Awesome... but not best. |

I shall be frank. I adore Final Fantasy VII. I enjoy the plot line, the graphics were excellent for the time, and the characters were very likeable.
Having said that, the gameplay has suffered since Final Fantasy VI.
First of all, I will mention that graphic excellence does not impress me, although Final Fantasy VII does have it in spades. But I hated - I repeat, HATED - the materia system. It had some cool points; linking materia for added effects was cool.
But through the use of materia, the distinctiveness of each character became very limited. Effectively, anyone could do the same things as anyone else, which made the game very boring for me.
I'll give an example: In Final Fantasy VI, there's a level called the Fanatics Tower in which one could only use magic. Therefore, you'd have to be careful which characters you chose to enter it. Your team had to be trained very well in magic spells.
If that same level were in Final Fantasy VII, there would be no strategy needed. Anyone would plausibly be able to equip any magic, leaving any character distinctiveness - in this example, magical ability - in the dust.
*NOTE* After double-checking the review guidelines, I will explain that the reference to Final Fantasy VI was strictly to demonstrate the lack of distinctiveness in character ability in Final Fantasy VII and not as a direct comparison to state inferiority/superiority.
The redeeming factor in this area of gameplay comes from the Limit breaks, this I will admit. A good idea and a well thought-out principle. But that doesn't win back anything substantial for me to counter the game's flaws.
Before critics of this particular criticism come after me with hate mail, I'll ask you: is there any particular REASON, at any point in time, to choose, say, Cait Sith over Barret? Or Yuffie over Red XIII? Given the same materia, in either case, both could have the same abilities besides limit breaks, and it's less of a headache to change materia around. No particular strengths, no particular weaknesses, which is where the gameplay suffers.
I didn't mind the chocobo breeding, though. That was a fun element, as was the racing. But with the exception of collecting materia and finding secrets - and the fact that Vincent is just plain awesome - this game ends up tired and repetitive, and although it certainly captures interest throughout, it's certainly not the best Final Fantasy out there, nor the best RPG.
For the best RPG's, look to the SNES.

Graphics: 10. It was a groundbreaking game graphics-wise, and brought Final Fantasy into the media hype.
Sound: 10. Nobuo Uematsu will always be a musical genius.
Gameplay: 4. For the reasons listed above.
Originality: 7.5. For a game in a long-running series, VII had a high level of ingenuity. As much as I disliked materia, it was certainly very clever.
Storyline: 8. Good, and very deep. Sephiroth as a villain, however, really doesn't impress me that much.
Overall: 7, appropriately enough.

FF7 is an awsome game. If you start playing it you WILL get hooked to it and it will become part of your life, i've already beaten it 4 times and i still havent completed all the side quests yet, its great. I love the look of the world in ff7 kinda dark and destroyed (in most parts) there are some very memorable sites in this game. The storyline is the best out of the series its so detailed and well thought out, and if your gonna play this game please take your time and read all of the sentences and enjoy the story becuase remember the whole point of an rpg is to get lost in a new world. It will leave you on the edge of your seat until the end of the game because of all of the twists and turns. and i think it has one of the best cast of characters i have ever seen, they're all very different from one another which makes them unforgetable. weather you like red xiii(lion) or Vincent they all have unique abilities to help make you'r way through this epic tale. The music for this game is so catchy i find my self humming the tunes at work constantly. The time span for this game is incredible! a standard time it takes to complete this game is at least 35-40 hrs!I don't care what anybody says the graphics are great! ecspecally for the year it was released.yeah thier a little choppy but who cares? you can still make them out. I rate this game a perfect 10!

