlooked, and nothing was exaggerated. Top-notched with fun and mystery, Chrono Cross really stands out among other rpg's. Heck, it is the only game that helps me do my essays in my English class! 10/10, could have been higher if not for the range.
| This game is the best | | Travis Denny from Edmonton AB says (20/Dec/2001): | I think the the sony playstation game Chrono Cross is one of the best that I have ever played. It is even better than Chrono Trogger. This game has it all, from spectacular elements and moves , to awesome weapons and equpment. Even the characters are better than that of Chrono Trigger. I have played and beaten that game more than twenty times and I still haven't found out everything, or have gotte all of the characters and elements. I think that anyone who loves to play RPG's should either rent or buy this game because it will so be worth it.
| The Best Game Ever | | A gamer from Brooklyn, United States, New York says (14/Feb/2002): | This game is the best game ever when I got it I was thrilled. Even though Kid died that made me happier because I hate her, I didnt finish the whole game yet because its so hard there is two disks but theyr'e long.This is the best game I ever had but I would also rate all the final fantasy's 10. This game has the best everything. Ther is so much characters and a lot of secrets to find out.
| A blast through time | | Tyler Parsons from Augusta,GA,USA says (20/Apr/2002): | Remember Chrono Trigger? Ah, yes, good old Super Nintendo. And this is it's sequel, Chrono Cross. Is it better? Yes. Did i lose more nights than with all FF games? Yes. is this the best rpg ever? yes indeed. From it's amazing battle style,world map, character design and the shere number of them(over 30!)not to mention the musical score and story that will keep you up for hours. Superb graphics, Excelent sound and story, Hope they make a remake for PS2, this is truly a ride you will never forget.
| More Final Fantasy Magic, Different Approach | | Chrono Serge from Warner Robins, GA USA says (6/May/2002): | Okay, I know what you’re thinking: “I read your review on Chrono Trigger, so I bought and loved it (if you haven’t, do so immediately). Even though CT was great, I’ve heard bad things about Chrono Cross, like it wasn’t as good. What do I do?” Well, brace yourself, because I think Chrono Cross is as good, if not (slightly) better, than its predecessor. Addictive gameplay? Check. Unforgettable character? Sure. Same Final Fantasy magic? Of course, Chrono Cross has that. So, you ask, why are some people saying it’s not as good?
Well, the main reason for this is that the main characters of CT, Crono, Marle, and Lucca, are nowhere to be found in this sequel. Everyone loved Crono and Company, and now they didn’t return for this adventure. Well, don’t let that get you too downhearted, because in the place of Crono is the loveable Serge, maybe even as cool as Crono. The new characters are just as cool as Trigger’s, and now you can select Status on the menu and see the characters up close! A great feature, if you ask me.
Another complaint for CC is that you are no longer time-traveling. Time-traveling is now replaced by two alternate dimensions. Maybe time-traveling was a little cooler than two alternate dimensions, I’ll admit that, but Squaresoft sure did make it seem interesting.
Other cool things about Chrono Cross are:
> Over 40 playable characters (yes, I said 40);
> The return of techs (although there aren’t as many);
> The ability to allocate magic, referred to as elements;
> And, the sly way it fits into and continues the Chrono series.
And don’t forget good graphics and no terrible load times! But, if you’re not finished with Trigger and are thinking about getting this game, I wouldn’t. Even though Trigger’s load times can get aggravating (and just plain uncalled for) at times, I highly advise you not to play Chrono Cross before playing Chrono Cross. By doing this you would mess the story up and not understand many things, which would take away from the magic. And you know you don’t want THAT to happen.
Games are rated on a 5-point scale. Each point is associated with a separate category, which are: G: graphics; L: load times; R: replay value; P: playability; and G: gameplay. Each category can receive either a full point (1.0), one half of a point (0.5), or no points (0). Get the picture?

