a classic psx rpg45542

A gamer from sac, california, usa says (17/Nov/2005):
i know that not many people who have played the original chrono trigger cared much for this game, and i think that is only because of their preoccupation with the first game. chrono cross has a great multifaceted story and the most interesting character relations contrary to what some reviewers have said. the story does meet up with the chrono trigger story and while it is in an unconventional sense it is not as one poster described that you would need to take written notes. this is one of the classic rpgs of the psx and i hold it in reverance with ff7 as my favorite game. i place more emphasis on story than gameplay, but for those who wish to know of gameplay the battle system is unique. if you thoughtfully allocate your weaponry and elements before a battle the battle will be easy and the enemy will not use any attach which you could circumvent the effectiveness of to prevent you from getting too powerful, if on the other hand you don't effectively allocate your resources, the attacks will be relentless. there isn't a traditional level up system, but instead a new level is reached only by beating a boss. the game has a multitude of endings, and so many characters that replaying it with different characters in your party and at different places in the converging points of the story will delight you each time around. many of the characters are in some way significant to each other, and by going between the two worlds you can even create reunions between people believed to be dead and their loved ones, which plays out uniquely in every instance, or introduce a character to his/herself. the graphics are astounding for a psone title and the fmv sequences are some of the best square made on that console. the soundtrack is amongst my favourtes and the synthesizer is of much higher quality than the earlier equare games capturing the unique stylings of the music in comparison to other rpgs. pick up a copy if you haven't already, any rpg fan will be glad to have it in their collection.

Chrono Cross: Possible Usurper to FF7?44496

Nik from Columbia,Missouri,USA says (6/Apr/2005):
This game was extraordinary. For t hose of us who played Chrono Trigger way back when it first came out, you will find many similarities that will end up making you go "Hey...wasn't that...?" In addition, the story line is complex, but open-ended, allowing you to draw your own conclusions about things (Guile's identity, Why the masamune went evil, Etc, etc...)

Gameplay:
The gameplay was fantastic, with only a few points that were irritating (doors not opening save at funny angles, certain things blending into the background so as to actually detract from advancing the storyline...) But other than that it was spectacular. Finding extra characters, sidequests....Guaranteed to keep you entertained for a long...long...long....(Got lost in new game+)

Music:
The music is absolutely gorgeous in this game, and the only song I have ever found to counter Nobuou Utusemi's "One winged Angel"(Safer Sephiroth-Final fantasy 7) is the opening song before the start screen (Scars left by time). The music and FMV cut's went together really well.

Graphics:
Slightly glitchy and some points near the beginning, and once or twice during boss battles, but the FMV's were fantastic. The only graphical problem I had was mentioned above, with camoflauged doors and such.

Element system:
I tended not to like this at points, because it alwasys seemed to me that being able to use a specific element only once per battle hindered being able to fight certain bosses (though most of the bosses were not particularly difficult). However, having it this way incorporated a lot more strategy than basic hack+slash+magic games (what with the summons and field effects and all)

Star system:
Once more, the lack of leveling up irritated me. Basically, you can do the bare bones of the game without taking the time to level up. Example, in FF7 I could never beat the demon wall without at least an hour and a half of extra training. Well, since you ONLY level up after boss fights, almost anyone could beat this game...unless they were utterly retarded and ignored elements almost alltogether.

Overall...this game may be a threat to final fantasy 7's title of "ABSOLUTE GREATEST GAME EVER"...(My opinion on both points)