Imagine living in a world where there is no remorse, and a Huge Corporation is trying to make demise of the planet and you have all of your friends fighting next to your side. Does it get any better than this? Final Fantasy VII was a huge breakthrough for the RPG business, as well as the first game in North America to actually hit it big. Before Final Fantasy VII the life of RPG'S had went down the drain. In 1997 Final Fantasy VII was released and is what started it all for RPG'S. Ok so alot of people say the graphics aren't that good. Well if you actually played the game back in 1997, the graphics were the best thing around. The music was awesome, the gameplay keeps me comming back for more, and the Plot is full of twists and turns; you never know whats going to happen around the next corner. Plus Final Fantasy VII introduces and gives you a full length story behind every character, something that is vastly done with all of the other Final Fantasy Series. If you want to play a classic that will keep you hooked for years to come, and actually touches your emotions, Play Final Fantasy VII i guarantee you will love it, or your money back! This game was great i loved to play it although it leaves you wanting more. This game will always have a place in my heart. I personaly think it should be redone so it looks a little better but i still loved the story. The greatest thing about it in my opinion was the charecters, however i did hate how aeris died that did get on my nerves a little although after her death i used my other people a lot more. Yuffie was a very fun person to get i did enjoy getting her because Yuffie is very entertaining and all the trouble she brings is even more fun! I love that how in the end it shows Red XIII again with kids it was very cute, i do however wish that there was more but just as the saying goes this isn't burger king you can't have it your way. A great game like this needs another game after it WHO IS WITH ME!? Well i guess i can live with the way it ends for now but i will not give up! This game had a very interesting story with it like nothing i had ever heard of before it really gets your attention I MEAN REALLY grabs ya.

When i Wrote my last review of this game, it was july 15 2003 and on this forrum(page 6). I wrote about how this game would be sooo much better if it had waited for better graphics. well... the better grahpics are finally here, only, squaresoft is saying that they will not be doing a remake. This would be sheer foolishness on their part. at the unvealing of the PS3, they used a revamped ff7 opening scene which is still available for download. this action got an unexpected response. fans of ff7 blew up in mass histaria. the response of squaresoft was exactly as i predicted, they say that "there will be no remake." mark my words again, this prediction WILL come true, there WILL be another FF7 game coming at us in the future, and not too far off at that. in the next 2 years...MAX...i think that square is already working on this and that they want to lower the hype so that they can work on it in peace. this isnt an unfounded prediction. look at the success and hype that is following the FF7 advent children movie. i have seen this movie, by the way, and it was GOOD!!!, my point was that there is sooo much demand that it would be foolish not to make the supply to meet it. we are talking BILLIONS. and yet... "square isn't remaking the game." and it was just a coincidence that the game was cosen for the PS3 demo... and that they just "made that scene for the demo." if you beleive that, BOW BEFORE ME AND FOR I AM KING OF THE WORLD!!!

I once played ff7, indeed i did enjoy it but being my first play at a RPG i died a lot and give up. With fantastic reviews to ff8 i played and completed ff8, being over whelmed with enjoyment i took adive from true ff fans and continuted ff7. Graphics are always a problem if u want them to be, however once i was playing ff7 it made no diffrance, the graphics, although outdated was nothing compared to the superior gameplay, excitment, story. The characters are the best i've ever seen, captivating the player into listening to the individial storys. apart from that there is the massive world and a hell of a lot to explore, hidden quests, hidden bosses and more made me play it the second time to complete more, and to this day still playing. The hype for ff7 was well worth it, and even today ask any rpg fan and they will tell you ff7 has touched places where no other rpg can ever go. Not many massive long hour games make u want to play again and again, but in ff7's case, the more you play, the more of the story you will understand, and the more you will complete. This is indeed the greatest game ever overall. People who haven't tried a rpg should try this, this lays the icing on the cake for anyone to enjoy rpgs

Man,as soon as you play this game it is hard to predict and kinda sad.When you get this game or if you already have it you cant stop playing it!!!!!!ITS HIPNOTIZING!!!!!!!!!!! so i just say instead of playing other games get Final Fantasy Vll!!!!!!!!
you will never get bored with it!!! There are 3 discs so the game contiuos on and on and on untill you beat disc three.Thats alot of action and adventure for me,and the graphics are cool on the videos and the map when you leave continets can be a little better but i still give it a 10 out of 10.But besides all of that you need to buy this game,like i said its kinda ssad and kinda hard to predict or tell whats gonna happen.When you fight your use to be companion or team mate 5 years ago named sepheroth it may take a while or if you skilled is still hard but yet easy.I think its hard for me because im fighting strong enemies and all.Im pretty sure you are too,so you should recamend this game 10 out of 10.I have cloud on level 29 right now but im gonna get him on level fifty before i do what i suppose to do.