| Chrono Cross is cool! | | Bauhaumut Eagle from Wallingford, Connecticut, USA says (15/Jun/2002): | Chrono Cross is a cool game. (But why wouldn't it be with something like Chrono Trigger as it's prequel.) The graphics are de best! As I said in my Chrono Trigger review, De best from the Squaresoft now 1999 Chrono Cross, Chrono Break and Chrono Trigger productions! Anyone know what Chrono Break is going to look like though? Anyway. Anyone who played Chrono Cross should agree with me. There's just tw0 much characters... right? There's 45 different characters. Which is why I rated it a 9. Anything else about the game is fine though. Enjoy both games! SEE YA!
| Da Best RPG Game Made By RPG Gods | | Neo_Squall from Malaysia says (20/Jul/2002): | From it's amazing battle style, world map, character design and the shere number of them not to mention the musical score and story that will keep you up for hours. Superb graphics, excellent sound and story.

I would like to make all the RPG fans in the world have this best game ever , so get it in your nearest store .And
Squaresoft RULEZ!! The RPG Gods
| Square did it again! | | Dabunzaee says (19/Oct/2002): | Another masterpiece RPG by Squaresoft. this is more of another final fantasy than being more orignal but still it is awseome. we get too see some more of squares beutiful graphics and awseome story line. the relation to chrono trigger is very small and it is very easy for an rpg but it is worth the money to buy.
it probally has more characters in it than all of squares rpgs put together and the fmvs are sweet too. i say BUY IT
| Who said rpgs aren't fun | | Adam from Derry, New Hampshire USA says (15/Dec/2002): | Who said rpgs aren't fun. Well I'm gona tell the truth, I didn't, Until I played the best game in th universe, CHRONO CROSS! The lenght of the game made me think I'd never get it done, but it made the storyline like a book, It also made it feel so great when I finished it! The graphics were so good, some of the games today are only a at the most a point over Chrono Cross. The characters were the Bomb! Serge was wicked cool plus over 50 more characters! The monster were also cool. It really surprised me when I got a boat and saw how much bigger the world was than at the beggining of the game. The element use is so sweat! You can't beat not having to fill up on Magic Points like in the new game Kingdom Hearts. All in All you can't beat this game with anything else but another sequal!
| A very big letdown.... | | Scott Smith from England says (23/Dec/2002): | Chrono Cross does not deserve to be associated with the SNES epic Chrono Trigger in any way. When I first heard that the original CT team was working on a new game carrying the Chrono name, I was psyched. A second Chrono game was far overdue. But when I saw the first character designs and sketches my heart sank a little, they just didn’t look “right.” But that didn’t matter, it was still the Chrono team, they had created a masterpiece before, and I was sure they wouldn’t let me down this time, right? Wrong. The visual aspect of CC is nearly the only thing about it that is impressive. From backgrounds to character animation, Square did an excellent job. The world is colorful, the locales varied, the FMV pretty. The sound is almost as equally well done. The music fits the various moods and scenes while you are playing well, but you will forget the songs the minute you switch off your PS console, and probably never feel the need to hear them again. Don’t think for a second you’ll be treated to anything nearly as powerful, emotional or memorable as CT’s tracks. The story and characters are without a doubt this games biggest downfall. You will not care one bit about the story, one bit about any of the characters (good or evil) by the time you reach the end of this game. I know I didn’t. I won’t “ruin” the ending; I will just say this: CC had the worst ending to an RPG I have ever had the misfortune to endure. I hope for your sake you get one of the better ones after investing 35 hours or more of your time (if you choose to even play the game.)
Perhaps the worst thing about this game is that somehow it has the name ‘Chrono’ in its title. Not once did I feel an ounce of the magic that made CT so brilliant. Not in the characters, not in the dialogue, not in the storytelling, not in the music, not anywhere. What is truly disturbing is that a game site which I always go to first for my reviews to here from the fellow gamers, which I trust will always give me an accurate rating gave CC a perfect 10. Did FFVII or Xenogears—both far more deserving of such an honor—receive a perfect 10? No. Instead, this lifeless, forgettable, miserable excuse for a Chrono game did. If you’re a CT fan do yourself a favor, pretend this game never happened.