Another Great Masterpiece From Square44210

Adrienne from Indiana Usa says (23/Feb/2005):
Is it just me or does Square have this incredible ability to make the best games? I have never played a game from Square and been dissappointed (unless you count FFT). After playing this game (and the whole FF series, plus KH) I understand why Square-Enix gets so much praise. And Chrono C. is just another among many that are work of grace and splender. And I'll tell you why I think Chrono C. deserves the title of "Greatest Hits". Let me warn now you that if you havn't played the first one and you skipped it like I did, you are going to be SO confused. It is impossible to understand the whole concept of the storyline unless you've played the first one or you had a friend, who played it, explain it you. So spare yourself the headache and play the first one, trust you'll be thankful you did. But anyway, the storyline in the game is confusing but still very good. And there are several different ending just like in the
first. A neat thing in the game, which kinda follows the line of the Suikoden series, is that you can have almost over 40 or 50 different memebers in your group unlike in the first one where you only had 5 memebers and one additional character. But because of that and here is the only thing that's really annoying about this game, is that it takes forever to find the character you want, equip weapons and armor on them, and change or equip their elements. But I have admit that it's fun to find all the additional characters and be able to have them at your disposel whenever you want use them. Another great thing in this game is the battle system. The battle system in this game has got to be one of my favorites ever!! I can understand though if eveyone had a different opinion because the battle system is not made for the typical or average RPG. In this game, magic is a thing of the past and instead you have to use elements in their place. So that might not appeal to eveyone. The music in the game was great and very catchy. I found myself humming some of the music through the game.:) The characters and their personilities were very detailed. I like that in games. Another great aspect in the game was that it wasn't completely linear, that you had options during the story. For example, before you get into Viper Manor you have to decide how and who you take there. Basically when you play the game over again you won't have to keep going the same way every time you play which I thought was cool. Another reason to play this game is for the sidequests. There were tons of sidequests in this game and some of them were quite challenging. Over all, I thought that the game deserved a ten. To me, I liked both first and second. They were both very VERY good games, so if you were a big fan of the first you'll probably like second. *Sigh* I just hope that Sqaure-Enix will make masterpieces like Chrono Cross!!:)

Good Game....41717

JD from Pittsburgh (area), USA says (10/Jul/2004):
It seems to me that soem ppl are a little too enthusiastic and some are not enthusiastic enough about this game. Chrono Cross is a great game and deserves respect but i think that Chrono Trigger had a much better storyline than Cross and it doesnt even compare to Final Fantasy 7 bt it is one of the best games out there.

Here are some of my views on what was done right and wrong with the game...

Characters-
-Chrono Cross has too many characters to actually have an intimate view on each characters life (aside from the kinda annoying giant talking scenes and flashbacks when the characters join).
-They could have definately had a better game without such characters as Pierre, Guile, or that annoying as hell Sneff who are sadly needed to complete your colection of characters.

Graphics-
-Some of the best graphics ever seen for its time...(Pretty much expected from a company like Square).

Elements-
-Square succeded in making another innovative way to have magic with the elements system but i felt it was lacking the ability to actually learn anything.

Leveling up-
-By far the worst thing about Chrono Cross (what were they thinking!!!) is the system for leveling up. Instead of gaining experience you get stars after each boss battle that increase your maximum capabilities, then after two or three crappy enemy battles you have matched your current max and are now forced to wait until the next boss battle to even gain anything...how lame!
This game ruins the fun of training. ex. Nothing is better than training to lvl 99 on the first disk of FF7 then mutilating every enemy for the rest of the game or getting tons of master materia just because you fell like it.

Replay Value-
-lol Id be lying to you ppl if i said it didnt have a good replay value considering i am replaying it right now...
-Overall its a good game and it would kick the ass of just about all of the garbage that is coming out now. That is why i rate it a 7.

Hope whoever reads this finds it useful :-) Feel free to email.

.....wow O.O41664

game_gurl101 from Katy,USA says (6/Jul/2004):
Chrono Cross is, fo course, the counterpart for the one and only Chrono Trigger. But I havent played far into Chrono Trigger yet, so Im not sure of the relationship. Anyway, Chrono Cross's graphics are awsome. I mean like, Oh my god is that guy freakin real or what!?!? kinda graphics. Okay, maybe not exactly THAT, but, close.

Basically in Chrono Cross you start off as a young boy named Serge. You have a supposed girlfriend and, like any other good girl, she is bossing you around and telling you to go collect her komodo dragon scales! So you trudge off and go collect these scales because you dont want to be beaten up by your girlfriend. She said she would meet you at the beach after you were done, so you head there afterwards and wait for her. Yall have a nice little chat and then suddenly ths huge ass wave starts coming towards you! Next thing you know, your lying on the beach, without your girlfriend. So you head back home alone, but things are geting a little strange. And when you get home, and are about to question your girlfriend, you find out something veeeeeeerrrrrrry intresting. You supposedly died some years ago. (Who could've seen this one comeing? Certainly not Serge.)