As RPG player, i like long games with good story line and complex characters and FF 7 is one of the best RPG i played. Of course the graphics aren't good but you have to remember that, when the game was made the conceptors used the best tech they disposed and you can't seriously compare FF7 graphics with new games like FF X, the technology isn't the same. If you play the game till you beat Sephiroth you'll forget about the graphics because the rest of the game aspect(materia system, story line, side quests) make FF 7 one of the best RPG ever made and even now, the newer games can't beat it. The materia system is awesome, specialy if you combine materia like Master Summon materia and HP Absorb or Add Effect materia with Hades materia, or even better if you use Master command materia with Steal as Well materia or HP Absorb.If you judge a game by the graphics it has you miss the essential of what a game is supposed ti do, entertainment. I'll just add this to my comments, if you like good RPG and you don't mind about graphics, FF 7 is a great choice.

I thought there was nothing wrong the graphics Are still good to this day you need to think this was a god sent back in the day I played it all the way to the end i loved the music and the game play was good but the thing that made it the best is the story nothing comes close to it when the story is what you are looking for as for the players you could be cloud was the right man for a hero strong and not careing until the end barrtet well i never liked him myself but he was your mr musel and under all that did care tifa was a strong and careing person red 13 was a wis wolf that gave the opion that every one needed to hear arise was a careing girl vincent was a some what troubeled with his pasted keep to him self and at the end was one with him self cat sith all i can sat one for the kids cid was your mr i care about myself evern no he did not and yuffie was young and all ways went in head frist not stoping to think about what she was going but in the end got it all together and sephiroth was just cool evil and at the same time you could understand him that was what i thought of it any way

final fantasy seven wasn't that great of a game because the storyline was terrible in the game until around the end of the game so you sit there through two discs that are so boring that you can barly stand it and can't stop because you want to see what happens. Then you have the graphics yeah i know it was made in 1997 or somthing but i seen games that were were way better in that time. Did you guys see the monsters in that game they are the worst i mean fighting a machine house that shoots huge bombs from the chimney is pretty gay if you ask me. Ijust don't see how you guys think this was the best final fantasy game ever made if you want to play a good game play final fantasy 10 now that is an great game that doesn't get boring and you don't beat in a day. It has great graphics good storyline and good battle style. the characters features they did a great job on it. the monsters very cool in this game and there not houses that can shoot bombs and sin now that is an awsome monster and the summons to are very cool.

I hav competed the game and the best part is when you finish it and the movie comes on. The graphics are crap and the gold chocobo magically floats, no actually runs on top of the water which makes the game no fun. The chocobo should die after 2 steps or sumpin to make you feel all sad and youll hide in your room and pray to god or something that you can get another. red is a dog that is atleast 200 years old and still does more than that stupid spikey haired jerk that is the main character. cloud has nightmares and doesn't know the difference between memories and something he saw on t.v. the fact that they tried to and i emphisise the word tried to make it 3d i should give them credit for but to me this game was about as good as watching barney. i am not telling you to not play it but there are other things you could do with your time like shoot somthing or taking a baseball bat to your teachers head or car either way i'll be happy. the game was simple and the fact that every step is a battle pissed me of. all in all i think this game was ok but not good enough for me.

First off, I would like to say that this game was a really good one, but it doesn't beat my all time favorite, Final Fantasy VIII. This game had okay graphics for a first time 3-D game of its series. The plot was really good, and the battle sequences/mini movies are awesome! This is what a classic version of Final Fantasy is! It is purely a good game, at least in my opinion. It took me some time to beat this game.... it was worth it. The only dislikes I have are... well I actually have none. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about this game, or Final Fantasy 8 through 10. I will be glad to assist you in any way I can. Have a good gaming experience everyone! I really recommend that you go and buy/rent a copy of this game, and I guarantee that it will be good. The graphics look a bit dated (although the backgrounds are still brilliant) and the battles are too, but this is still the best Fianl fantasy game. You play as an ex-SOLDIER member named Cloud who is working with a group of rebels called AVALANCHE. The storyline and the characters are still some of the best (better than Yuna and Brother for a start.) The game is massive and completely non-linear there are also a few side-quests but not as much as 10, 9 and 8 it took me about 50 hours to complete and it was worth every secon. This game is a must buy and you can probably get it for cheap to so BUY IT!!! The materia system is also a lot better than the newer games (sphere grid, junctioning etc) and there is not as much relying on summoned monsters as there is on FF8. The video sequences are good but they don't really compare to the other games' but the sequence where (arial is it?) gets stabbed sephiroth :'( very emotional. Theres 3 discs and a preview of FF8 (I did a review of that too!) BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!! I personally would give it 10/10 (but i guess you probably knew that already cos it says < remove me > at the top)