The music of this game was just, awsome....well, in my opion it was anyway. Okay, so some of it was a tad bit annoying at times, but some othert themes (like the Marbule theme) waas just plain awsome. I swear, i found myself dancing in my seat one time. >_<''' So embarrising.

Another reaslly cool thing about this game is, like Chrono Trigger, you can get multiple endings. And you can have different characters join you to affect gameplay. And one time, one of your team mates is drasticaly sick, and theres no cure...yet. You have the chance to either help this person, or just leave and countinue.

All in all, Chrono Cross is one of the very best games out there. And I highly suggest that you buy it and play it over and over and over and over and over! It is that good!

Fairly good39414

Arthur from Ontario, Canada says (29/Feb/2004):
Chrono cross is a fairly good game... but in now way does it compare to chrono trigger or ff7!

Fine, the graphics are better. But the rest is worse. The storyline is so twisted it will make an empisode of "Law and Order" look like a straught path with bright arrows pointing out the right way. The number of charactors has to be a joke, since very few of them have any personality at all. As for the combat systom.....good, but a letdown from chrono trigger.

HOWEVER don't get me wrong, its STILL a good game, it just dosn't mesure up to FF7 or CT, thats all.

Chrono Cross is da bomb!!!!!!39383

Amber from USA says (28/Feb/2004):
I love this game!!! it is by far the best game I have ever played!! I think the graphics are awesome and the story line is actually pretty good. The characters were pretty unique my favorite characters were Glenn, Norris, Karsh, and Nikki. Serge had no personality he never talked and let others do the talking for him but i think the rest of the game was great. FF7's gameplay was better but the graphics werent as good as the graphics in Chrono Cross but i would say It is still the best. I think People who say Chrono Cross isn't as good as Chrono Trigger are C-R-A-Z-Y!!!! This game is DA BOMB The originality was ok and the music was good and the Graphics were Great considering that this is a Playstation 1 game you have to admit that. No other game i have played for PS1 have come even close to the graphics or gameplay for Chrono Cross (except for Final Fantasy 8 but the gameplay was not good at all i dont think) By far Chrono Cross is one of the best Squaresoft games ever I give Chrono Cross The best rating because it is simply just an awesome game to play.

To any one who is reading this just for the fun of it, i recommend that you play this game, and if you need any hints feel free to contact me at Reble13< remove me > at hotmail.com.

Great38002

Adoy from Nebraska, USA says (6/Jan/2004):
This game was genius I like the characters mostly even though there we're 38,371,863,463 Some of them being kind of cool. Serge, Lynx, Radius, Karsh, Glenn. Then some we're just weird. Starkey, Pashel, What ever that skeleton clown's name is.

The game play was really nice. I had a lot more thinking to do comparing to a lot of others in the Squaresoft series where you just use really strong attacks then win. This you could only use things once you had to build up stuff. I loved this game.(especially when mega starkey ran at you yelling "give meeee star fragment" or pashel said "Where's lina think she thontaneouthly combuthed?".)

The story was confusing and I never really got it. Yet that parts I did get I thought were cool.

PERFECT!!34975

Doug from Norwich, Connecticut says (9/Nov/2003):
Chrono Cross is the best RPG I have ever played. There couldn't be a better sequel to Chrono Trigger. I love the fact that there are so many characters, it gives you a ton of possibly powerful combinations. My favorite character is Glenn, especially after you get both Einlanzers. The only possible thing that I could find wrong with it is that the final boss is too easy.

I do admit this game beats FF933101

Klepto from Sacramento, USA says (7/Oct/2003):
The first time I played this game was right after I played FF7 for the first time, so of course CC came no where close to being as good. I guess I underappreciated it. I just played it again a few weeks ago, and it was much better the second time. For one, you know what the heck is going on. And the fact the Serge never talks doesn't get on your nerves so much. Is it just me, or is Serge the lamest main character ever? I mean, he has no real personality, he wears those stupid poofy socks, and he wanders around with some annoying Australian girl who keeps saying "arse" all the time. I dunno. Just bugs me. It's a pretty good game though, but FF7 & 10 beat the crap out of it.