People, it's not about the games graphics or things or magic or whatever. The plot is the most important part of what makes a game a good game. I loved FF7 because of the plot and of course the chocobo's!^o^ But it also made me laugh as well cry, my favorite character I will never be able to use because of the villain. But it was because he was manipulated and twisted into thinking he was the heir of the planet. The main herione sacrificed herself for the world and saved mankind! Aeris and Cloud are the true couple of FF7 whether you like it or not. You have to read and pay more attention to the plot and story if you want to know the true couple. I believe in true coupling even if I don't like it.
If you just play the game for fun then your not a real fan. I play because I put all of my thinking and reading skills to the test, it is a strategy game and got me thinking more than school could. Pay more closely to the story and you'll find yourselves in love with the game. If any of you needs a hand with anything on the game then contact me. This game is totally awesome compared to the other Final Fantasy series. I totally believe that this game is out of this world I would reccomend it for starters of the series. Sure some of you are saying that the graphics are bad and the conversation is silent and that's fine because the only thing that is horribly programed is the combat programming. These next five scentences are for people whohave already beaten or are at the end of the game. If you need any information on how to get the (Knight's of the Round Summon)or any of the other materia that requiers a green, blue, black, and gold chocbos email me ok. The only thing that I seriously dislike about the game is the American creatures that's right the Ruby and Emerald weapons they're unstopable has anyone beaten them tell me your secret on beating them please because I have every materia required to do so. Those of you who loved using Aeris because of her limit breaks that help the party will be fun to use in battle becuase I'm going to tell you that she uses a limit break called PLANET PROTECT which in my experience of using it is a boss destoyer because it protects you from anything and I mean anything, but it's just to bad because Aeris is only useable in the first disc which pissed me off when I first played the game because she was my favorite character to use when she got to her third limit break. This game also has some super powerful materia that includes the legendary and almighty KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND which by the way beats the last boss in the game in about 2 casts. I don't if anyone has beaten the game but man is it awesome I am not saying because I want to brag about how I got the almighty summon but that I love the story line and the battles but this game is good to play instead of doing homework and is good for any body. Oh! I almost forgot the only ultimate Limit Break I had ever gotten was Cloud's Omnislash.

This is the best game ever even though I can't get past the Carry Armour on disc 2 but I don't care really.I loved Disc 1 and the beginning of Disc 2.You wouldn't expect half of the things there.I have started about 17 game and I only got on to disc 2 once.I really recommend this game Because There is alot of fun mini games and a great story Plus once you start you can't stop.I have played for about 30 hours.I am like the only Final Fantasy freak in my house.I tarted at FFVll and then moved on to FFX and X-2 and I am trying to get my Hands on FF8.If any one can help me with the carry armour on disc 2 contact me!I have already tried some strategys off the computer.Or you could tell me websites that are good or you could tell me how you did it.I have tried to defeat it alot of times!But I only have my chracters on 49 ( Or somewhere around there)So e-mail me and pass on the word about the worlds greatest game.Ever in the history of the universe.