A disaster for Chrono Trigger: Chrono Cross32660

Greg Hill from Centerville, OH. USA says (29/Sep/2003):
Many people seem to like this game. However, I can't understand why. I've played the first Chrono Trigger game for the SNES and to this day it is my favorite RPG. I too, was highly excited about Chrono Cross, but I ended up being greatly disappointed. It was not at all worthy of the origanal.

Graphics:
For the most part I like the graphics. The Cinema scenes were beautifly done and the character disigns were creative. The special effects of the moves were slightly bland, but all together, visually, it was pretty good.

Gameplay:
It was fairly average to me, although I was disipointed when it almost completely disreguarded the original concepts of Chrono Trigger. Instead of learning new and unique special techiques, you equip a serise of bland looking spells or "Elements" like items and any element can be equiped on anyone after you buy them. As far as double and triple techs go, I've been told they exist in the game, however the only one I've been able to figure out is Glen and Serge's X-strike, even though I've played this game all the way through at least 5 times, it was a let down. I found the new normal attack system interesting at first, but after a while I just stuck to attempting the strongist attack.
Another unique feature of Chrono Trigger they disreguard in Chrono Cross is the Battle Map system. Chrono Cross claimed that they upheld this system before release, but they didn't really. In Chrono Trigger, the character's could see the enemyies on the normal map before attacking them, you could see every enemy you were up against, and you would fight in the normal map. It wasn't like the usual RPG random battles that would have you fight in a in the same background after it does a speical effect. All Chrono Cross did to attempt something similar was have a represtentitive of a monster "group" walk around on the normal map and if you touched it, instead of leaping directly into action like in Chrono Trigger, it goes into the usual "battle mode" with little lights and swirls. Again it was disappointing if you've played the origanal, but if you haven't it probably would bother you because it's the same old way of usually doing battle in RPGs.

Storyline:
Now this will get you fuming mad or confused. If you played the origanal, it will make you both. Chrono Cross was based on the idea of alternate realities, not time, and attempts to try to explain a while bunch of unseen history in two differnet realities. So many names, paces a conterdicting themes are thrown at you at once that your still left thinking "What the heck...?" at the end of the game. I for one still don't know why the main character was thrown into the adventure and what anything had to do with the end bosses and the origanal Chrono Trigger and I've played it many times to try an figure it all out without trying to take written notes. As far as characters go, it's ridiculous. There are some references to the origanal characters, but they don't make sense. You can get 40 people on your team, but they have no personality, much of a story, or an idea of what's going on. Much of the time it's alot like walking past someone on the street if they want to battle monsters with you and save the world. It was corny to put it bluntly.

I know a lot of people think it's great. And I hate to say this, but...I didn't like it as a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Many fans keep up the hipe about it because it's related to Chrono Trigger or has a different concept, but I highly recommend you rent it before purchase.

Colin from Levittown, USA says (4/Sep/2003):
it is a pretty good rpg, but it is no where near as good as the famous Final Fantasy VII(7), 7's graphics may not be as good, so i gotta addmit that Chrono Cross has it in the grapics, but FF7 deffinatly has thee best story line ever in RPG history.

2 tumbs up31384

Lexie106 from Miami, usa says (31/Aug/2003):
I agree, this is 1 of squares best games, but it was not the best. Square has made other games as in Final Fantasy 10 (ffx)! Each character was unique and did have a problem to solve, but the grafics were not the best, and that kissing sequence was soooooooo cheezy! square put some good music in, and i did love the gameplay! Chrono cross is a long game full of many adventures. I belive that Chrono cross is a very original game, not like many other role playing gmes i have seen out there. I think that each character has had a personality that probably took many hours to think up. Chrono cross has sooooooo many characters that in one game you cant even get all of them. I have played and replayed Chrono cross so many times i lost count. Square has contubuted many wonderful role playing games that it is hard 2 choose which role playing game is the best. Out of my favorites like final fantasy ten , chrono cross, chrono trigger and other final fantasy instalments chrono cross is up there pretty high. I belive that chrono cross has been well worth my forty dollars spent on this game! Thank you so much square, Chrono Cross is a wonderful and exciting game!!!!!********