Final Fantasy VII is the best game ever.The battles are fun.The whole journey is fun it's self. If you've never played it then you betta!! It's awesome all of the little movies to explain things. There's so much to do and explore. You'll have a blast if it's your first time playing it. Don't mind the graphics because the movies make up for it. It can be sad at times but it's a cool game. The battle music is awsome aswell . I think just about all of the music is good. The whole story is cool. You'll fall in love with it. Never underestimate an old school psx game. It's an easy game to figure out...if you havent played it before listen to what everyone has ta say or you'll have problems. It's a very shocking game. Alot of the enemies or bosses can be very intimidating. sometimes it makes ya edgy. It's awsome when you meet new characters and exploraing new areas and the treasures or secrets inside any new place. So be prepared to explore. Personally i think it's the best final fantasy game out. It's just the game oyu'd spend hours and hours figuring new things out. Sometimes you never want to quit. It's an addiction at times . It can be very challenging. Listen to all of the clues given by anyone.
But this game is worth every cent it takes you to own it.Borrow it if you have to!!! Or even rent it! Do whatever it takes!!!

One of the best games, no wait, the best game I've ever played. This game is so fun. Chocobos, gold saucer, monsters, and the most original storyline will keep you playing, well at least it kept me playing. Final fantasy 8 and nine had the card game, but its not as fun as chocobo racing, or riding the roler coster at gold saucer, but that's just my opinion. Everyone complains about the graphics, but hey! it was a 1997 game! But you have to admit, the little squares for hands are pretty funny looking. But the battle sequence graphics are pretty good. I laughed when the flower lady died, f.y.i! lol! This game had a cool storyline. It didn't get dull, it wasn't pointless, and it had an awesome ending! oh and if you just beaten stephiroth keep on watching after the credits, like its not the greatest apple in the pie, but its pretty kewl! Don't forget the hidden characters, I don't really care about yuffie but vincent is kewl! he was a turk yah know lol! I hope you all enjoyed my review! I'll get out of your hair now! :)

just to get one point across to all of you people who "dislike" this game b/c of graphics... its on the original playstation...!!! duh the graphics are gonna be kinda bad! but you cannot argue that this has the best plot and hardest monsters out of all of the final fantasy games! PLOT: ok you are an ex- soldier who joins a group of rebels to try and defeat a group that you were once in!!!! how ironic! MONSTERS: well for one thing the first thing you do when you get off of the train at the begging of the game is what??? BATTLE!!!! you meet up with barret and get into a battle right off! the adrrenaline rushes because you dont know what to do (if you havent played before)... and you choose to attack! 2 hits and the soldier falls! the next soldier attacks you and you counter with a lightning magic spell... how cool!!!! anyway back to monsters being harder... just a comparison!!! final fantasy 8 final boss ultimicia is hard only because she has 4 forms... and thats not even that difficult! the hardest monster in final fantasy 8 is without a doubt omega weapon... which is also easy if you know a good strategy (aura, holy war, limit, eden) very easy and should only take you 25 to 30 minutes!!! after playing the game over and over i have gotten it down to an art of 10 minutes!!! back to final fantasy 7... sephiroth is not too hard but is still harder than ultimicia!!! emerald weapon isnt to difficult but OMG ruby weapon can and will kick a veterans a$#!!! it took me so many tries to defeat him and then finally i came up with a great strategy!!! and it still takes me 20 minutes at a minimum to defeat him!!!!! still longer than omega in 8!!! so i guess all in all you could say that i "dont have any good reasons" or something like that... but think about this...final fantasy 7 the first game on playstation and look what evoled from it (8,9,10,11) so just chew on that for a while!!!!! thank you for your time
oh yeah the movies are so much better in 7!!!! and they are making a sequal and a motion picture!!!

Square have succeded in making a really wicked rpg game here, with the brilliant characters and side-quests, i should be saying how perfect it is. but the graphics, musics and the overall idea of materia really sucks. magic stones that come out of the world, and birth while attatched to your weapons? i think square can do better than that. also,the gameplay really slides downhill after u leave midgar. its more fun working for a rebel group blowin things up than huntin a mental freak down. but overall, good game. sqaure rule, yeh. also, has any1 else completed the game? i wont tell u wat happens in case u ahvent, but u r treated to such a wicked FMV! such a shame all the other scenes of normal play couldn't be like that... but as i need to use up 200 words, i guess im goin 2 go on a bit longer....the gold saucer is da best! wish there were more theme parks like that in the world, cuz id pay all the money in the world 2 get in there 4 one day. so if any1 else has any queries about final fantasy VII, e-mail me at gigagravijation< remove me > at hotail.com!
